Stereotyping the Rider Isn’t Going to Get the Job Done

From an article for J&P Cycles

http://www.motorcyclepartsandaccesso...our-Garage.jpg

Quote:

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, and by the same token, you certainly can’t judge a biker by his ride. And since our primary goal here at J&P Cycles is to help ALL our customers, that ability to define what people want and need is a real challenge. It requires a unique skill set.

Fortunately, we’re staffed with experts in everything motorcycle and, considering the mix of customers that rely on us for service and advice, we do a damned good job. And part of the reason for that is we try to avoid stereotyping our customers based on the bikes they ride — not an easy task in this industry. There are tons of labels out there, and if we revert to putting our customers into specific sterotypes, we do a disservice to those customers and our brand.

That being said, I have to admit that on occasion I have been guilty of labeling someone by the bike they ride. This is silly, of course, because I certainly don’t think I fit in any particular mold, so why should you? But the question remains: Why do these thoughts persist?

Many of the stereotypes you hear in the motorcycle community are based upon absolutely nothing, but they still exist. For instance: I’ve heard it said that Harley-Davidson customers are far more mechanically inclined than metric customers, and metric customers don’t work on their own bikes. I’ve heard people say Harley customers don’t own other brands, while metric customers do. I’ve heard all sport bike riders are young and reckless. And Goldwing customers are old and slow. Street bike guys don’t like dirt bikes, and dirt bike guys don’t ride on the street. What about snowmobiles and ATVs? Anyone have one of those?

There are so many stereotypes out there, and to list them all would just be a waste of time. As I said earlier, I don’t fit the mold at all. I’m a dirt bike guy, but I also ride on the street. I have a sport bike, and I’m old in comparison to most. I can be reckless at times, but usually I’m not. I like Goldwings and Harleys, and if I had a ton of cash, I’d own both.

There’s a real simple way to dispel a stereotype, and that’s by adding some knowledge. Understanding the thought process of another human being isn’t a walk in the park, but gaining some insight into what they ride can determine why they ride, and what they need. Here at J&P, we know our customers cover the spectrum. Some of our customers have been riding one brand for 50 years or more, while others have just started riding. Some ride two different bikes, while others ride all kinds of machines. Some people only do one style of riding while others are more adventurous and try out different styles.

So instead of going to some magazine resource or some self-proclaimed expert, we thought it would make sense to ask you — our customers — one simple question to set the record straight and help us better understand their needs. And that question is this: What’s in your garage?
Certainly it's an advert but it makes you think.

What's in your garage?

Do you fit the stereotype?

I know I own all HDs, I fit some of the stereo types but destroy many others.

Particle Man 02-11-2011 08:56 PM

I don't think I fit any of them.

I have ridden everything from two stroke enduros to my current bike. A 50cc Honda scooter , several cruisers- including a V-Max and a Hayabusa. Snomobiles, jetskis, atvs, go carts, you name it. I'm a 45 year old guy, with a crotch rocket and a clean driving record...:idk:

Tell me about it, hadn't recieved a ticket in 10 years for a moving violation, then within 2 months I get 3 speeding tickets. That was just about 2 years ago, I pay point on my liscense this year and I get bellow the points threshold again

I also think that most of the folks that frequent this board are completely the opposite of the steryotype. But If I go out riding, 90% of the folks I meet are the stereotype

goof2 02-11-2011 11:32 PM

If I had the money I'd have all kinds of different bikes. Probably not a Harley though. Those guys are all clowns.

I think I'll keep my riding apparel indoors, where it won't be contaminated with tire and/or gasoline odors.

That guys setup is sweet...Short of setting your shit in a bucket of gas when your not wearing it I really dont think it matters if its hanging in a garage or in a closet in your house...

And I Dunno about you...but My jacket smells like exhaust from my bike/other bikes/cars.

You do realize when you ride a motorcycle, your open to the elements right? Shit i have bug guts all over my jacket at times...Turns on the ladies

z06boy 02-14-2011 10:52 AM

I'm definitely not stereotypical when it comes to bikes or cars. You may see me on a sportbike or a Harley or something else in between. When it comes to cars it could be a pushrod V8 like my Vette or an old muscle car or a 4 cylinder turbo...import or domestic...I have many likes and interest.

That's why I find it so funny when on my R1 and V-Twin guys want to turn their nose up and then I can be on a V-Twin and sportbikes guys turn their nose up. I'm the same mofo regardless motherfvcker !! redflip

Translation of blog post

Dear customers, yall know we been working on yer lifestyle vehicles for over 30 years. We've done our best to make sure you hogs run right and even you queers with yer wanna be, American job killin Japapanese Harley copies have been welcome into our little home for years.

Well..after looking at our numbers and looking over the market we decided that the crotch rocket (them "PING KOW POW CHO WOW FOO" manufacturers) and socialist yuppie fag market (land of the surrender monkeys, tea sippers and those fellas that gave us our awesome pointy helmets) is too hard to ignore.

Therefore, we ask you to spread the word. when you come across a rider of one of those "other bikes", let them know about us.

Right after you inform them that they should have gotten a real motorcycle, let them know of a great place to come do business with.
Us.

We got some new, younger guys here who ride some of them jap bikes. Use em for drag racing and they get some good quarter mile times once you squeeze the 300 tire (which as you know is a hot seller) on a new longer swingarm. Our techs have lets us know oil changes are pretty straighforward on em and with the internet now we can order any of them parts from ronayers or something and toss em on.

