Restraining orders aren't worth the paper they're written on. Chances are good that if you're afraid enough of someone that you need one, they aren't going to let a court order stop them from getting at you. Law enforcement also drags their feet enforcing them. If they want to do you harm, the damage is going to be done before the cops show up.

Get yourself a gun, get trained how to use it, get a license to carry it if your state allows it and protect yourself when it is necessary.

That works when you live in a fictional world of espionage and double agents, but her names not Jason Bourne. It’s Misshell and she’s scared.

Documentation, and a paper trail will protect you IF you have to take action. This would be the first step in that trail, and the first action.

jtemple is right though, it’s typically not worth the paper it’s written on for doing the job…..but it’s a starting point in court for the next few steps (when and if they need to be taken)

I would do it for the paper trail, but like jtemple said, its probably not going to do much for protection.

A restraining order is nothing but a paper trail. That's fine, for what it is. You are kidding yourself if you think it offers you any kind of real protection.

Its my understanding that with the RO the police can remove that person for being anywhere near you. Without that they can't do much unless they are doing something wrong.

IMO your better off with it. Yes some people could be set off by it♠ but if that happens they are close to blowing up anyway so these people are a problem anyway you look at it.

They can, but will they? What I'm telling you is this: If a person means you harm and you have a restraining order against them, what the cops are going to find is your dead carcass and a piece of restraining order paper with a shit stain on it when they get to you.

My mother has had a restraining order against someone, as has my sister. My sister's ex violated the order 16 times before he was arrested. This was because nobody saw him break the order. All they would do is write a report.

If nobody sees the guy violate the order and he's long gone before the cops get there, what's the difference if he decides to do more than just scare you? Guess what? The cops are going to show up too late, again.

If that jackass is scary enough that you want a restraining order, he's scary enough to be worth shooting to save your own hide.

My friend had a restraining order from her ex boyfriend which he violated 7 times. The last one, he broke into her house and shot her while she was sleeping. Hit her in the chest but she survived. He got out several months later (i think it was 18 months) when the charges were dropped from attempted murder to aggravated assault.

The law isnt' effective in protecting women.
