Teens who built Lego space man revel in spotlight after Star story

When Asad Muhammad’s principal phoned him early Wednesday morning and told the Grade 12 student to get to school immediately, Muhammad thought he was in trouble.

Not exactly. The principal wanted Muhammad and his friend, Mathew Ho, to do a press conference — media outlets had been deluging the school, Agincourt Collegiate Institute, with interview requests about the Lego man the teenagers sent to near space. Their incredible feat was first reported in the Star Wednesday morning.

Two weeks ago, Ho and Muhammad, both 17, launched a balloon carrying four cameras and a Lego spaceman to the middle stratosphere.

When they recovered their project in a field a week later, they discovered they had captured photo and video footage from 24 kilometres above Earth. That’s three times the typical cruising altitude of commercial aircraft.

The students said they were surprised by the media attention, but not overwhelmed.

“We enjoy it, because we just want to share what we found,” said Ho, who came to the news conference right after a two-hour math test.

Muhammad’s earth and space science teacher, Steven Tors, said, “I've been teaching for 22 years, and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Ho and Muhammad built the balloon for fun, not for a school project.

“That’s what education is all about,” Tors said. “For kids to become curious and become problem solvers.”

Ho told the crush of cameras that he thinks he did well on the math test, but that the next big project for him and Muhammad will be graduating.
