mileage update thread

Its been awhile since a mileage thread has surfaced, I'm curious what Jared has now, and what Trip has on the BMW, Gasman on the HD, and shit Marko should even have 5 or 10 miles on his since the last thread:lol

My cbr is a tick over 19,000 now, around 19,200.

derf 06-18-2011 09:53 AM

Jared is pushing the 5,000,000,000 mile mark.
Marko is pushing the 5 mile mark

My CBR is at 36k
My KLR is almost at 19k

Particle Man 06-18-2011 11:14 AM

Thought I had more but I'm only at 26 and change :(

tommymac 06-18-2011 01:51 PM

I iwll turn 60k on the priller in a week or 2 and am at a whopping 2k on the buell but am taking it out for a ride tomorrow.

Did you put all 60k on the priller? There's a Tuono local to me I looked at earlier today.

Mikey 06-18-2011 03:12 PM

I'm at something like 8K on the 636. Not bad for a bike that's spent the vast majority of its life in storage.

any trouble other than the electrical/stator/charging issue you had?

not realy, had some EFi issues early on but that was all warantee stuff. Now its just wear and tear sort of things. Just replaced the steering head and front wheel bearings. The suspension can use some sprucing up but is plenty fine for commuting/touring, I just wont push as hard in the twisties with it. The rotax motors pare prety muc bullet proof, its just all the crap bolted onto them

Mr Lefty 06-18-2011 04:19 PM

The DRZ died at 23500 I think... it's going to be reborn in a couple weeks... but won't see touring duty... well maybe the TAT..

Nope, regular maintenance. I'm dreading doing a valve clearance soon

G-Rex 06-18-2011 08:02 PM

Busa - 69,9ish
TLR - 32,300ish
BMW - 31,300ish
KLR - 35,900ish

I'll be tacking on close to 9,000 on the KLR in a month and a half. Poor Busa and TLR have been neglected. LOl

Gas Man 06-18-2011 10:25 PM

I'm not pushing shit. This year will probably suck for miles... I'll probably do half of last year due to work. We'll see. I'm trying not to dwell on it so I don't get pissed. I'm going to be in a much better place by end of summer with the bills. MUCH BETTER. Concentrating on that instead cause it's a happy thought.

caveman 06-19-2011 04:45 AM

Since I got the Ultra April 2010 I have close to 10k on it for me. I hope to have about 15K added on after this summer I got the bike at 14,3ish and she is about to push over the 24K mark soon. Perhaps get her put away this fall with nearly 30K hopefully over.

And? Wait until you see what I have planned for the July 4th weekend. Well, you'll see *after* I get back anyway. ;)

To be fair Cave, a few of the bikes had some mileage on them when I bought them.

The Busa I got brand new, so all 69k is mine. (bought new August 2003)
The TLR had 4k, so 28k+ is mine. (bought in December 2000)
The BMW had 26k on it, so 5k is mine. (bought November 2010)
The KLR had 34k on it, so almost 2k is mine. (bought September 2010)

I can still claim 105k worth of miles though on my own, which is still plenty respectable I think. :)

Yes, I do work. No, I'm not 100. LOL. I work for a great company that puts up with my month long vacation antics, and well, I do ride 1500 miles for lunch on occasion. :lol

dReWpY 06-19-2011 02:29 PM

3,899 and not counting

Captain Morgan 06-19-2011 03:01 PM

I'm at 9303. Considering I was at 8161 on 10/15/10, I'm doing poorly this year. However, that's because my priorities have changed.

My "pleasure mileage" has been VERY low, almost non-existent this year. I've only ridden for field calls at work, as I'm trying to get out of debt as fast as possible. Riding the bike for field calls actually helps with that since I'm getting 50+ mpg and get paid 48 cents per mile while riding the bike. If I drive the car, I get an extra 3 cents per mile, but the car gets half the gas mileage, so the bike is the better option.

If I could find a way to reasonably rig a large pizza carrier on the back of the bike, I'd use it while working my second job. Unfortunately, I sometimes take very large orders and there's no way that would work on the bike. I'd have to pass those large orders off to other drivers, which would be detrimental since the larger orders generally result in larger tips.

So, don't look for me to win any mileage contests this year.

racedoll 06-19-2011 06:29 PM

I'm sitting at 19,551. I hope to get 20,000 before this year is over. Should be able to but with all the rain we've been having (with flooding), it's not been a good year to ride.

Me too! And I'm over due, so it needs to be sooner rather than later.

I'm at 36k for my 30k valve job, I checked them at 22k when I got the bike so I'm betting its cool, just not in a rush to do it. The KLR is over due for it too..

Rangerscott 06-19-2011 08:40 PM

VFR - 50,359
ER-6N - 4,???

Luckily there is hardly ever anyone with a VFR that says their valves where out of specs. I checked 4k ago or so, all within specs. There's guys that have 100k and just checked theirs.

I checked the SV at 16k and they hadn't moved. What a bitch of a job that was. Next one, I'm just bringing it to Oneida Suzuki and paying them to scrape their fucking knuckles.

29,710. This pic was taken when I brought here home so maybe 10 miles or so need to be added. Hell maybe more than that "A" tripometer. I can't remember.

You think your bike is a bitch to work on. :lol I have to take apart half my bike to check my valves. No wonder dealerships rape use with an $800 or more labor charge.

I think 12k. It's too easy to do when I do an oil change, so I do it every oil change. I have adjusted them too, stupid simple. The new overhead cam one is suppose to be 100x harder.

