CLEVES, Ohio -- Deputies are searching for a man who abducted a woman from a busy northern Kentucky mall Tuesday in broad daylight.

Hamilton County deputies said Ann Ernst, 74, was abducted about 2:45 p.m. from the Crestview Hills Town Center at gunpoint and forced into her car.

"The victim had gotten in her car. The door was shut. The suspect came up and opened the driver's side door, showed a handgun and a knife and forced her into the passenger seat. He drove off with her and her vehicle," said Capt. Chris Schutte, of Lakeside Park/Crestview Hills police.

Ernst said that she was loading her packages into the car and she didn't notice a man slide up to her car. After she sat down, Ernst said, the man grabbed the door and commanded her to move over.

Investigators said that Ernst was then driven across the river to the Cleves area, taken into some woods near the Great Miami River, tied to a tree and gagged.

"He walked (Ann) through some abandoned areas with discarded machinery and down a steep hill to the Miami River. He selected a tree, cut the sweater up that she'd gotten for Christmas and tied her up with it. He gagged her with part of the sweater and left her there," Tom Ernst, the victim's husband, said.

Ann Ernst said the man made demands for cash during the entire time he was with her.

Police said the victim was able to break free and walked to the Cleves Waterworks, where an off-duty Addyston officer spotted her.

The man fled in the woman's 2001 green Ford Taurus, with her her purse still inside, with the Kentucky license plate 114-DJM.

The man was described as Caucasian, 30 to 40 years old, about 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds, with large eyes and protruding teeth. He was wearing an Army-style jungle hat, green baggy cargo-style pants and white tennis shoes.

Police said that Ann Ernst's cell phone pinged off a tower Wednesday near Liberty and Linn streets, but no suspect has been identified.

Tom Ernst said that he's relieved to have his wife back, but that she was not completely unharmed.

"This has been a violent episode that she's never been exposed to (before), but she's got a good strong family. She's a Christian woman and she's going to make it through," Tom Ernst said.

Tom Ernst said he would like to remind everyone to lock their doors the minute they get in their cars.
