Oh well, the word refers to black people. You obviously can use it any way you want but that doesn't change the meaning. It's like the bitch thread, sure you can use the word bitch to describe anyone or anything you wish but it doesn't change the root meaning. Besides, I'm just fucking with you. Lots of older white people are bigotted, most of the time for no real reason. Like you said, they've barely even seen a black person, much less have any real reason to hate them. It doesn't stop them though.
