What's your limit?
When it comes to riding what is/are your limit(s) Limit defined as those things that keep you from riding at given times for example, night riding, rain, snow, arthritis or other medical conditions, length of the ride, heat, city/hwy slabbing, riding solo, riding in groups etc...
|
Night
Frost Rain Solo - minus commuting to work, though I did get in a short stint a month or so ago after work. Heat - if it means my bike will have to bake in the sun... don't like that and won't ride those days. |
What's wrong with a little snow riding???
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-...85_2828583.jpg Due to so much work and school I usually don't ride if I see rain, plus I work outdoors and don't dig getting wet on the way to work and then staying wet through work to be wet at school. Dark, Rain, and windy is about the only thing that will cause me to pull over if it's too bad |

High winds and temps above 100 during the day.

cash. (or lack thereof)
|
Exhausted and add two from the following.
Cold dark windy I can deal with two, but not 3 |
I likr riding solo, and I like riding with particular groups; my only limitation with groups is that if I'm unfamiliar with any of the riders, I'll hang in the back, and keep a bit of distance.
So my limitations are primarily weather related: Rain - if I'm already out and it starts raining, I'll keep going, but if it's already raining, I'll opt to cage it. Wind - hmmm, sustained winds over 25 mph, not my thing. Very common here April to June. Snow - no chance we'll get it but also no chance I'd ride in it. Heat - hmmmm, over 100, kinda miserable with the humidity, so I'd pass. Cold - colder than 38-40 (I have never found good winter gloves that I like). Fog - if visibility is under about 2 miles (esp early morning hours) I'll pass. Night - no issues here. I like night riding. |
gusty winds-- so not my thing if its over 25-30 mph
rain doesnt bother me much. cold, yeah, no, Ill pass..... |
Cold isnt much of a factor for me, I tolerate it rather well and just bundle up or fir eup the gerbings. Some mornings if I am commuting and its like high or mid 30's and am not feeling it I will take the car.
Bad winds i will also shut it down, I have to go over a bridge when working my side jobs so that can be sketchy. I roll the dice with rain, if I can make it to work dry and its not a ragin gmonsoon comming in later I will ride. Extreme heat, if I know I am doing straight hwy stuff and will be moving I will ride but if it look slike there will be traffic I will take the car. |
if I'm on a trip... there's nothing I won't ride in. if I'm at home though... I may just choose to pass this time... but I've ridden in snow, rain, hail, hurricaines, floods, freezing rain (always a favorite), fog...
to be honest... riding in that weather is fun for me... it's a challenge... I keep it slow enough that I'm not gonna get hurt too bad... and can pick it up and keep going if I do go down.... but I have a blast (as long as I'm wearing enough layers and warm!) |
I've got alot of limits. First, heat. I dont ride above about 85. Fuck it, I'll take my Jeep and crank the AC. Riding isn't fun in heat. Cold. Cold sucks. Though, I'm riding in colder weather this year than I ever have. So, once the highs come down to the mid 40's I'll put it away. Used to be I'd only ride in sun between 60 and 85*.
Rain, I won't go out specifically in rain, unless I have to. And I have. Whatever. Not that big of a deal. Night doesn't bother me. |
Ice, snow and cold rain.
If I had a tard, it would only be cold rain. |
Night, precipitation, temps(cold), and booze.

Snow/Ice
If it's already raining and I'm at home I'll cage it. I'll ride in the rain if I'm already out and it starts. Fog...got caught in it in the mountains with close to zero..ok about 20 feet of visibility and that was no fun but I managed. Hot...above 95...I'll cage it because I do wear full gear. Cold...below 50...I'll still ride but it's just not as fun. Below 40...I'll just cage it. I've ridden when it was in the 30's but like I said...just not as fun. Night time doesn't really bother me except in the back country due to an over abundance of deer in my area. I don't really do group riding much anymore...prefer just two or three or at the most four or five and that being people that I know and trust their habits/abilities. Usually it's just two or three of us. |
Cold weather (never seen Ice or snow, but those are a definite no).
Dark - I love night riding, but my night vision has gotten so bad its not worth the danger. Thats about it. If its a slight rain, no biggie, if its heavy and I have the right gear, theres no stopping me. If I dont have rain gear I might pull over or push through, depends on how froggy Im feeling. |
Ice or snow will keep me off the bike no matter what.
Other than that, it's dependent on what I'm doing. Commuting - I'll cage it if it is raining when I leave or I know for a fact it's going to be raining on my way home. Going on a trip - Rain doesn't bother me at all, so it's just ice and snow that would keep me home. Heat/cold doesn't really bother me all that much. We get 105F here in the summer and I still ride and I've seen 15F in the winter here and still rode. |

Thats another thing, no deer around where I live but depending on where I am going that would be a factor. Tom |

Ice is definitely a limit, tho- like heading through Flagstaff in March, watching all the snow melting into the roads in the last of the afternoon, sun, then seeing the temperature tick down into the low 30s... yeah, I think I'll be staying here tonite. :nono: I'll also take the truck if the heat index is supposed to break 100 degrees... that's why I paid the big bucks for a vehicle with air conditioning. I guess you could say that riding with groups is also a limit... won't keep me from riding, just from riding that stretch of road at that particular time. |
winds of 45+mph
cold (below 30 degrees) Heavy rain when I leave home if going somewhere other than just for a fun ride |
A broken leg or a broken hand might keep me from riding. Seriously, that's it.
I've ridden in 116 degrees in Arizona in summer. I've spent 4 days in 38 degree temps in Canada. I've ridden the Pacific Coast highway where it's a windy biatch. I've put more miles on my bike after the sun goes down than alot of people have put on their bike altogether. Hell, I've ridden in snow in Colorado and hail in Wyoming. I guess we all have different tolerances for weather. |

38 degrees is cake. |
I severely pulled a muscle in my neck about 2 yrs ago, think of the muscle that would prevent a bobblehead from bobbling and you get the picture. Anyway, since then on extended rides I get tight and have muscle spasms, anything over 300 miles becomes a painful ordeal, if not for that I could ride forever I feel. It continues to get better but not quite the same just yet.

Cars...and the morons who drive them.
I am seriously thinking about track only from now on. |

Anything below 60F unless I'm commuting to work.
|
Deer (early morning and late at night in the fall) and anything under 18 degrees F - that's about where riding stops becoming fun
