British Columbia police ID biker who posted video of 186-mph ride

CNN) -- Police in British Columbia have filed charges against a motorcyclist who allegedly videotaped himself reaching speeds of at least 186 mph on a busy Canadian highway.
Through tips from the public, the Saanich Police Department, on Vancouver Island, identified the rider as 25-year-old Randy George Scott of Victoria.
Scott is still on the lam, police said, and they still are trying to track him down.
The online video of the harrowing ride has been viewed nearly a million times.
"We have a dedicated group of traffic safety officers and that is a very dramatic example of some obviously dangerous driving," Sgt. Dean Jantzen told CNN.
The video shows a motorcyclist reaching an apparent top speed of 299 kilometers per hour (186 mph) weaving between cars, but authorities think his actual speed may have been even faster.
You can hear him accelerating even when it says 299 kilometers per hour," Jantzen said.

The posted speed limit is 50 mph.

The incident took place on April 6 on a busy stretch of the Trans-Canada highway.

Jantzen said motorcyclists traveling at dangerously excessive speeds are not typical in that part of Saanich, which is more urban.

Saanich police say if convicted on the current charges, he could be sentenced up to five years in jail.

Scott, who police say has had prior run-ins with the law, has been added to Saanich Police Department's "Most Wanted" fugitive list, and police are advising him to turn himself in.

holy death wish

Captain Morgan 07-13-2012 09:05 AM

He's not arrested just yet. They still haven't found him, even though they supposedly know who he is.

Particle Man 07-13-2012 09:55 AM

Jesus - all it would take is one person changing lanes thinking it was all clear and this guy would have been a smear on the freaking pavement... Probably would have taken someone else out with him.

shmike 07-13-2012 10:37 AM

186 my ass.

Homeboy must be running a 50+ tooth rear sprocket.

derf 07-13-2012 10:57 AM

It didn't look that fast to me either, possibly in the 140-150 range

Well just 1 second into the video I already knew it was a 2005/2006 R1. It couldn't have been that hard to figure out who it was if you had access to BMV records, Youtube registration information, and public witnessess....

*ninja edit*

Just saw a local kid on a ZX-6R blowing between cars on the double-yellow on tuesday, wearing nothing but a helmet, shorts, t-shirt and sneakers. Easily going 70 or so in a 35.

Exactly what I was thinking. At 300, the lines on the road should be a blur. Not easily distinguishable.

No, homeboy would be running a smaller rear sprocket for more top end speed.

You're both right, you just misinterpreted shmike's post. If he were running stock gearing (or even worse, a smaller rear sprocket) he wouldn't have that kind of accelleration at 300kmh, and it'd take him miles to get there.

Dude's running a big rear sprocket and everyone is going by speed indicated, which is all but useless. The hash lines and other traffic would be damn near indistinguishable if he were truly running 186mph.

Nice...

Dude deserves jail time, but I admire his bravery

And please tell me how that video (or any "witnesses") was enough to identify who the rider was? Total BS.

RedRider2k2 07-15-2012 11:24 AM

There's been a lot to this story.

They basically knew who did it right from the start (This guy was known, plus public tips) They I.Ded the bike by markings on it in the video. Scratches and such that were visible in the Video and on the bike after they seized it. They couldnt prove who was riding it though and unless he cracks and confesses I don't think they can prove it yet.

The bike is registered (No insurance) in his mother's name. She owns it so she was hit with about $1500 in fines. The officers said they basically planned to tie it up in so much legal BS that he would never get it back.

Still but how can somebody be prosecuted by a video. Think about all the stunting videos that went around. I saw a State LEO up here (MSP) on the news stating they can't prosecute because it wasn't witnessed by an LEO.

Again, they are going to tie it up based on what? It's BS!

Gas Man 07-15-2012 03:58 PM

Oh and that video wasn't that impressive. His speed wasn't that high, I'm thinking 130-140 ish.

sure his lane splitting was dumb but... again. Can't believe they would get anything to stick in court.

Homeslice 07-15-2012 04:28 PM

The only reason they're pursuing this so heavily is because they're pissed that a guy would flaunt it on Youtube. They take it personally --- it's an affront to their manlihood and their "author-i-TAY". And they will harrass and violate his privacy until they get what they want. Meanwhile, all their other investigations will get neglected.

Gas Man 07-15-2012 04:34 PM

Exactly.... I get that but I don't see how any court of common sense won't just laugh at their charges.

Gas Man 07-27-2012 04:58 AM

he turned himself in to the LEO

Probably safer with them than getting his ass beat from the shame.

Smittie61984 08-04-2012 06:56 PM

I think it is an doctored video.

I took a video of me running to an emergency one day with ligts and sirens. I then put the video up saying I was running from the cops. I killed the sound and put music to it and then sped it up about to 1.3-1.5 speed. You can sort of tell the cars are moving faster than you would think but at first glance it doesn't show too much.

He was driving fast as shit but not 180mph worth.
