Cane Corso

Uma and I just put a down payment on first pick of a new Cane Corso. Will be a blue (actually gray), blue eye, male. We saw mom and dad dogs last weekend. Dad was about 155lbs and stands about 6' tall. Can we say BIG dog?!

I even got to use a attack sleeve with him... talk about POWER!! OMG.

Pups to arrive June 2nd. Go home with us at 6 weeks and will already be 25lbs.

Here's dad

http://www.motorcitycanecorso.com/ga...l_DSC05628.jpg

But we aren't going to crop the ears and going for the blue over the black.

Here's a few shots of the last litter

Wifey and I are now getting very excited now that we have a deposit down and contract in. I am told a male at 150# will eat a 50# bag of food about every 2.5 weeks. And of coarse the shit will be insane... I'm thinking I might be able to shit in the back yard and it will blend in! YIKES!!! With these dogs in particular, they actually live 10-12 years.. about the same as your lab or retriever. Very light shedding, no drooling, and very much pack dogs. But as long as we socialize the dog as a puppy he should be fine with strangers as long as he don't pick up on negative vibes by us the owners. The dad dog was crazy on the attack sleeve I was wearing... bruised my arm (and I don't bruise, last time was a high side mc accident).

They are a Italian Mastiff breed. A new breed to AKC. Till just recently (the last few months) they were only papered thru a special Cane Corso association. I will get papers for that. It has great bloodlines by Denis Reed.

Should make a heck of a sight with 130# Uma jogging with this dog once he's all grown up...

Will keep this updated as soon as the pups get here...

OH WOW.... what a spectacular looking dog. Just beautiful..... I'm so glad you're going to leave the ears natural.

Congrats on your (soon to be) new family member!

Beautiful dogs. Congrats

Rider 05-14-2008 09:44 AM

Awesome looking dog.. A little bit big for my tastes, but still a very nice dog. I'm thinking about getting either an English Bull Dog or a Boxer. It's been almost a year since we lost out Yellow Lab....

neebelung 05-14-2008 09:55 AM

Gawd, I keep looking at the pic of the gray one with the blue eyes (the puppy).... what a FACE......

Gas Man 05-14-2008 10:20 AM

Yeah we wanted something big and something different. Something that people just have to ask "what is that?". And as Nee said, the pups are so incrediablely cute.

And the pick of dad does NOT do his size justice. He is the biggest dog I've ever saw. Not just tall like a great dane, but very atheletic and solid.

Originally we were looking at dobermans but found these and Uma did TONS TONS TONS of research on like every dog against these. But once we met a couple they are just awesome. Live longer than others their size and very trainable. All of the ones we met would listen to one word commands. This one guy had one in his SUV and with one word it would bark like he was going to kill you, then one more word... calm.

And yeah Nee, the ears don't look as good cropped. Not like a doberman where they look better cropped. This one with its big cheeks looks better with the ears down. The tail will come docked as well as the dew claw removed.

z06boy 05-14-2008 11:41 AM

Cute pups...monster dogs.

I've raised Pit Bulls and Rottweillers but never been around this breed and have only recently read a little about them. Very interseting. :dthumb:

Heck of a breed and a big responsibility for sure. Post up plenty of pics. :rockout:

NONE_too_SOFT 05-14-2008 11:47 AM

cant wait to move out of this apt so i can get a rottweiler.

not gonna clip the tail.

had one in college and this dog was the funnest thing in the world. she was the biggest sweetheart, wouldnt ever hurt a fly. 150# lap dog.

t-homo 05-14-2008 11:54 AM

What kind of price do those things run? Must be pretty high to need a downpayment.

Gas Man 05-14-2008 11:55 AM

z06... its a newer bread as I said it is just in the past few months that AKC even recognized it. Which in reality is probably better because it really has a lack of problems and a great tempermant.

Some more in depth info on them
http://www.canecorso.org/

And this site below is always great for info on any breed.

Beautiful dog. I've seen other Mastiffs. They make my 10-year-old Akita look small. Mine has to be on a close leash outside as he is very aggressive with other dogs. Also, extremely loyal. Calm as can be unless someone gets too close to me.

marko138 05-14-2008 01:59 PM

Good looking pups...and yeah...the pic makes the dad look not all that big.

Gas Man 05-14-2008 09:52 PM

Yeah not sure Marko... also not sure how hold that dad pic is... here's another of the male dogs...

