Who's down for another cross country ride this spring?
:?::tremble::whatwhat:

I am starting to plan a trip from TN to Washington State to visit my sister for the first time in... well forever...

I am planning to take this route there...

dReWpY 11-23-2009 12:57 PM

and this way home

edit: my schools internet sucks and its not letting me upload my planned trip home...

Trip 11-23-2009 01:07 PM

Looks like a nice trip, how many days you planning?

Would consider it, but planning another trip that will consist of off road stuff, sorry.

Cutty72 11-23-2009 01:12 PM

you miss ND in that trip... and I won't be home in the spring.

No Worries 11-23-2009 01:13 PM

You could take I-76 to Denver and still avoid Kansas.

Rider 11-23-2009 01:39 PM

Why go through Portland? You would hit better roads if you go through Yakima and Ellensburg,WA. Nothing is twisty though no matter what route you take trough WA.

G-Rex 11-23-2009 02:28 PM

Now that's what I'm talking about! I will caution you, be prepared to gouge your eyes out until you hit Salt Lake City. It will be boring and flat until you get that far.

Otherwise, I would suggest a detour west out of Salt Lake City to see and ride on the Bonneville Salt Flats. For speed freaks/gearheads, it's a spiritual experience. Just be damn sure you hose your bike down really good at the convenience store just off the highway. The water hose is behind the building, north side. :D

dReWpY 11-23-2009 03:46 PM

All notes considered, if anyone is thinking about making a long distance ride next year, feel free to join in , the route back will drop down ca and through bisbee az to the pig trail ar to say finish at deals gap, all I know is eta in washington is july 19th, home on the 25th of. July

dReWpY 11-23-2009 04:20 PM

this is the way back, of course its up to revisions

i am hoping to get a power outlet put on the front of the buell and have a system for placing the saddlebags from the rc on the buell

Cutty72 11-24-2009 03:19 PM

it has a power point on it, just need to convert the end to a cigarette lighter end, or whatever you need.
it's coiled up in the front fairing somewhere.

Drewpy, obviously you have never been to Wyoming. I-80 is incredibly shitty on a motorcycle. All the 18-wheelers that can't make it over the mountains on I-70, take I-80. So there's tons of 'em. And the wind around Laramie is unbelievable.

I recommend taking I-25 north a ways and then cutting off to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The twisty roads around there are legendary. Then go west over the Big Horn Mountains. You say you like geology? When you come to the Tetons from the east, they look unreal. A giant block-fault, so there are no foothills to spoil the view. Then of course, there's Yellowstone. Then take some backroads across Idaho and you'll see why they call the mountains the Sawtooth's. But you could spend so much time in these places that you would have to tell your sister that you'll see her next year.

t-homo 11-25-2009 12:22 AM

I could meet ya in Columbia, MO for the rest of the trip out and back. I really want to take a trip out west and this covers basically everything there is out that way.

dReWpY 11-25-2009 02:14 AM

is that just your general overall direction or will you be sticking to superslab a lot?

dReWpY 11-27-2009 09:50 PM

Osp u must go

dReWpY 11-27-2009 09:55 PM

So the things are looking like I am heading to wa via the southern route aNd meeting gramps and nighthawk in vancover and riding home through the northern portion if the us, dakotas and utah

Fleck750 11-27-2009 10:06 PM

You're welcome to stay at our house if you still go through Kansas City. Have a spare bed and a garage with tools if you need them.

dReWpY 11-27-2009 11:22 PM

im going to start looking up ways i want to go and what towns to stop in and what roads i want to ride, i know that i am really not going to set up hotels and have to make check points in certain days, just ride till i am tired and then pull over and get a hotel or see if its near someone from a board im on, between here, R1 board and badweb i should have plenty of new faces to meet and ride with

Mr Lefty 11-28-2009 10:24 AM

That rode in CO is in my my future trip... so many good looking rds in CO

if you're going to Portland the way your map is... take the Historic Columbia River Hwy. much more scenic than the interstate. MUCH more twisty too... though depending when you go through there... there might be lots of traffic.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...6&ie=UTF8&z=13

or... Take this route around Mt Hood... GORGEOUS

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...04&ie=UTF8&z=9

also I'd jump over to the coast (you can go through my home town Sherwood) and ride down to cali that way... oregon coast is GORGEOUS... and you'd catch the Redwoods in north cali. (also the roads that jump back from 101 to I5 are fucking AWESOME for riding

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...1,21.51123&z=6

No Worries 11-28-2009 12:45 PM

Getting better. But why would you want to take I-5 from Portland to Bakersfield? Time? If you have some, go south along the coast (Route 1).

