THIS

Got the other side cover off. Went at it while sitting on the seat area and pulling like a mofo...nothing. Made a makeshift breaker bar out of two wrenches and voila, it broke.

Got inside it, and yep, oil seal busted. Also the pin that holds the timing mechanism to the crankshaft was sheared off. Went to the stealership and got the parts ordered.

While waiting on the parts, I started tinkering with the 1979 GS1000 that I picked up. But that will be another thread.
