Probably because he was arrested afterward and spent the night in jail. Now, its not completely impossible to get the police involved in a joke/stunt....but it is much, much harder.

MTV and TV programing in general have fallen farther and farther into the void of scripted reality television. They are capitalizing on their knowledge that the general public is incredibly gullible and likely to buy anything they see...and also that they can't get enough of celebrity tiffs. They are making millions and millions of dollars off of Eminem vs. Mariah, Kate vs. Octomom, Angelina vs. Aniston and so on.

MTV is a tabloid and the VMA is their once a year change to grab some front page headlines for a few days without paying a cent in advertising. So they pick a popular rapper with a history of incendiary racial type comments and have him steal the mic from an innocent lil' white country singer to promote another black performer.

Dudes and dudettes, its a simpler formula than middle school algebra. They do it every year, the media covers the shit out of it and people eat it up like chicken wings.
