Stands......What and Why?
Looking around on motorcycle superstore, I was thinking about ordering a Vortex rear stand for my bike. Figure it would make servicing a lot easier and I can order the front stand down the road when I decide I need it.
How do I know if this will fit and do I need anything else for this to work? I have seen "spools" advertised before but I never really stopped to identify their purpose. Based of very little information I got the impression that they were used on bike, so that the stands have something from which they can pick up the bike. Is this even close to right or am I up to squidlyness again? As for the stands? Anything else I need to know? Thanks! |
yes that's it... it's what most rear stands "lock" into... I say lock... but really they aren't fully secured... the spool just sits in a u shaped cradle on the stand.
they are VERY nice when working on your bike... and if you store your bike for any period of time... get a front stand too... to keep the tires off the ground and avoid flat spotting them... (seeing as your in GA... you probably ride year around... fuck stick) PIT BULL STANDS FTW! most stands are decent... but Pitbull are widely considered the best. (I don't have pitbulls but will eventually) |
Buy t-rex stands. I got both front with triple tree attachment and rear stand and rear spools shipped for the price of one pitbull stand. High quality, good price. No reason to buy anything for more or less money.
I don't have any good pics right now. You can see them in these two pics: http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...2211Medium.jpg http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...02032Large.jpg |

Thanks for the replies, will I need to order spools for the front as well? Do certain spools go with certain stands or am I likely to be ok? Also, CEO where did you order your stands from? |

There are spools that are only meant as a means to use the stand with, and there are spools that stick out a bit more that are intended to function as sliders a little bit. Your choice. As for fitment, you just need to figure out what thread the holes tapped in your swingarm are, and buy those spools. Quote:

Excellent thanks for the quick reply. I would have noted my edit except I made a 2nd post. This whole anti-postwhore system confused the hell out of me till I figured out my posts were being combined.

It's a fix for VABarber... he can't multiquote from his computer in Iraq so it automatically combines subsequent posts. |
Ahhh, now it makes a bit more sense.
Looks like its gonna be 8mm spools and a front and rear stand for me. Thanks for that link, what a great price too. Ebbs, you looked into these? |
naw not yet... I've got a set of stands at the moment so unless they're free... my money can be better spent elsewhere what with my trip coming up and my limited income
speaking of which CEO you get the sand out and decide to come down yet? |
I have a pit bull rear stand .....as CEO said, good stuff but expensive and you can find much better deals.

I have the t-rex stands too (with triple). They work great, don't seem flimsy, and you can't beat the price.
|
If you want top notch quality that will last a lifetime...buy Pitbull.
That being said...I have a Vortex rear stand. Good quality. Not Pitbull but good. |

Pitbull FTMFW!!!!!
They are made about 70 miles from me. I got a great deal from www.sportbiketrackgear.com http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...0/100_1967.jpg |
I have a Vortex and a Pitbull rearstand. Both are good. To be honest...I actually like the Vortex one better. I paid $100 for the Vortex new and $100 for the Pitbull used. :idk:
I've been thinking of selling one or the other and using the $$ to buy a front stand. |
Thanks for everyone's replies. I think I will probably go with T rex. From the pictures they seem of good quality, and both users on this forum are happy with them.

I have a T-rex set for the SV...
Have to invest in another set for the 1125 now... not sure what i'm going to go with. Gotta check to be sure the swingarm will be solid enough on the 1125, as there are no spools for that. |

hmm, haven't seen 'em yet... i'll go check that out.
|
Found 'em...
http://www.darkhorsemoto.com/ $82 plus shipping for a pair seems kinda steep though... Guess they say, ya gotta pay to play. |

Thanks for the pictures Gas Man! I was wondering how the triple tree mount worked.
Despite the Pit Bull fans, I am going to take the cheaper route for once with the T-rex set. I will be sure to share my opinion on them, but I have confidence in the other forum member's opinions for now. :rockout: |
Damn G-man, I don't know if I've ever seen pics of the 9r. Looked damn nice. You could had it back for less than you spent on mods this winter.
|
he went to the big dog cause he was getting a little insane with the crap he pulled on the 9... and the speeds
though I'm think'n he'd still would have been better off $ wise by stay'n with the 9... even if he got like 10 wreckless driving tickets it'd still be under 50k  |

Run a threaded rod from Lowes thru your axle, use your old spools and a couple nuts. Just take it off when you're not using it. In fact get some wingnuts and it'll be easy. Heck, just run the rod out the ends and forget the spools. That way you can use whatever size rod your axle hole will bear for peace of mind.

how much for the rear? any pics/measurements? |
Thought I would go ahead and conclude this thread.
Went with T-Rex and I couldn't be happier. Much better bang for the buck then the Pit Bull stands which I was able to see in person at a local shop. Certainly not a knock on the quality of Pit Bull, but rather the price! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4.../Random023.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4.../Random024.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4.../Random032.jpg Don't have a much better picture of them but I couldn't be happier with the purchase. Went with what CEO recommended and I got everything plus the required spools for the price of one Pit Bull stand. Tom at T-Rex was also very prompt in answering any of my questions. I will recommend these to anyone that ever asks. :rockwoot: |
Nice!
|
one thing to remember:
NEVER EVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER EVER EVER put your bike on a rear stand in complete pitch black at 11pm at night after getting up at 3am to do a track day on a 95 degree day, getting stuck in traffic for 4 hours on the way home and being so dead tired you are going to fall over anytime soon.. bad things happen.. like bending up your rear stand and dropping your bike breaking the new mirror you just bought.. doh! then you spend the next day sledgehammering the rear stand until it fits the bike again.. |
Looks great Quick !