In summary...when you bump into another rider on either a queer ship or crotch rocket, say somethin about us and bite your tongue.

Its tough times and we have mouths to feed.

And an Aerostich suit (when he could have bought a Fieldsheer for 1/3 the cost)

Solid-colored helmet too (multi-colored helmets are immature in his opinion)

Dude, you are not riding inches away from cars' exhaust.....Unless you're in rush hour all the time. My jacket smells like sweat more than anything else....

And if you put your jacket in a closet with a new tire or bottles of chemicals in it......Shit will stink like a mofo after a few days. Leather is porous, so it absorbs odors pretty good. Hell I keep a box of Bounce on the floor of my closet, and it keeps my jacket smelling fresh, lol.

Like as if the dude doesn't have room inside his house for his gear. Hell if I pay hundreds of dollars for something, I'm not leaving it somewhere where it's going to be exposed to temperature extremes, high humidity, insects, & dust.

Slice, think of nj, traffic, red lights, congestion, you spend a ton of time sucking in exaust

Lmao, I'm not inches away from cars?

I ride in The City of Philadelphia, and I do it frequently. I smell Exactly like Exhaust/Sweat/Rubber/Fuel...Hell, I have gotten in from a ride and flicked off chunks of rubber.

I dont feel the need to have my Riding gear smelling like roses, I highly doubt anyone gives a fuck what I smell like when I'm riding my motorcycle...You really think someone on a street corner is gonna say "Man that guy smelled Fresh and Clean" when you ride by? No, there not.

Guy probably does have room in his house to put his gear...But he doesnt park his shit in the living room...Keep it where it's convenient, Do you put your toaster in the bathroom? Or your toothbrush in the fridge?

azoomm 02-14-2011 08:10 PM

I keep my track gear in a cabinet in the garage. Well, except helmets.... helmets are on shelves on my living room wall. And, my BMW work gear is in my house. That stuff has to be pretty... YES I do have to smell fresh and clean while working. I clean that gear all the time...

Sixxxxer 02-14-2011 08:12 PM

Waste of time IMO, I dont think Ive ever come across or thought to myself...Man that persons gear Smells, Looks Clean...im usually Oogling over the bike.

Hell I havent washed my bike all but twice since 08...and Once was half assed by two girls in bikini's

Its meant to be ridden.

That might be why I'm paid to ride motorcycles and you're not...

My motors [car/truck/motorcycle] are certainly used. But, they are well taken care of. It doesn't take a lot of time to maintain the appearance of a vehicle while making sure it is in good working order. I use a wipe-down on a bike to bolt check. This is especially important with a litre-twin.

Helmets IMHO are more important that my other gear, as my head is more important than other parts of my body. The 100+ sustained temps here will deteriorate a helmet... I will NOT leave my helmets out in that heat for days on end.

Homeslice 02-14-2011 08:44 PM

Dude, it isn't about making someone ELSE think you smell good...........It's about not having a jacket or helmet that smells like petrochemical vapor from your cars, bikes, and all the chemicals you've got in your garage. Or do you enjoy putting on a helmet that smells like that?

And even if the smell in your garage isn't bad, why leave your gear somewhere where the humidity is much worse than indoors, and the temp fluctuates much more, and spiders & shit might get into it.

If you're lucky enough to have a garage, then you must have a house or condo with a lot more room than a typical apartment..... so why not take advantage of it?

Again, I really don't know why you'd leave shit out in the garage where the humidity is much worse, and the temp fluctuates much more. What is the point? I mean shit, if you're lucky enough to have a garage, you must have a lot of space inside your house to put stuff.

Well for those of us with an attatched garage it doesnt matter as much

derf 02-14-2011 10:09 PM

Even less so if the garage us part of the house's temp controlled areas

And I bet 90% of you don't have climate-controlled garages.

Did i say i didnt maintain my Ride? Washing a bike or not washing a bike doesnt make it run any better or worse. Hell It could be covered in bugs mud and fucking dogshit and as long as its functionally sound...it doesnt matter what it looks like.

I check often and through all the moving functional parts i just dont waste valuable riding time making sure i got all the waterspots off and the fairings waxed and washed.

That might be why your paid to ride tho, and I'm not.

And my helmet is on a shelf sitting right next to me...I'll agree with you on that aspect of it...but the Gloves/Jackets/Boots/Etc...On a shelf in a garage...Aint hurting much.

And Homeslice...why do you think everyone stores there gear next to caustic acid and chemicals? You keep worrying about your smell, Chicks dig that shit

Yeah, Living off 12k a year its tough to afford that luxury :lol

goof2 02-15-2011 10:14 AM

I keep my gear inside. With the humidity here I've seen the foam in a helmet disintegrate. I'd also be concerned about my stuff turning in to a penicillin factory if I didn't use it for a little while. The main reason I do it though is sweat takes forever to dry outside.

z06boy 02-15-2011 11:21 AM

My helmet and gloves are in the garage and the rest of my gear is inside the house.

My attached garage is somewhat 'temperature controlled'...by nature...it's part of my basement so partially under ground...no crawl space and above it is my house and on one side is my house and the doors are insulated.

Has stayed 50 -55 all winter as long as you close the doors once you enter or exit. In the summer it stays about 20 degrees warmer constantly IF you close the doors once you enter or exit.