I heard he once wanted fresh crab so he road up to Alaska, then hit the fast button and skimmed his bike on top of the water retrieving crab boat pots full of opilio crab. Then rode back to Texas with them still alive and ate them, whole and alive. Sig, captain of the northwestern wasn't pleased

Incidentally, Peter Egan just happened to write about valve adjustments in this month's CW

Rangerscott 06-23-2011 10:20 PM

Unless your engine has set screws I wouldnt fuck with the valves. Ive hardly seen or heard someone say their shimmed valves were out of specs. Most that do adjust them are the OCD bikers.

derf 06-23-2011 11:20 PM

I expect to have to swap shims on my cbr, it has a very slight tick. Others have told me they don't hear it, but I do.

I have a tick but all my valves are within spec. Do you have a flapper valve on your airbox? They can make a noise flapping open/close.

Besides the case swap after the get off, how often do you do your valves and how often have they been out of spec?

I usually check them every 30k-ish or so, since they rarely ever move. Had a couple exhaust valves out of spec at 100k and that's been the only real adjustment. I need to check them again though... I've been lazy, lol

The 954 didnt even make it to the first adjustment. Which is why it was split in half. Multiple super tight exhaust valves. One was pushed further than it could handle.

Rangerscott 06-24-2011 07:41 PM

Sounds like the factory didn't do a good job setting the valves as I'm gonna guess the 954 uses shims.

RedRider2k2 06-24-2011 11:34 PM

Yep, shim under bucket. I've talked to other 929/954 owners who had to really keep on top of valve adjustments. Not to mention the cylinder scoring/oil consumption problems many of the ones I've seen deal with. I love that model but they seem to carry a lot of baggage.

That's what I was immediately thinking.

R1's were known for running on no oil and F'in cylinders up. But guess what, only when running wheelies for miles. Cause, the oil pick ups, faced forward in the oil pan.

Werent the cbrs better as stunt bikes because of how the oil pickups were situated?

Gas Man 06-25-2011 05:41 AM

I think so. I was just stating another problem of a bike where the bike is blamed for it not "doing something correct" because against popular consensus it wasn't designed for stunting. Lol

Possibly. The weird thing though? I know of at least one other person with a 954 who wheelies the shit out of it and just beats on it in general...Trouble free as far as I know:idk:

I cant remember where the oil pick up was situated when I had mine out:scratch:

Anyway, I'm not saying these bikes ended up in this shape because they were so well taken care of. I always got a vibe from mine that it lead a pretty hard life before I owned it. The Mechanics I've talked to just seem to think they dont stand up to abuse, or even poor maintenance as well as others.

The oil pickup in the sump can be reversed so that it pulls from the rear of the sump where all the oil sits when the bike is on its rear wheel. It also helps because most suntahs overfill their oil by a quart or so to make sure there is enough in the sump.

BMW, I believe, says 12k for checking the valves. I do a check every oil change (6k) while the oil is draining out of the bike because I get bored and opening up the heads is fun and doesn't take very long. I don't adjust them every time. If they are close to spec I will usually just leave them alone.

I picked up my FZ last Labor day weekend with just under 17k on it and it's now at...21,5ish. I haven't really done much riding lately. I was busy with school when the weather was nice and now it's so freakin hot most days, I've only done a couple 100 miles trips the last 2 weeks. After the 7th I probably won't take a pleasure ride for 5 weeks, that's my summer quarter and they're cramming 10 week courses into it. It's gonna be the suck!

Day trip might be pushing it but it's probably doable depending on when we would hit the road.

North eastern PA is easier for me, I can be in the pocono region in just about 2 hrs or less on the bike

I'm talking directly north of my place...about 3 hours up Rt 15. Might as well call it NY state. We'll end up about 10 miles from the PA/Ny border.

It blows... I know...

I figure I'll have half the riding season as last year but should have half the bills by the end. So that's the positive side I'm trying to stay on.

God, I want to take another trip so bad. I am really tempted to blow off work and go to the BMWMOA.

Now you know why I take several smaller trips along with the big trip every year. Once it's in the blood, you can't get it out!

I'll be riding to Sturgis this year. :panic: I'm not going to BMWMOA - they are sending four team rather than five. Not going to lie, I'm not upset.

I'm going for the experience, there is more to this trip than hanging out in SD. I've already been there, I understand.

tommymac 07-01-2011 07:11 PM

tomorrow morning on my way to the WTC I will turn 60k:boobs:

I don't want that experience either. I could of went to Sturgis, not during the biker week thing. I avoided it like the plague. I really really want to go back to Utah and Colorado though. Still trying to convince my wife to go with me, so I can go back. LOL

I just want to go for a ride, even around the block.
Hell, at this point I'd be happy sitting on my bike making vroom vroom noises!

Tripped 20K today, sitting about 20,2XX. Nice little excursion today to WV with some friends. They continued south and we came back north through PA and got soaked! Was a good day with 417 miles clocked. Had it not been for the rain holding us up, we could have went further.

Rangerscott 07-03-2011 11:28 PM

I'd love to add some more miles. Sadly clutching with one figure sucks and my red stallion is in pieces right meow.

Mr Lefty 07-04-2011 09:18 AM

fuck... looks like I'll not be riding again until this time next year at the earliest... probably March 2012...

the motor I had lined up for the DRZ was trash... really don't want to part her out... so unless I can find another $600 motor (one that's not trash) I'm waiting and saving...