Re: the map of Durango to Ouray (Route 550). Million Dollar Highway, everyone takes it. You see the town of Rico, west of Silverton, that's a ghost town. I worked all around that area. Hardly anyone takes the road from Dolores to Telluride (Route 145). It's mostly closed in the winter, but I think it's a great idea to do both roads.

Mr Lefty 11-28-2009 04:35 PM

I've driven from Sacramento to Portland about 30 times on I5... not a fun drive. I mean you have a couple passes that would be fun on the bike... but it'd be more fun to hit the coast by far.

if you go down I-5 stop at crater lake in Oregon... you won't regret it.

dReWpY 11-28-2009 05:36 PM

Trock u interested in making this trip?

Gas Man 11-29-2009 02:12 AM

Whats your time table?

Leave?
Back?

And why wouldn't you take the PCH down thru Cali instead of whatever you are taking?

dReWpY 11-29-2009 02:34 AM

I am planning on the. Pch just didn't map itout yet am think July 7th till the 26

dReWpY 11-29-2009 02:42 AM

t-homo 11-29-2009 04:04 AM

It will depend on money, but most likely.

Cutty72 11-29-2009 05:08 AM

Is that I-29 south from Sioux Falls to KC?

There are better backroads than that. Not saying you'll get super twisties, but better than super slab.

There's no way I could burn that much vacay at once. It would eat 3/4 of all my vacay for the year. And I plan on riding to sturgis this year.

dReWpY 12-02-2009 03:51 PM

gas u need to come along for atleast part of the ride, there will be more breath taking views, curvey ass roads and real riders along this trip then at sturgis....

(not to mention less fagz.... and thats saying alot since Trock might be going)

julie j 12-02-2009 05:24 PM

By going from Las Vegas to Bakersfield you are skirting around Yosemite and missing some incredible sights.

Yeah maybe I will. But taking time off work is the big thing.

dReWpY 12-06-2009 06:42 PM

so the new thing is we are planning an ironbutt ride in the middle of this thing!!

the BMW MOA is having their rally at the same time our trip is going on

2010 BMW MOA International Rally
Redmond, Oregon July 15 – 18, 2010
With a panoramic view of the snow-capped Cascade range, the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center is situated on the outskirts of Redmond, Oregon just off of Hwy 97 and adjacent to the Redmond Municipal Airport. They offer ample parking, easy access and a wide range of indoor and outdoor event areas all set on 132 artfully landscaped acres reflecting the high desert beauty. This is a fantastic site for the 2010 Rally!

with the rally they are having an ironbutt ride from three different locations, on in cheyenne wyoming, one from mesquite, nevada and one from Montana.

the three of us are all starting at each location and planning on meeting up at the rally

we are starting around 8 am july 13th, riding a thousand miles and hopefully meeting some good riders along the way

i am planning on going from mesquite, NV and heading this route

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...titled-1-1.jpg

it will be kinda cool, three generations doing an iron butt ride and meeting at the international BMW rally 2010

There's already an accessory plug wired into the front fairing of the 1125R.

You just need to get the other part of the plug and wire up your accessories.

If you decide to get the grip heaters (highly recommended) it plugs into this accessory outlet and yet allows for another plug into the harness.

That way you can add the grip heaters and a GPS/Radar detector.

t-homo 12-06-2009 09:35 PM

Just dont forgot the directions on how to get out of your neighbor hood. I tend to get lost if I dont print them out.

Gas Man 12-07-2009 01:05 AM

Well Drewpy... as we spoke about me joining in. I'm not sure.

Tell me again what time is grandpa leaving to head west?

Approx time of return?

Need to gauge if I can take vacay time from work. As always...

