Anything that's not a single stack mag will be noticably thicker in the grip, that's what makes the 1911's a good choice.

Best thing to do is hold a bunch in a store, find the 2 or 3 you like best, then check out all the reviews on those guns to help with your choice.

I presonally am a big fan of the .40cal. They are a heavy hitting round with not a lot more kick than a 9mm in a good quality gun. But they are pretty much all double stack mags and will be thicker than a 1911 model.
I also vote for the .40. I realize I'm not one of the gun nuts here but I've always considered the .40 a good compromise between the 9mm and the .45.
