Street miles... and street crashes
Okay, so I've posted this on two different forums now & figured I might as well post it here too, since there was an interesting pattern on the first two forums.
Now I know this poll isn't perfect, but it works fine for my "needs" so just roll with it. One forum I posted on, everyone felt the need to tell me it's flawed, wrong, worthless, whatever.... but whatever, even if it is, just roll with it. :boobs: Okay, so here goes... I felt like doin some quick math the other day and came up with my personal approximate total street mileage (50-60k) and devided by the number of street crashes I've had (1)... I'd like to see what others get. Obviously there's not a ton of choices but just round up or down and click the option that most closely reflects the total number of street miles ridden divided by the number of street crashes you've been in. A DROP, for this poll, is not considered a crash. If you've YET to get in a crash on the street, just choose the option that most closely reflects how many street miles you've ridden. This way everyone can still participate and even if you crash TOMORROW *knock on wood* it won't change your response. Now obviously there's THOUSANDS of variables that factor into why people crash on the street, but I don't want to get into that. All I want to know about are street miles and street crashes.... that's all. I'm going for simplicity here and this is a SIMPLE formula to calculate and it's interesting to think about. Now like I said, I found that there was a pattern in the results... I'm posting this here to see if that pattern continues. Lets see what happens :) |
I have over 50,000 street miles and zero street crashes. Something I very rarely talk about.
50k, one crash.
Are you including tipovers in these crashes? lol
around 30k 2 street crashes
Just about 30k miles, and 3 street crashes (not including tip overs and very slow speed drops). But, and there is a big but, all 3 were in the first 10k miles, with the first 2 occurring in the first 5k miles.
Anyway i think that your math theory is flawed and doesnt work. I bet if you look at a majority of the crashes that folks were in being a new and inexperienced rider is one of the top reasons. |

Where's the "I crashed my dick into Tater's whore of a wife 50,000 times" option?
20k and no crashes yet.
About 36k street miles, and *knock on wood* no crashes.
I've got about 45k miles on the street and no crash yet.
30k, 1 crash.
Tried to count up mileage among 7 bikes i think, real close to 70 K highway miles, 2 crashes. One in '96 after about 1100 mi total experience and one Oct 25th this year after another 60 sumthing thousand miles.
prolly 70k+ and 1 crash
26or so thousand. One wreck... My loop. Course that's in road.
Off road its more like 1500 miles 15 wrecks... Seems I can't go more than 100miles with out doing something stupid offroad. Lol |
40K no crashes
Around 20K and no wrecks yet.
50k and zero crashes on the street. If we're talking dirt, that's a different story, but everybody crashes in the dirt.
I have about 40,000 total on 2 bikes. Have crashed twice within the first 10,000miles. Knock on wood I have been crash-free since. I prefer to get all my crashes in offroad...and I do crash a lot in the dirt. A Lot!
In 3 season on the street and about 11K miles, I had 1 minor crash. Low speed(< 35mph) but still totaled the bike(> $9K in damage).
I'm around 50K with one street crash. We got "warm" weather one february and I too out my '77 KZ750 ( 1981? ) and basically washed out the front end in gravel. Sat on the "high side" of the bike into the ditch. Picked it up and went on my way. I did have a few almosts where cages almost got me:gofurslf:
I'm glad we're NOT including dirtbike crashes as I rode from age 18 to into my early 30s and crashed way more than I can count. :willy: Jeff |
I would guess I have about 30-40K miles and two good crashes.
This is pretty interesting...
Okay I admit that this poll isn't perfect, but I used the same criteria for all 3 forums that I posted this on.... and all 3 forums had similar patterns - A bell curve, peaking around the 20k miles/crash option... then another spike in the 50k or more option. Granted the other 2 forums had 60 or more votes and there's only 33 here, but the same general pattern is developing. Keep voting if you haven't already... but I think I might tweak the formula and the choice selection slightly and post another poll on all 3 forums again and see if the results show the same trend again. |
I would guess I had about 40k street miles, when I crashed in 2006. *knock wood* My only crash.
How many street miles do you have under your belt now? Just use your total street milage.
That takes a little bit of the guess work out of it :) |
Over 50K on the street with no crashes - BUT I crash at the track at least once a year, so...
Prolly over 100k miles and -0- crashes.

Yeah... it's on the internet... it has to be true.
70-something thousand and no crashes (knocking on wood and staying off the bike today for sure).

Well over 100k, 2 crashes involving a car, 1 crash just me being a moron and flipping a stoppie at a high rate of speed.
