any runners?
I've been dieting and dropping lbs, but haven't done much exercising...
I tried walking/jogging/running, but can't get too far before my knees, ankles, and shins start blowing up... So I bought a bike... I can do way more - burn more calories and get that same high, without destroying my joints... And it's way more fun... So why the fuck would anyone run? |

For fun. People enjoy it, but it is a very high impact exercise.
|
People like it a lot, I do it to keep in shape, but u don't find it enjoyable.
I you'd are having knee or ankle problems, try running on a trail or a dirttrack, much less impact on your legs and ankles, also look at the sites you are using, they mighty have tool much or too little cushion. And I would bet your form sucks, probably slapping your feet on the floor with each step |

Yea fuck running. Not good on the ole knees for fatties like me. I either bike or blade. I choose blading more because its specific hockey training for me. Dont ask me to foot race, but I can out skate people 1/3 of my weight.
The only time I run is in the winter on a treadmill. Much less impact. |

Knee injuries can pretty much fuck up any interest in running. My wife will use the elliptical instead of running because of her knee issues. I really wouldn't advise anyone with a bad knee injury to run without consulting a doc to see how much abuse the knee can really take. You can really fuck yourself up for later in life if you continually abuse joints that can't take it. |
I started running again in January after a 9 year break and I love it. Been training for my first 5k. I have been "barefoot" running though in vibrams and I notice a big difference in form and impact. You really can't pound on the pavement without all that cushioning like you can with big cushy running shoes. So in theory it should help with not getting injured. So far its been working for me. Of course you will find people that think otherwise though.

The barefoot running thing had taken off big time, I want to try it, but the army banned toe shoes. If I could find them without the toes I would

http://www.zappos.com/merrell-barefo...l-glove-amazon I tried on the womens version and they are very similar to the vibrams just without the toes and you have to option of wearing socks. Here are the new balance equivalent. They felt very similar to the merrells when I tried them on. But IMO the Merrells look better. The toe part is weird shaped on the new balance. http://www.zappos.com/new-balance-mt20-grey-red I will prob get a pair of merrells for myself too. |

Running just isn't "fun" to me. I like my mountain bike much more. That said, I need to get back at it. I was getting decent results before I slacked off over the winter. I have friends who prefer the running thing, and sure, you don't need a lot of expensive equipment. Well, I might... but it'd be rehab equipment after I turn a knee or ankle trying to run. |

Cool, I'll look at them next week

I started wearing them because they were the only decent all leather tennis shoe I liked. That was the requirement for nuke for the engineers. Just had to be all leather, didn't have to be a work boot or they had to buy them for us, lol. |
My fat ass ran a half marathon a year ago with a set of Nike running shoes .... the shoes and anti chaffing cream go along way....

They actually made minimalist shoes with the vibram soles specifically for running or running trails. Check out the link I posted. I think they are really nice looking, well some of the colors anyway. |

Gina, I wear socks in my vibrams. When I ran in mine, I had to make sure to run on grass rather than pavement or my shins hated me.

I'd much rather Bike...You can go further quicker and get just as good an exercise. |
People run because they can generally drop weight this way. I do it because I like it and right now am forced to.
I was an idiot last week and registered for a full marathon in September. Guess I'll be running a bit more than usual. |

My little sister runs marathons (42.195 kilometres or 26 miles and 385 yards for you silly Americans). Basicly if your not naturally skinny, with good knees, dont bother trying to run.
And running shoes. You need to spend top dollar on running shoes, and you NEED proper insoles. See a specialty runners shop, and they will fit you properly if you really want to run. Different kinds of feet require different kinds of shoes. And again, if you dont have good knees, dont bother. |
Pffffft. Had an untrained guy on a radio show run a marathon and completed it.

I run. I'm actually starting training for a Marathon in September.
I run because I enjoy it. the days I run... I feel better, the days I don't.... I don't. I like the challenge of it. thinking "I did 10 last time... I think I can do 13" and pushing myself. it's taught me a lot about my body. I don't get the runner's high all the time... but I feel almost zen a peace deep down when I'm running... even in the struggle to keep going... emotionally... I feel a peace. |
