That photo makes it look better than it really does. It is huge and hideous, but other than the 500lb weight penalty the engine can now survive a nuclear holocaust, and there is a hinged door to flip out the oil filter

Those side cases look similar to the ones I have on my V-strom. I wonder if I might be able to use the same cases, just with different mounting hardware, when it comes time for a bike upgrade...