The wife told me that these dogs just came out of the farms in 1988 as work dogs and won't be recognized by AKC in July 2008. Right now they are in the ICCF (International Cane Corso Federation).

Working on names now...

Impressive dogs...I've owned a couple of dogs over 100 lbs. but nothing like these. Even though I like most all dogs...I especially like breeds that you just don't see very often. I'll be interested to hear your opinions as the pup grows up. :dthumb:

I much rather have the Cane Corso than these but speaking of big dogs...I had a friend with a 225 lb male and a 175 lb female Mastiff. These aren't their dogs but check these out...

Smaller litter this time... only 5 pups. So breeder expects them to grow fast being they won't have to fighter over mom milk. And 2 of them are the blue (actually silver) males. So that is good, we can figure out which one fits us best.

Will have some pics Sat and better pics Tuesday after they get their tails and dew claws done.

'73 H1 Triple 05-31-2008 09:32 PM

Congrats on a real (large) dog Gasman. They seem to run the same price range as our Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.

Here's some advice from a big dog owner. First, keep his food and water bowls at a comfortable height for him. Excessive reach *may* lead to stomach problems.

If you suspect he has stomach problems, feed him live culture yogurt. That straightened out Mochi's problems. He gets 5 tablespoons of yogurt, three times a day. He was literally on the "Activa Challenge" :dthumb:

Another possible problem ( which we had ) was lack of specific breed knowledge at the vets. Be prepared to do a lot of research if his health is anything but perfect.

Since you are not cropping his ears, they MUST be kept clean. We wash Mochi's ears about every week to every other week. When we got him ( at 5 months ), he had an ear mite problem that went undiagnosed for many months. He now hates to have his ears cleaned. Get your puppy used to it so it's not a problem. We also use Revolution for heartworm and a tick collar since it controls ear mites and the other popular one doesn't ( I forget the name)

Since he's going to be as strong as our dog, I would suggest a "gentle leader" . It attaches around the neck and around the snout. The leash attaches under the snout and takes the pull away. Without it, Mochi can pull me around . I'm 6'- and 210 lbs. With it on, my 130 lb wife has full control over the dog. ( she does without it too, but if he wants to see something , he's as strong as an ox. GSMD are also work dogs)

I would suggest giving the dog the best food you can get. Not only is it better for him, it will have less filler and therefore fewer "landmines" in the yard :dthumb:

I've heard both good and bad about corso canes. The only bad is from irresponsible owners who didn't properly train their dogs. Make sure he's brought up with other dogs so his social skills are good.

GSMD were used as war dogs in the middle ages so they can be vicious but can also be a very social dog if raised properly. They are also fairly new to the US. Here's picture of Mochi playing with our friends Boston Terrier. he also has the gentle leader on but it's hard to see.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../DCP_2841A.jpg

Mochi's only about 125 lbs in the picture. he's filled out and goes about 155 lbs now.

Once again, congrats on your puppy
Jeff

marko138 05-31-2008 09:38 PM

Thats a great picture.

Gas Man 06-01-2008 12:59 AM

OK... I have heard of the ear mites thing and will have to say something to the wife about it. We had to clean out our last dogs ears so its no big surprise.

I have also saw things on the little tables for the dogs for their dishes. I bet it would also hep keep the cats out of the dog food.

Our breeder has very specific directions on what to do and not to do with your puppy. Even down to what food, and no long walks or ANY jogging for a year (to help with future hip problems). Around the block is plenty for a pup.

We already been buying things for the dog. The gentle lead or they have some other name for it too... but anyway, that was suggested by th breeder and we already have one that is adjustable. Also, got a kennel wall for the SUV, and have lined up a few smaller kennels for the pup that we are going to borrow from a friend. And will buy a large one for him later when he grows.

Well we have 2 cats, and birds so social skills for the dog are going to top priority. My mother in law around the corner has a 7# Chihuahua and my mom has a 12# shitzu so we will be having play dates with them. Funny thing is the pup at 6 weeks will way 3-4 times the chihuahua. Should be funny to watch for sure! Will also be taking regular runs to pet's stores, vet, and probably the park. Socialize him is the idea both with people and other pets/dogs.

He's everything we knew he would be. Perfect coloring, great temperment, and very playfull. He is typicall puppy where as he falls over, jumps, cries, and bites everything. Oh and the puppy breath... its been a while sense we smelled puppy breath but it comes rushing back to you.

