Pics of the new Buell and a quick review
This all worked out really weird. I went in Wednesday and negotiated a great price on an 09 XB12XP, called the bank, and walked out planning on buying the bike. I had to wait till Friday to get the check, which I figured would give me a few days to solidify my decision. Needless to say the news on Thursday changed things a bit! I was able to renegotiate the price and had a rode my new Uly home on Friday.
Why did I get a new bike? I was ready for a change. I've been riding long enough to know what I enjoy about motorcycles and this bike fit the bill to the tee. Comfortable two up touring, must be able to handle in the twisties, and fun to ride. My wife and I did 100 miles on Sat and I was shocked how confidence inspiring this bike is. I was following a good friend on an 08 Tuono and had no troubles keeping up. At no point did I feel like the bike was unsettled. At the end of the day, the wife and I both had a great time, and no back pain! So here are the pics. I have no intentions on selling the SV or the Aprilia. The SV is destined to be a track day bike. And the Ape, well, its still the bees knees. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...y/IMG_1258.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...y/IMG_1256.jpg Are they glaring back there? http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...y/IMG_1266.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...y/IMG_1265.jpg As you all can see, I HATE Vtwins. :) http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...y/IMG_1263.jpg The wife and I after our maiden voyage. Forgot to add, it was in the low 40s when we left and the heated grips were quite nice. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...XXX/Uly/-1.jpg |
Post up what type of mpg you see after a few tank fulls....
|
mmm tuono....
um i mean new bike! cool! glad you like it ;) |

Buells fuel numbers are very optimistic.
If I see 110 miles before the fuel light comes on, I'd be surprised. You have a slightly larger tank, you should be good for 130 to 150. |
I had the Uly with the race kit (exhaust, ECM, Filter). It didn't matter if you beat on it or rode it easy, I regularly got 50 MPG.
I have a HEAVY throttle hand and am 6' and weigh 250 with gear (not the best for aerodynamics). A lighter rider with a smaller "cross section" could see 60-65MPG. Best tank I ever got, I went 180 miles before the fuel light came on. Usually the light came on at 150 miles. |
That is great.
Any ideas on mods/upgrades? If you dont mind... what price did they give ya the bike for on Friday? Man... I bet you are counting your blessings for that check not being ready till friday. Isn't it great how things work out! WOW |

Once the light comes on, you have 29.5 miles. NO MORE! Don't ask me how I know.

I was talking to the finance guy at my dlr. He said there were a few of those. The dealership can't do anything about it. Told the customer to call buell and/or corp directly.

It's really strange how it all went down. I'm really diggen this bike now that I'm not redlining it every shift. |

I was riding a YZF600R at the time so what did I try to do? Wrap up the RPMS! And I remember the feeling distinctly... Oooooh... here comes the power... and then at ~4500rpm... poof... rev limiter. It didn't stop me from being interested in Buells, but it certainly made me realize the striking difference in motors. |
The happy spot for the XB engine is around 4,000 and you ride the torque curve to around 6,000 and shift.
It ain't like a 600 where you have to rev the crap out of it. |

Yes yes, I'm taking it easy through break-in. |
Quote:
You get all the top end rush of a 600 with the "fist of an angry god" torque of a twin. Best of both worlds. Once the break in is done, you are gonna love that motor! Make sure to set the suspension BY THE MANUAL. You can't set a Buell to "standard sportbike settings". It will make all the difference in the world. |

I need more time to get a feel for the bike so I'll have a better idea what needs adjusting. |

Considering we are talking about the air-cooled XB motor rather than the 1125 motor, your point is lost. Would you like to compare how and where either a 600 or 1000 makes peak torque. I'd be willing to bet that there is more torque in an XB motor at 4,000 than your GSXR at 4,000. Compared to the XB mil, you do have to "rev the crap out of it" to get more torque. Just sayin'. |

71.9 @ 5750 http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...e_dyno_cha.jpg GSXR 79.9 @ 8500 and the GSXR is making about 65 ft/lbs at 4500 http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...ce_dyno_ch.jpg I'm not sure but I'm guessing they're the same or really close...and for the record, the Buell has 200 more ccs than my bike so nyahh!!! Anyway, I am honestly joking but if you want to get into it... I didn't force Buell to use an inferior engine configuration, you know. That's my biggest problem with this whole situation, first you all tell me how great the Buell is and then you start making excuses for the air cooled engine or the ZTL brakes, the 473lb weight, etc...I didn't design the fucking thing, why is it my fault? Anyway, I understand that some people love these bikes and that's great, but that doesn't make them "better". The fact remains that both the 1125R and the XB12 have more than 1000ccs and shouldn't be compared to 600s like it's some "apple to apple" comparison. That's bullshit imho! Hey, here's another chart and this bike does have more torque at 4000!!!:rockwoot: http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...125Rhorsep.jpg Anyway, this is the very definition of beating a dead horse! Get it? Buell's symbol is Pegasus! Come on man, you're taking this way too serious! I'm sure that you'll do fine and this will all be a memory in a few years.:rockwoot: Hell, I had money on a GTS1000 and got a V-Max instead. I was going to buy it for almost $13,000! Three months later Yamaha dropped it and the price to about $8,000...:panic: God, I would have been pissed!!! |
I don't think anyone is making any excuses for either Buell power plant here (or the ZTL brakes).
The engines are just different. You know what is interesting about your first graph? The Buell is the ONLY air-cooled bike in that line up. Almost like someone WANTED to show Buell in a bad light. That couldn't be right, though, could it? Why not compare the Buell against OTHER air-cooled bikes? Talk about "apples to apples". You also do understand that those charts are showing HP not Torque, right? I think that was the original point. I have two engines. One that has a displacement of 5.7L and one that has 3.2L. Which one makes the most HP? Which one makes the most Torque? |

