One way bearings in an R1 starter

Does anyone know if there should be thick black gunk in there, or is it the actual motor oil that has heated and formed into this goop?

usually there's some grease in there.

Well it has groves designed to carry motor oil to the bearings, so if there is supposed to be grease in there it would get washed out cus its not a sealed bearing.
