Acceptable reasons to ride a trike???
Most motorcyclist do not recognize trikes as "bikes" and personally it's two wheels for life for me. Here's the only reasons I find it acceptable to ride a trike:
1) you are at least 62 yrs old (it's good enough for medicare so you get a pass) 2) You have some sort of medical condition or disability 3) your spouse or riding partner/companion weighs more than the rated weight of any two wheeled vehicle. Any other acceptable reasons to riding/owning a trike from those of you that are diehard twowheel guys/gals? |
I never really considered them....always thought they were a bit hokey.
But a couple of years ago I met a couple while on vacation with my father. They had this crazy trike with a trailer. Sure it may seem hokey now but they were in their 70's and still riding. That's cool! My father is 61 and he's already said he'll get a trike if it means he gets to keep riding. |
none, get a convertible, trikes are a hazard.
You are no longer riding, you are driving. |
No acceptable reasons. They are teh gheyz.
|
I guess trikes are like motorcycles with a cane.
|
Theres a one-legged scooter rider in my town. He sits on his crutch. Looks hilarious, actually. He don't need no stinking trike.
|
Ever since that couple impaled themselves on a boat at the dragon on a trike, those things have been written off by me as useless. They handle like shit. A car will be much more fun and you can have climate control by putting up the top.

They are not for me but to each their own.
The only reasons I see are if you have a disability or are just too old (whatever that is) to ride a motorcycle. :idk: If I get to that point...I'll just cage in in a vert I guess. |

I fail to see how age would motivate someone to switch from 2 wheels to 3.
Disability, sure, but not age. My guess is most 3-wheelers never rode a bike before. |

Maybe they look at a trike sort of like a bike with training wheels. :lol |
trip - what happened at the gap exactly? are there pics?

My Dad's got a Goldwing Trike. Thing is as big as a car (it's the ONLY one of their vehicles that lives in the garage  ). He rode regular bikes when he was younger, then got the Trike a couple years ago; he's got medical issues, which can leave him tired more than anything. But it's perfect for my parents; my Mom rides 2-up with him, and he goes on a lot of cross-state adventures with his friends.
He took me for a ride when I was out there in June, and it was actually a lot of fun. Not my cup of tea, but they love it. And handling isn't SO much of an issue for them, since they're in West TX where the roads are straaaaaaaaight and flat. And Trip, as for convertibles, they looked at a few a couple years back, but at 6'6", he looks OVER the windshield on most of them. |

Inverted trikes are pretty useless as well, they look cool but suck. I have ridden the spyder and that thing is terrible. Quote:
They make convertible luxury cars that allow for more room, he doesn't have to get a tiny sports car. Vettes can also fit a very large person rather easily. |

I cant believe you guys are dogging people for riding trikes. Regardless of their reasons (and most have a GOOD reason) at least they are RIDING. |

Lemme see, I cant use my legs, Im paralyzed but I dont want to stop riding. My legs are too weak to hold up an 800 lb bike? What are my options? a)Not Ride b)put training wheels on an SB (which is STILL technically a trike) c)or get a real trike that I can still travel on and see the countryside |
i think the leaning trikes are not worthless at all, did you see the ones i posteD?

 I should have realized it, Im cranky lately, must be this incredible job I've got. |
I think people should be able to ride what every they want to spend their money on. Trikes are not motorcycles, they are trikes and most trike riders know that. I do not think I would ever choose to ride one but I will never judge anyone that does.

I will never forget listening to Dr. Laura explaining her reasons for having a trike and not a motorcycle.
At one point in her life she had a Honda Rebel. From what she said it was obvious she was very inexperienced. She hit some gravel and crashed. So now she has a trike because it's 'safer.' Other than not falling over on their own, there is nothing safer about a trike from what I can see, you are still exposed to the elements. If she had learned how to ride the damn motorcycle in the first place she probably would not have crashed. Just another example of how people justify things in their minds rather than accepting the responsibility that they screwed up. |

To me it is no different than me choosing to ride a sportbike and my sister choosing to ride a Harley. Quote:

I wouldn't classify them as an auto or a motorcycle since you do need a special endorsement to operate one. |

I actually got "in E-trouble" when I said something to a guy who said they triked out his wife's bike. I asked "Is she old enough to draw social security?". He said NO she's tired of holding the bike up in the wind. WTF!! :td: My uncle has a triked HD. He's a paraplegic. He rides this mystery design trike kit. Air shifter. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...KevinTrike.jpg You can see his handicap plate. The chrome fishpole holders on each side hold his walker that he uses to walk. I have never met anybody that uses one the way he does. He uses it backwards. You'd have to see him get along. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...vinTrike2a.jpg |
You ride, motorcycles, four wheelers, snowmobiles, lawn mowers, and yes, trikes...

My thing is this... at what point do you draw the line. There was a trike out made by some company. Can't remember, it had a ford steering wheel, windows, and a auto trans. But still they talked about the wind in your hair etc. I call BS.
I myself hate trikes. My uncle I cut slack cause of his handicap. Its understandable. Otherwise, NO. Too hard to hold and/or ride the bike in the wind. Too bad! |