The car ride.... hmmm... what can we say... well it was loud. He was doing fine till we put him in the kennel and closed the door. Then the whining and moaning started. It was sad and funny at the same time.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome009.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome010.jpg

Then the potty training starts. Christine has been taking him out ALOT. Everytime he wakes up from a puppy nap, and every 2 hours.

Of coarse he follows us around like crazy, tripping over himself and us. He chews on anything we'll let him and loves his rope toy the most.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome013.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome015.jpg

Of coarse he has puppy energy but still has that mastiff lazy... you can see it already
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome018.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome019.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome022.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome023.jpg

Later we had to do the crate bedtime. That went over like a fart in church. He was not happy about that. He whined, cried, barked, and yelped. Had to tell him to be quiet and lay down. But he still would persist. I don't think Christine got alot of sleep last night.

We were told by the breeder to limit his exposure to people, dogs, and public places for a while till he can get all his shots. Parvo is really bad right now and has be watched for very carefully. Its highly contagous and can be passed on by even humans. So now we have to figure out how to balance germ-a-phobe vs some normalcy.

And one of his favorite places is under us, when we are on the couch... laying on the floor.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome024.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ingHome025.jpg

Then today he had a vet appt. His new vet is GREAT! And now he already has his first 2 rounds of shots. So he's on his way. Clean bill of health from the Doc.

Further, he's getting better with his crate and seperation crying. Had to put a fleece blanket in the crate sunday night so he would have the warm and softness that he's use to when he was laying with his siblings. Plus put a small mechanical travel clock on the crate at night. He did well with that. Still has to go out every 2 hrs but the crying was the worse part.

of coarse now I'm on the laptop in the living room. And if he's not trying to eat the power cord, he's biting my thigh, or falling asleep on my lap or between my legs. He's been sleeping like crazy today due to his shots the vet gave him.

But anyway... will continue to update ya'll as things go on.

no joke. Cute pup man.

Gas Man 07-15-2008 01:36 PM

Yeah he's cool as all hell. Today he made it all the way up the basement stairs.

neebelung 07-15-2008 02:26 PM

GEESH so cuuuuuuuute! I love how the cats are just sitting there, observing... yeah they'd better enjoy it now, cus he'll be terrorizing them soon enough!!

Gas Man 07-15-2008 02:57 PM

Yeah the cats are doing well with it and so is he with the cats.

He will try to snif the gray cat (Avril) and she just walks away and jumps up on something. He looks up and I can just imagine what he's thinking "That's ok cat, give me a few months and I'll get ya!"

dReWpY 07-15-2008 03:00 PM

i know you have said this, but how big do you think he will get?

BobTheBiker 07-15-2008 03:27 PM

HOLY CRAP! that makes my wolf hybrid thing look tiny. your pup is just so cute, although when he's full grown he'll be just GIGANTIC. still lovable, just lovable and huge.

I'd like to see some poor bastard steal something from you with a dog like THAT around. eat the thief whole probably and ask for more.

Yeah he'll be big love. If the pooch don't scare them away we always have the owner with his glock or shotgun. :dthumb:

the chi 07-16-2008 02:28 AM

absolutely adorable!! His eyes are so incredible.

As for the parvo thing, speaking fom experience...as long as you keep him away from outside puppies until he has a good immune system and everyone who handles him washes first just in case you should be good to go. Think of it like a hospital type thing, wash first or sanitize, THEN puppy priviledges. After he reaches 6 months old he should be safe from the disease but his shots will go a long way towards helping out as well.

Kinda like keeping a real baby.

Parvo is a terrible horrible disease, and believe me, if you have a pup get it, you will never forget the smell alone. Getting rid of the germs is a nightmare in itself, it requires bleaching and sanitizing literally EVERYTHING the pup has touched or come in contact with, up to and including yards, fences, walls, baseboards, etc etc...

cant wait to see this lil guy grow!

The gift of a child's laugh... and a Big Dog keychain.

Gas Man 07-16-2008 02:44 AM

I don't want children or their laugh. I have a big dog key chain. Try again.

once his frontline dries I will setup his pool in the backyard so he's not so hott back there.

Also, tonight we took him over to my mother in laws to visit her Chihuahua. Brinks was great. The other dog, Rico, not so much. And my MIL just kept saying "good Rico" even though he was growling and barking and obviously wasn't being good. She thinks if she says that it will calm the dog and make it go away... but really it is all wrong. I don't care, Brinks behaved PERFECTLY. Didn't give two shits about the little dog. It was funny to see how big he looks to Rico (7lbs). But I forgot my camera. Next time.