Yea it's fucking impossible to find a torque chart!!!! I posted those for illustration purposes only. As far as "apples to apples" goes, well hey your boy brought his product to market as "competition" to the Japanese. Besides, who else is stupid enough to run an air cooled motor on a sport bike in the 21st century? Who would you like to compare Buells to? I mean OTHER than inline 600s? I mean, they get compared to other twins of similar ccs and you aren't happy, they get compared to inlines of similar ccs and you aren't happy. Are you seriously telling me that the only way your bikes can legitimately compete with the Italians and the Japanese is if we only compare them to bikes with half the displacement? Gee I wonder why they went out of business.... Oh and my point about ZTL and whatever was that it was marketed as an improvement but when ever the brakes are criticized...:idk: Dude, I'm hoping that you are just messing around and aren't serious here... you seriously sound like the guys on Pinks that bring a car to race and spend the whole show complaining that the other team's car is better/faster and they should be handicapped accordingly.... BTW I'm sure that Buell's demise was all part of an elaborate conspiracy on the part of the American motorcycle press to destroy the only American sportbike... Ha found one! I believe it shows that a GSXR1000 makes about 65 ft/lbs at 4500 which is probably more than most, if not all 600s make period... http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...ke_compari.jpg |
Suzuki was running an air-cooled motor until the last iteration of the Bandit, Ducati STILL runs several air-cooled models, as does BMW.
Honda is coming out with a new air-cooled model. The sad part is that 600 and 1000 fan boys can't think of anything else to compare so they try to compare dislike engines to try to prove their point. The reason there are not two flavors, 600 and 1000 is that people want and buy other flavors. A liter bike is fine, but it isn't the pinnacle of all motorcycle existence. There isn't a SINGLE liter bike owner that has the ability to utilize 100% of their bike. Period. Unless you race, you have unused capacity. So what? A liter bike on the street is like a mom with an H2. You are NEVER going to have to scale Pike's Peak to get the groceries or take your kids to soccer practice. Why have an 8000lb behemoth with 18" ground clearance and the ability to scale at 45+ degrees? Just to say you have it? Whatever makes you happy. Different strokes. |

Quote:
U huh, and here is the last argument of the underpowered... "you don't need all that on the street...." Okay, so first your bike's motor is AWESOME and better than anything else because of it's incredible torque..." Oh wait, it doesn't have more torque? Oh well, you can't use all that power on the street anyway... You must really hate the new BMW, huh? BTW the Bandit is oil-cooled and they changed in 2007 to water cooled because it's better.... Besides, none of those bikes are "sport bikes" nor do they claim to be and no one was trying to race them against 600s in either formula extreme or Daytona Sport bike. |
Quote:
Do you race? No one but you is trying to make the point that their bike is "better" than anyone elses but you. Why bother even producing the 600s? By your logic, they shouldn't even exist because they are "under powered" compared to the 1000s. Doesn't matter if you "need" it or not, you (singular) can't use 100% of your bike's capacity on the street. Never said it shouldn't exist or that you shouldn't have it. Just saying that you can't use it on the street. You can't really use 100% of the XB motor either. I'm not racing an XB, so it doesn't really matter. You aren't racing your GSXR, so it doesn't really matter. You are trying to make points that are irrelevant. We aren't even talking about the 1125 motor. Is there some sort of neurotic need to continually justify your bike purchase decision? Are you insecure about your bike? I've owned an XB, and even given the choice between the XB and 1125 platforms, will pick the XB again. It's a unique motor that provides very satisfactory feedback, feel, and enjoyment. Me enjoying the XB doesn't take anything away from your enjoyment of your GSXR, does it? |
Quote:
Oops I forgot the old last ditch argument," You ride what you like and I'll ride what I like" position, not to mention the "what's wrong with you?" stance. Which comes AFTER they can't win the argument with facts. Look dude, I made a joke about how you all were comparing the XB to a 600 and oohing and ahhing. As far as I know, you don't even own a bike what so ever... I never said that my bike is better than anyone else's, although it is... Oh and they raced the XB in Formula Extreme previously and they still sucked even though they were allowed to modify the bikes much more than the other manufacturers. Anyway, I'm not justifying my bike in anyway, it requires no justification. My bike has obvious advantages that don't need any explanation. Many actually believe that the liter bike is a far better platform for a street bike for many of the same reasons that you attribute to the Buell. Don't ask me why they still make 600S, it seems like a waste of time to me too! I'm poking fun at you, period. Lots of people derive full enjoyment from 250s, hell some people even like HONDAs, if you can imagine that. Hell, I got into it with a guy that swears that his WR250 is a better street bike than mine!!! Hell, he had the same arguments that you do!!! |

How do you like the 1125R? I am seriously thinking about it for a second/play bike. For these prices, I can hardly resist... Once this crap blows over, I'll be able to sell the damn thing for about what I can buy it for now.:rockwoot: I have a bunch of friends that ride Harleys that this would be a good bike to take riding with them. Plus I think that my gf would like it once she got over the styling. |
