Even though I'm not a huge fan of the Gap, (too many cops, fucked up traffic, etc...) enough is enough.

Yet another rider was killed recently, by a semi truck that realistically, should have never been on this stretch of road

I had trouble just keeping a big box van in it's own lane on 129, and I can tell you from first hand experience, that it's no fun dodging semi's on the dragon.

For more on the story, and the petition to get semi's off the Gap, go here:

They won't enforce it. Too busy fucking with the 1%ers on bikes.

I will sign anyway.

Please sign this. I had never met Ike but was heading up there with some mutual friends to meet up with him for the weekend. I arrived Friday and he was killed the previous Wednesday. His truck and camper still sat there at the Resort untouched. I just attended his funeral yesterday. This is a VERY sad situation and I am hoping we can get the laws changed to prohibit trucks or at least require a paid escort service. I have spent all of this week crying for a man I never met but feel like I knew....be cause we are both riders. Please sign!

Trucks are already prohibited on the NC side, they are breaking the law as soon as they cross into NC. What we need is signs up there showing that they are prohibited on the NC side.

They also need to add signage on the highways that get them there. Signs that tell them the route is for non-commercial.

And it wouldn't let me sign either.

Trip 08-11-2011 09:19 PM

There will still be trucks, because some will do it illegally to try and skip the weigh stations.

HokieDNA01 08-12-2011 02:26 AM

I think the issue is that you have to have IE9 or another browser

Seems that way... I will have to sign when I get home, since work computers use IE.

I don't understand that area....never been there...but....from the outside looking in it seems completely stupid to me that they'll patrol that road intensely...write speeding tickets hand over fist....while not writing driving in the wrong lane tickets....why it isn't just common sense to not allow semi's to drive on that road when it is physically impossible for them to do so in their own lane.

I know what the answer is.....there is money to be made from writing a high volume of expensive speeding tickets...but....doesn't safety get a hearing at some point too?

They write tickets to trucks sometimes too. Sometimes they just escort them through. Tenn cops are pretty good about truckers when they actually see them.

Tenn cops aren't writing speeding tickets hand over fist either. They have been real decent about how they patrol the area.

Some times I just think it's almost all about revenue generation and the excuse that's given is that it's for safety.

Example - 35 mph 4 lane road with a turning lane in the middle where it was previously 45 when it was only a 2 lane road. They widened the road out and DROPPED the speed limit. Put these crazy 20 foot billboards showing a cop sitting there with his radar gun out basically saying go 35 or else. They would setup at the end of the road with 15-20 cops and go up and down the road pulling ppl over left and right for doing 40 in a 35. Telling me that's for safety?

They've relaxed it now I guess because enough people have complained, but they still sit up and down the road.. it's a straight shot for about 5 miles with way too many traffic lights. On any typical day I see 5-10 cops on my hour commute (each way) to work.

Yesterday I saw 2 cops sitting in a parking lot then down the road 5 more cops had ppl pulled over all in a line. I usually average 50 down the road because anything else is just too fuckin slow.

HokieDNA01 08-12-2011 10:05 AM

rumor has it...a guy won a lawsuit over a ticket at the dragon because they have the road posted at 30mph but they never legally changed the speed so offically on the books. it is still 55mph

I heard somewhere that IE users are less intelligent. I think that's the real problem with those guys.

Yes, but WHY?

Isn't taking a semi through that road EVERY bit as "reckless", given that it is IMPOSSIBLE for them to do so and remain safely in their own lane, as driving/riding 25+ mph over the speed limit? If not more?

Because once they are on the road, it's pretty much a go to the other side type thing. There's not really any places for the trucks to turn around on the road at all. It's better for the cop to ride out in front of the truck and have people get out of the way.

The cops are there for the speeders, the trucks are a secondary issue.

It absolutely blows my mind that semis drive on 129 through there. I was staying at DGMR up in the woods to where I could kind of see the road through the trees at camp. Late at night I saw a couple of semis going west and I thought for sure they were lost and were going to get trapped. Crazy shit.

This is what it looks like to see your friend almost get killed by a semi

Normally, I"m not for any laws because some clown did something stupid, but watching that video makes it clear that the road is simply too sharp for semi-trailors.