Cutty72 07-18-2008 12:06 AM

Cute pup, cats don't seem impressed.

in a few months, pup will eat said cats.
Good pup.

'73 H1 Triple 07-19-2008 11:49 AM

Good looking pup Chris :dthumb: We got Mochi at 5 months old, so we missed the "little" puppy stage.

Pretty cool seeing all the pictures you put up. How long until you post a thread stating " help, my computer crashed from having 25,000 dog pictures on it"

Jeff

Gas Man 07-19-2008 05:41 PM

Yeah the little puppy biting and crate training are the worse part.

We picked up a few biting things the other day at his first trip to the pet store. We took him to petsmart. Put him in the cart and wouldn't let him out, so he didn't pick anything "icky" up. Got him a rubber stick for chewing, and a puppy kong especially for puppy chewing. He likes the stick so much we are holding on to the kong till later. But it comes with little biskets to go inside.

As far as the pics... no biggie... its nothing compared to all my bike pics. Plus it would have to crash my laptop, desktop, and the wife's new work laptop. I think we're good.

Mr Lefty 07-19-2008 09:21 PM

I've got probably 10000 pics... don't keep them on my computer though, once I've uploaded them... I usually keep them for a year... then they go to a couple DVD's.

marko138 07-20-2008 09:15 AM

Good looking pup, man.

Gas Man 07-20-2008 09:52 AM

Thanks guys...

Yesterday we introduced Brinks to the dyson and the roomba. It went ok. He was scared of both, but no big deal for him being a puppy and only 7 weeks old. Here's a few pics of him and the roomba.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime001.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime002.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime003.jpg

Then last night we took him for some more socializing with 3 calm, submissive, and very well behaved dogs. The Dan's are great dog owners, and the Mr is a amatuer trainer. His dogs are very well mannered and great all around dogs. 2 of them are Australian Cattle Dogs (Boozer & Riley) and the other dog (max) I'm not sure what he is. So good socializing for Brinks.

Riley

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime007.jpg

Max
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime014.jpg

Boozer
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime019.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime026.jpg

Brinks at first wasn't sure what to think of all of the action going on.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime024.jpg

He watched Boozer and Dan showing off their skill. Boozer is rediculus at fetch. He will do it forever and is very good at it. The best skill show of skill is him with a stick in the woods. He will search and search and search till he finds the EXACT same stick. But here's some shot of standard fetch.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime028.jpg

Brinks wanted him to share.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime037.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime043.jpg

And he does
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime044.jpg

And some yard shots. Dan's have a great 1 acre fenced in yard so its great for the dogs.

Gas Man 07-20-2008 09:53 AM

Riley really took a liking to Brinks.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...layTime070.jpg

But all the action pooped out Brinks and his puppy power.

the Australian Cattle Dogs are INSANE good at fetch and retrieving. I'm talking the best I have ever saw. And their energy level is un-surpassed.

How is your dog...or more accurately...how do you expect it to be at fetch?

Unless you've got serious yardage (as in acres) and a LOT of time to dedicate to them, Australian Cattle Dogs are a LOOOOOOOOOTTTTTT of work. Amazing dogs, and supremely intelligent, but not for the faint of heart. :panic:

"Brinks wanted him to share" is possibly one of the cutest pics I've ever seen!!

You are SO right! I left my Australian Shepard/Border Collie mix with my ex when I moved here because she lives on a farm. I knew I wouldn't have enough room for GIXXER to be happy here. It's been over 6 months and I still miss him!!! Unfortunately, when my HD crashed it took about 1000 pics of him with it!:cry::cry: Now I back-up to PB and an external HD!

BTW that dog learned to fetch in literally minutes,NO EXAGGERATION PERIOD!!! Smartest dog ever!

I'm sorry. Well with his lazy genes (common to mastiffs) I don't expect him to be all that with fetch and retrieve. He already does a little bit of fetch.

Yeah Dan has about 1 acre of fenced in property and they use up every inch of it. We also take them conoe'ing and boozer will swim 70% of the 2.5 mile way. Its like he has an endless tap of energy.

