Mercedes-Benz Unveils E63 AMG Estate

If they brought these HOT wagons to the state, i'd be so on them...........

Merc = Estate
BMW = Touring
Audi = Avant

and yes there is an M5 Touring

-----------------------------------------------------------

The all-new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has reached showrooms in most parts of the globe, and now we are just a couple of months away from the launch of the ‘Estate’ wagon version. Today, however, at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, Mercedes has unveiled the high-performance E63 AMG Estate.

Mercedes and its AMG engineers have tested prototypes for the E63 Estate extensively--even recruiting former McLaren F1 ace Mika Häkkinen and race driver Klaus Ludwig to finetune it--and the end result is the fastest and most powerful version of the E-Class Estate yet.

Like the E63 Sedan, the new AMG Estate distinguishes itself from the standard E-Class Estate wagons with a newly developed sports suspension system with electronically controlled damping, revised front suspension settings and unique exterior and interior design.

The vehicle also develops 525 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque from its hand-built 6.2-liter V-8 engine and accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 4.6 seconds. It also offers a maximum luggage compartment capacity of 69 cubic-feet and a relatively impressive fuel economy rating of 18.3 mpg.

Sending power rearward is AMG’s new SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. It offers four driving modes: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual), which can be selected using a rotary electronic switch in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Partial suppression of individual cylinders by interrupting ignition and injection during gearshifts under full load lets the transmission change gear even faster than it could otherwise. In M mode, the MCT swaps the gears in just 100 milliseconds.

A more direct steering feel comes courtesy of the all-new speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering. The steering ratio of 14:1 is 22% more direct than in the standard production models, while a more rigid steering column plus the reconfigured characteristic mapping of the speed-sensitive servo assistance ensure better steering precision and improved road contact.

Handling is also improved thanks to the addition of 18-inch light-alloy wheels. Lightweight forged 19 inch AMG light-alloy wheels remain an option. Other highlights of the exterior include wider fenders, unique LED daytime running lights and bi-xenon headlights.

Sadly, the North American launch of the new E-Class Estate will bring only the E350 4matic version next June, and so far no other E-Class wagon variants are planned for American sale.

Way too many buttons on the mercedes dash.....And why would you take the lowest stack of buttons and recess them into the dash? That's counter-ergonomic.

karl_1052 09-16-2009 10:24 AM

it is okay, but why not a C63 wagon? Now that would be awesome.

RACER X 09-16-2009 10:31 AM

too small, this one has a rear facing 3rd row, like out '73 olds custom cruiser did lol

Adeptus_Minor 09-16-2009 10:45 AM

Now that definitely puts the hitch in my giddyup. :dthumb:

I kinda have a thing for fast station wagons and that one totally does it for me.

z06boy 09-16-2009 10:49 AM

I don't really care for wagons BUT if you're gonna drive one and can afford it you might as well get one that can do a sub 12.?? second quarter mile. :idk:

pauldun170 09-16-2009 12:04 PM

Awesome....too bad they'll sell 5 of the Stateside.

They have been bringing the AMG model E class wagons to the states for a long time. They have had both the E55 and previous gen E63 wagons over here. As it turns out very few people are interested in paying $100k for a wagon.

i've seen plenty of E (55&63) sedans but never an wagon platform in the states.

same w/ the wagon above and the BMW m5 wagon mentioned, EUR only.

101lifts2 09-16-2009 03:05 PM

Ehhhh...looks like the same wagons VW, BMW and Audi have been sending here since the 1980s.

The tightest wagon is a 1999 BMW 525i.

The M5 estate was never sold here but the AMGs were. I don't think there were many sold so they aren't on Ebay very often. The most I have ever seen were 2 E55s at once and 2 E63s another time.

Here is an E55 on autotrader in PA.

And here is an E63 in VA.

The AMG models are out there but they are rare.

For Volvo wagons I prefer the V70R. It had 300hp, all wheel drive, and the option of a 6 speed manual.

z06boy 09-18-2009 10:16 AM

I'm not much into stationwagons at all BUT I did have a blast in a Dodge Magnum SRT-8 on a closed course a couple of years ago.

It was only 425 hp so I know this Mercedes will be a beast.

unknownroad 09-18-2009 10:48 AM

That's a lot of money to avoid driving a minivan.

I'd love to pick up an all-black Magnum SRT-8 some day...

Yeah, I wanted one of those.
Sadly, the new ones were beyond my means and all the ones now in my means have more miles than I would like.

The thing about Dodge Magnums and Chargers is, unless you buy the SRT-8, you get mistaken for a rental car.

Intrepid tuner Manhart Racing doesn't just tune BMW's to be faster, it also tunes BMW models that don't necessarily exist. Take, for example, what you see here: a BMW M3 E91 Estate.

BMW never put an M3 Touring into production and by the looks of this final product, maybe they should have. But 'M3' in the eyes of Manhart is an interesting creature. In being a true German tuner, the firm shoehorned in the E60 M5's 5.0L V-10 in place of the high-revving 4.0L V-8 that the M3 usually touts. It's a type of engine transplant Manhart's mechanics have become renowned for in the tuning arena.

On top of that, a significant tweaking was deemed proper, so they installed a full racing exhaust system and ECU controller for a grand total of 542 hp -- or 42 horses more than stock. The coveted 62 mph mark whisks by in a claimed 4.3 secs and its top speed is said to be a mind boggling 201 mph.

Mind you, the M5's seven-speed DCT, as well as its full LSD were also included in the mad scientist conversion in order to attain optimal performance. As icing on the cake, the M3's axles, steering setup, and suspension were all carried over to the E91 Touring chassis.
Like Beverly Hills plastic surgeons, Manhart installed the M3's aerodynamics and fenders for the true M factory look. It sits low, wide, and menacing thanks to an upgraded Bilstein PSS10 coilover suspension matched with 20-in. RAD Monza forged wheels. A set of massive six-pot front, four-pot rear Stoptech brake calipers keep speed in check.

Once inside, front passengers are wrapped in handsome BMW Performance bucket seats, while rear passengers are welcomed by a bench seat donned in Alcantara. Carbon fiber and leather adorn all corners of the "M3's" cabin.

Want one? Well, as you can imagine, scooting your buddies and their luggage to realms usually occupied by exotic cars doesn't come cheap. Try around $177,725 to get one in your garage.

Fuckin' sick!

Old post but just saw it and I agree.

In Hawaii we rented a 300C on one island and a Magnum on another and both were 6 cylinders.

In the SRT-8 version that I drove on the course...totally different animals !! Fun !!

Racer X...now if I was gonna drive a wagon and could afford it...that BMW M car looks killer !!!

The problem with the SRT-8 models is Dodge does not offer the lifetime powertrain warranty on them. With the SRT models it drops to 2 years/24,000 miles I believe.

Apparently I didn't either.:lol

For 2009 cars it actually drops to 3 years /36k miles from limited lifetime for the powertrain warranty.

It also looks like the new owners may not be fans of the practice. If the Dodge website is to be believed they are going to 5 years/60k miles for their powertrain warranty for all models, including SRT-8 versions.
