ZX14 Rumors

Being a fan of big bore GT bikes, I am beginning to hear rumors of a change in in the 20112 ZX14 and it intrigues me . What is being thrown about is a change in Displacement to 1429cc traction control and ABS brakes. This along with a few rumored cosmetic changes are very enticing to me. Anyone with an inside line to Kawasaki?

tached1000rr 08-21-2011 11:23 AM

I've also heard about a makeover and enhancements but no specifics and only hear say

goof2 08-21-2011 02:06 PM

On the ABS front the Concours 14 has it available. I can't imagine putting that system on the ZX-14 would be terribly difficult.

pauldun170 08-21-2011 02:37 PM

It's getting that and a 4k jump in price

The same kind of people who would pay $18k for the new VMax, and apparently someone is because they're still making them. (or were as of model year 2011)

Homeslice 08-21-2011 09:55 PM

From $13,599 to $17,599? I can't see that happening.

Why not? 2011 Zx10 with options runs 15k.

tommymac 08-22-2011 12:02 AM

Hope they do some cosmetic upgrades, think the bike is kinda fuggly

Because ABS, TC, and a mere 6% increase in displacement isn't enough to justify a 29% price increase........especially not in this economy.

That's quite the understatement. It looks morbidly obese.

I see morbidly obeese all the time here at work so sadly I know more than I want to about that LOL

As a guy who owns a Busa and a B King I don't really care about appearance. (although they could loose the Big George Grill on either side. The Projected Jump form 1352 to 1429 is enough to make me curious, that along with the better brakes than the Suzuki line has me wondering.

It has a lot more to do with this economy than it does with improvements to the bike. When the Dollar tanks compared to the Yen and most of Kawasaki's expenses for the bike are in Yen Kawasaki is going to need more Dollars for the bike. Kawasaki now gets less than 80 Yen for every Dollar. Around a year ago they got closer to 90. Three years ago they got in the neighborhood of 110. I'd bet the exchange rate is the primary driver for the price increase.

The upside is that same change should make US manufactured goods cheaper to sell in Japan. Too bad we don't make anything anymore.

I hope they are prepared to sell a lot less, then. The economy isn't going to get any better next year.

My guess is they would rather sell less of them at a profit than more of them at a loss.

No...but a 76 Yen to the dollar is a pretty good reason.

Homeslice 08-26-2011 10:56 AM

Then why haven't 600's dramatically increased? They're still in the high 10K range, which hasn't changed in years.

Hasn't changed in years?

A few years ago, the 600's were in the $9k range.

A few years before that, they were in the $7k range.

goof was talking about the last 3 years during which exchange rates changed dramatically. During those 3 years, I don't recall prices increasing much at all. The economy doesn't allow it. There were some super deals to be had over the last 3 years.

The heydays of the mid-00's are over. I knew a guy who paid almost $13K for his 05 600RR, including taxes & setup. But these days, almost nobody pays MSRP, and if they do, they're flat-out stupid.

Yammer R6 MSRP $9,990.00
Triumph 675 MSRP $9,799.00
Gxsr 600 MSRP $10,399.00
zx6 MSRP $9,799.00

Homeslice 08-26-2011 02:43 PM

so, in 2 years (2009 to 2011), the zx6r has increased by 9%, the r6 by 8%, the 675 by 7%, and the gix600 by 11%

weaksauce, compared to the proposed 29% increase for the zx14

also, who is actually paying those MSRP's anyway?

That for Kwak to raise it 29% would make their MSRP's even more of a joke than they already are.

I really don't mind the lights, but the cheese graters on the sides look too much like a mix between a Suzuki RF900R and a Testarossa.

If they throw those in, I'll be at the Kawi dealer tommorow.

I don't care if the bike is pink with purple polka dot dicks and the exhaust sounds like Rebecca Black's Friday. If that fucker puts out 250hp then I'm game. You won't see it anyways as I come by on the rear wheel at 180mph.

Doesn't look bad, but why do all the Sport tourer bikes go with analog speedo and tach? I really prefer a digital speedo.

I believe in this case it is so you can actually get a sense of the speedo moving. Instead of it being a blur then flashing 299. :lol

idk, I like the digital one on the Buell. Granted, it's all I've ever had, as the SV is also digital.
When I rode the Sprint, I never knew how fast I was going, too hard to find the speed on the dial. Maybe after you get used to it so you know that 55 is at 10 o'clock etc it would be easier...

1) I rarely know how fast I'm going, I go more by feel than anything.
2) Nothing beats watching that dial climb as you pump through the gears.
3) Standing there looking at it - analog looks "faster"... or more high performance to me...

Sport tourers = older customers, and more "traditional"

Also, those bikes are so wide, that they have to fill that space with a wide dashboard with big gauges.

Analog gauges are good for the street IMO. You don't have to look at them directly to know your speed. Digital you have to directly glance at it.

Maybe digital gauges allow for lighter weight (key for sport bikes) while other classes can keep a the ole needle for design aesthetic.

maybe....I'm not an expert on these things you know

I would say only 10-20% of analogs are good-looking, or quickly readable at speed.

With most pre-digital sportbikes, most of their speedos were so small that you had to squint to tell if you were going 72 or 78. The needle blocked half of the space between 70 and 80. That's why I prefer digitals.

I think after a few weeks of ownership, you'll know where the needle is pointing without having to see the actual number.

After owning a 12 and spending some time in the saddle of my friend's beefed up 14, I must say, I would love to have an afternoon with one.
