Truly the best way to greet the Dali Lama

http://www.asylum.com/2009/09/24/mem...he-dalai-lama/

And the Dali lama had some fun with it too, thats the best part

CrazyKell 09-25-2009 11:59 PM

Amber Lamps 09-27-2009 03:41 AM

The Dali Lama came to Grand Rapids and we all went to meet him. I shook his hand and he gave me a bracelet that I wore for years afterward.

JoshuaTree 09-27-2009 05:43 AM

Did someone say llama?

Jet 09-29-2009 10:17 AM

Dali Lama has always been the man. Would love to meet him, would care less about meeting the Queen of England, Bono or the Pope.

RACER X 09-29-2009 10:26 AM

sad

you think if i goto my next interview if i "bump" the interviewer it'll make a good or bad impression?

Yea I have to agree with the nay sayers here. The Dali Lama is the spiritual leader for over a third of the world's population and deserves far more respect than that. I guarantee that if this was the Pope there would not have been any bullshit fist bumps. Shit, I doubt that he would have greeted Jesse Jackson that way.

Speaking of, I need to soften my grip a bit and refrain from the "I own you" left hand on the shoulder hand shake at the conclusion of the interview. I think I'm "over-powering" the interviewers here.:idk:

ok james, argue all you want..........it's truly sad for the mayor cuz he's supposed to be grown and respectable man. and as tig said, the D/L is the pope of his religion.........fact is the mayor didn't treat him as such. becuase it's not in the mayors realm of knowledge..........

so bumping is a "normal" greeting for adults...........lol

btw, april told me about the fist bump over the weekend.......

Avatard 09-29-2009 04:27 PM

Fuck, I got halfway through this thread and most don't get it.

I'll try to explain. Mostly to you Racer X, geez.

The fistbump was used by Obama. The Dali Lama is acknowledging a black president, a black mayor, and a new spirit of human cooperation and integration in America.

This is the subtext of what is happening here.

What's disturbing is that racial harmony [and the celebration thereof] seems to upset you so, Racer X.

Ah I guess you're allowed your opinion. I just don't believe that the Dali Lama "is just another man", any more than President Obama is just another man. If our President went to another country and was disrespected like that, I'd want to declare war. I'm weird like that though...

Just for that, I call on all my Buddhist brothers to spit in the won ton of any black man that enters your restaurants for the next month in protest!

I think white people use the fist pump more then anyone.

For the record, as far as the fist pump goes I only do it if someone puts their hand up.

Some people such as Howie Mandel do it because of a fear of germs.

Yea I don't remember that either... btw last I checked fist bumping is not a "black greeting", the people I see use it most are frat boys. I don't fist bump as a greeting. Besides, this guy is a middle aged MAYOR, not some thug nigga on the block greeting one of his home dogs.

Fuck MTV. Some people don't even shake now because of the swine flu. So for some the handshake is being replaced or just plan dropped.

Once again a lot of people claim that shaking is a bad idea because of things like the swine flu. My mother has been to a lot of seminars where they suggest people don't shake at all.

Dude the Japanese bow greeting is a thousands of years old tradition. Fist bumping is NOT out national greeting ritual. If he suddenly wanted to be a "soul brother" he should have hit him with the "soul brother" handshake with a half hug and clap on the back. That's what me and my bros do.

A "fist bump" is an unprofessional way to greet someone.
His "Hello Dalia" quip was also unprofessional.

This wasn't a casual social event.

I'm not saying it is but bowing isn't a North American tradition. Plus the fist pump isn't a soul brother greating.

Occasionally, you'll get some white guy try it with a black guy.
Not only is it unprofessional, unsightly and awkward, its also a good way for the white guy to get the "closet racist" check mark in the rumor mill file.

Everyone else..firm handshake for the win unless cultural norms are a factor (FORMAL greeting used in other cultures)

LOL. I didn't say the fucking grocery store.

I see all of this guys as just another man. I expect you to show me the same respect as you would the Dali Lama if we met.

And I see a lot of crying in this thread but it didn't seem to me like the Dali Lama was upset by the whole thing.

BTW I asked my younger brother quickly on the phone what he thought about it. He hasn't heard about it but he didn't think it was disrespectful.

Not really because from what I can tell my brother isn't one to fist bump.

Hard to say what he will do.

I think its your mouth that makes you hate the fist bump so much. You never know who is trying to great you or trying to put one on your chin.

Can you show me an news clip where the Dali Lama says that he felt like he was disrespected by the Mayor?

James

Flexin 09-29-2009 05:26 PM

I got a handshake/bow and a bracelet... He didn't high five me, slap me some skin or fist bump me.:idk:

IMHO the fist bump is not a greeting anyway, it more of a replacement for the "high five", way to go man kind of deal.

marko138 09-29-2009 07:44 PM

Flexin, you're right. It's a sign of respect. The mayor is showing this guy one ounce of respect. This dude is one of the most recognizable religious figures in the world, I think he deserves a proper greeting, not a fist bump.

I know there are alot of crooked politicians in the world, but this guy is holding public office and outta hold himself in a little higher regard. I woulda put on a nice suit and extended my hand, or hell, even figure out what is the Dali's customary greeting and done that.

I'd show you, the Dali, and anyone I meet the proper respect, and it wouldn't be in the form of a fist bump.

Flexin 09-29-2009 08:24 PM

I asked my wife and she thinks you guys get worked up over nothing.

Did anyone have on the audio? He said he wanted to him a custom there. So really what is so wrong with that? And to get it straight. That is not how he greeted him. He did it Dali's way then wanted to show him something that is done in the US. It wasn't a sign of disrespect.

When visiting different country's people normally get shown a thing or to that is done in that area. It could be smoking a peace pipe or taking your shoes off before walking into a house.

Everyone has a right to their opinion. Mine is that the Mayor did respect the Dali Lama and was VERY excited to meet him.

It was a fist pump not the shocker.

I love how the dipshit media is portraying fist bumps as something new. Shits been around for more than 2 decades. It's about time suburban/rural people got their head out of the sand and learn something about modern culture.
