Depends on which DMV person you have.
I had to have a bike inspected by the CHP once and the DMV once. My ZX9r was inspected by the DMV and a bike I bought from Las Vegas had to be done by the CHP. The cop didn't understand why he needed to look it over. Something about the engine and VIN verification.