And personally I think the pic of riley laying next to him with her paw on his is so damn cute.

marko138 07-20-2008 07:47 PM

I went canoeing with my dog in June. The first day (we do all weekend w/ camping) we did about 5 miles. Manny swan atleast 3 of that...possibly 4 miles.

Gas Man 07-20-2008 09:03 PM

Well I'm not sure about the miles... I just know it took us like 4-5 hours...

Cutty72 07-21-2008 10:35 PM

Boozer looks like he could have a touch of blue healer in him...

We had a few different australian shepards back home at the farm.
All of them were self taught on both hearding cattle and playing fetch.
They would never back down from either one!

One dog (max) would even still grab the frisbee out of the air after losing the sight in one eye and hearing in one ear. Spectacular dog, best I ever owned.
IMO the only sight better than watching a good hunting dog work a field is watching a good cattle dog heard cattle without being fed commands constantly.

sorry for the jack... very cute pup Gas, love the baby blues.

Gas Man 07-22-2008 07:55 AM

Its cool Cutty... the jack is good and on topic for this page. They are great dogs. They can even hold treats and toys on their head for mins and mins till their owner says "Get it" then they flop it up and catch it in air. Simply awesome dogs. I don't think Brinks will be that awesome for fetch or tricks which is fine. Not what we want him to be. We just want him to be a good, well mannered, defending dog.

Oh and nice sig quote Cutty!

Sunday evening we took Brinks out for his first walk. Just around the block (2 blocks as there and back). The first block as we walk away from the house I had to pretty much drag him. He was choking and such (no choke chain just a collar) and eventually puked a bit. Still no help. Puked again at the farthest from the house. Was getting worried he wasn't going to co-operate. Then after the 2nd puke he was good. It was like he got himself so nerved up that he gave himself an upset stomach. Then once he got rid of it, he started walking like a champ. He walked right between me and the wife and kept pace. Never tried to lead, had no pull on the leash and the leash was slacked between me and him. Perfect.

Monday evening, he started out a bit the same. But now he would walk fine, get distracted and want to stop either due to distraction or pure lazy. Just pulled him thru it. He made the 2 block lap and did ok. Never tried to lead which is good, cause he knows he's not the pack leader.

Walking is VERY important to a dog. When he walks next to you and not in front of you, he knows you are the leader. Further, the exercise and out of the house movement just has to be done to keep them "right". So just like everything else, we are getting a good headstart. Luckily, the weather has been garbage lately so I haven't miss much riding, but I can already tell the puppy is going to screw with it some.

My best friend had an Australian Cattle Dog that just passed within the last year...great dog !! I've never seen a brown/tan/fawn/red one...or whatever color that one is.

He now has a Bull Mastiff named Ruger...a true gentle giant.

Your pup is cute/cool lookin' as can be.

Gas Man 07-24-2008 10:27 AM

Thanks z06!!

Finally got a break in the weather from rain, storms, or crazy heat. Opened the windows and doors. Brinks that it was pretty cool to have front door access. Got a pic of him sitting with Avril the cat.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay001.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay003.jpg

And of coarse with Puppy Power its all play then crash
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay006.jpg

Then my parents stopped by with their Shitzu, Gizmo...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay008.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay009.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay010.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay012.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay014.jpg

Gizmo wasn't quite sure what to think of Brinks. But Gizmo didn't act badly, and Brinks just wanted to play with, finally, a dog his size.

I thought this pic ended up cute... looks like Super Dog
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay015.jpg

Then the mother in law came over with Little Rico again... this time he wasn't bad. No grawling or barking this time when its not his territory.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay019.jpg

But again, he didn't want to puppy play either... poor Brinks
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay022.jpg

So Brinks played with us and/or by himself with his new ball.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...entPlay024.jpg

Trying to get the socialition down with the puppy. The funny part is even now at only 7 weeks old he out weights these dogs. If anything they need to make peace with him for what lies in his future size. :D

marko138 07-24-2008 02:19 PM

What does he weigh at this point?

Gas Man 07-26-2008 08:30 AM

I don't know what he weights now. My bro came over after not seeing him and was talking about how much bigger he is... that he's stretched out and got taller.

Either his next vet visit will tell us or maybe I can get him on a shipping scale at home... ok... maybe if he's sleeping.

JoJoYZF 07-26-2008 08:38 AM

Since hes still small just weigh yourself and then weigh yourself a second time right after while holding him. Thatll give you a good quick idea as to what hes up to now.