There is as close as I could get to mapping out the route from my place.

dReWpY 12-07-2009 02:02 PM

The pig trail in ar is one of the best roads I have been on, well worth the triop east to back track

Cutty72 12-07-2009 02:08 PM

Cocksucker. You are going within 15 miles of my place and I won't even be around more than likely...

you'll have to get with comonboys and stop in for a visit.

t-homo 12-07-2009 02:25 PM

it would work out better for me to just come down the pig trail and meet in ozark, ar. or meet at the top of it.

dReWpY 12-07-2009 02:31 PM

I could meet you at the top of it, I was planning on spending a day riding that area

Cutty72 12-07-2009 02:34 PM

Oh, and I-94 sucks... Keep 'er about 88 and go.

How far is it from vegas to california? I figure if I am going to be out that far, I may as well hit cali just in case I don't get another chance for a while.

dReWpY 12-07-2009 04:38 PM

not that far, there is a trip from mesquite that runs through cali to or that is like 30 miles longer so not that much but i was afraid of the heat and traffic would be too brutale for an iron butt ride, plus CO is amazing

t-homo 12-07-2009 04:41 PM

I would rather spend more time in colorado for sure. Might have to make a quick jaunt/pit stop just across the border though.

Depends where in CA. The border is about 30 minutes away and LA, San Diego is about a little over 300 miles. Basically Las Vegas is about 300 miles from all the other major cities.

Wait a second. According to your new, improved, and updated map, you completely avoid Colorado.

dReWpY 12-08-2009 01:01 AM

t-homo 12-08-2009 01:18 AM

what is your projected return time?

dReWpY 12-08-2009 01:21 AM

Mine is sometime before the 26th

dReWpY 12-08-2009 05:48 PM

what kinda of window are you looking at T-rock?

i know that the ironbutt ride starts the 13th and i am planning on being there the night before to get some rest.

as far as hotel/ camping, i plan on camping as much as possible, but i am not planning on camping every night, if its only $5-10 for a hot shower and a warm bed, you better bet im taking the hotel! i plan on pretty much living in my riding gear so frabreeze is mandatory

that brings up a interesting point, what do you guys wear when u do long distance trips like this?

im thinkin of something like underarmour just so there isnt as much skin to gear contact and might help help to keep the funk down.that at its easly packable.

i plan on having the oil fresh at the start of the trip, with a fresh set of pilot roads alot of open road.

I am pondering heading out to deals gap and starting from there, for no other reason then saying, hey i started at deals gap, which most ppl out there would know where it was, lame i know but would make for a great stating picture and begining of the blog write up, which i am going to do because i can take my laptop and droid and get pics up asap

I might have to make the trip back a few days quicker, but overall pretty much the same.

I am all for camping. Just stop at a store on the way to the campsite to grab some food for the night, i would imagine.

How many miles are you planning to average per day, other than the iron butt? Do more miles per day every other day to have long days then a day of relaxation, sight seeing, twistie killin? Under armour will be great because we can hand wash it at night and it will be great by morning.

Same thing on fresh oil and tires. I'll probably get some Pirelli Angel STs or stradas.

You sound like one of them crazy Buell people. :D

dReWpY 12-08-2009 06:36 PM

thats not a bad idea, i am planning on spending a day at the pig trail area, bisbee, CO and vegas

dReWpY 12-08-2009 06:39 PM

any places u have in mind?

t-homo 12-08-2009 07:54 PM

Instead of the pig trail, we should go to Push Mountain in Arkansas. Further west and supposed to be better with less traffic, better roads, etc. Or just make a loop including both. I don't have anything specific in mind for sights, but we have plenty of options in the west and southwest.

my bad:boobs:

Gas Man 12-09-2009 01:45 AM

I fig somin like that....

dReWpY 12-09-2009 03:19 AM

when i talked to you last he had not decided when he was planning on going exactly

Gas Man 12-09-2009 09:30 AM

I may have to just sit aside and wait for details to develop. Then make the call.

dReWpY 12-09-2009 08:45 PM

i am on the phone with him, he is thinking about starting out on the July 10th and return around the 22nd or 24th

Gas Man 12-09-2009 11:22 PM

At this point... there is no way I can burn 2 weeks of vacay to do that.
