800cc Race Replicas.
Okay. I'm fairly new to motorcycles and still don't follow MotoGP too much. But I guess they went from 1000cc(From 500cc two strokes) bikes to 800cc bikes and from what I have gathered everyone liked them better due to better handling and such(Not sure on the validity of this).
However I am curious how much the factories (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, etc) follow in the footsteps of the MotoGP. I know a lot of car technology gets derived from Formula 1(Paddle shifters, suspension, etc) So I'm curious if hte 800cc bikes from MotoGP could result in manufactures building 800cc race replicas for the street? Because a lot of people love the GSXR750 but are Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki fans. THough I heard Yamaha made a R7 that was only a limited production and in Europe at that. What's your take? |
750 class kind of died out a bit.
kaw used to make the zx7r, but popularity just weaned. they kind of own the rights to the 250 class now, like suzuki owns the rights in the 750 class. (figuratively speaking) my guess is the big 4 have no plans for it. They get most of their brand loyalty from races like supersport and superstock, not MotoGP. although GP style shifting and "shorty" pipes have come directly from the motogp circuit. |
they had r7's here
|
thats a limited production.
|
The closest they get to "replica" is the paint. They can't make a street bike that is competitive at any cc. They leave that to WSBK.
They will make them as soon as Ferrari makes a street version of their F1 car ;) |

If you think those repsol hondas running around can even hold a flame to the bikes on the track then you've got nuts where your brains should be. |

surprisingly, zoomy, those only add 2hp to the belt, and thats after caliper bearings have been bored out and ohlins stickers have been placed on the forks.

you might want to upgrade your headlight fluid from halogen to Xenon while your at it.
make sure you change the liquid in the LCD display too... hate it when that shit goes out. and don't forget to change the air in your tires... expired air robs you of thousands of HP! |
You guys don't upgrade your muffler bearings?
|
i do that when i swapped out for a T2 roto-girter
|
SHIT! I knew there was something I was missing... gotta add that to my list... just ordered my Type R stickers... got 46 of them... I'm hope'n with those and the ultra light air I got in my tires... I should be putting down an extra 5000hp... but I may throw an ICY HOTT STUNAS sticker on too... to push it to the 7 mark...

Damn. I leave for a bit and we get one hell of a slide.
I was referring more to the engine size. I said Race Replica as in they are desgined to look like race bikes. When I get another bike I want one with more low end pop but nothing like a Litre. A 750-800cc bike would be nice. I was curious that if enough interest was sparked maybe the manufactures would try to compete with each other in the 750-800cc class. Oh yeah. The R7 was very limited production and I think my buddy found one here in America. They wanted only $30,000 for it. But from what I understand they were badass. |
Go 1000 VTwin... it's not gonna have the top end of a I4 Litre... but it'll have more Tq and way sooner.

And yeah the R7 was bad, but was comparatively weak stock. It was the race ecm and other kit parts that made it a monster! Yamaha made just enough to make it legal to race in production series. Given the chance id get one too. |

Ducati 848 is nice but funds aren't even close.
I thought about a Triumph 675 but some said it dosn't feel much faster than a normal 600. So it will probably be a GSXR750 when I do get another one. As for the 1000cc V-twins. I rode my buddy's RC51 and loved the power and snap but really wasn't a huge fan of it. Felt heavy and turned odd to me. Then we raced to about 70mph and I maintained the lead until then. After that he walked away from me but I rarely go above 100mph. It'd be nice if they came out with some 700-800cc sport bikes but I guess Suzuki will be it for a long time. |
The Duc 848 isn't really that much more than a 600. Hell the race editions are getting their asses spanked by the 600RR across the pond.
|
I'd love it if Yamaha would bring back the R7 or make an R8. Eh, who am I kidding? You guys know I won't be buying anything nearly as soon as I really want.
|
I'm with you smittie, the 750 is the perfect size motor for me. I'd love it if the big 4 came out with an 800cc bike. I want something with tons of low end grunt, but I don't want to have to get a 1000cc vtwin to get it. I want something super light, loads of torque and wont kill me in insurance. I dont need to go 180mph, so the idea of a I4 liter does not fit with what I want. I also dont want a 600cc bike that doesn't hit it's peak power unto 9 million RPM. The Duc 848 is probably the closest thing to what I want followed by the GSXR750.
|
I have better lap times on my 748 than my 998
Though, given the choice between a twin, triple or I4... I would take anything but the I4 ;) |

Here's a few good companies. KTM Husky Aprilia Only negatives are small fuel cells and they wind out at just over 100. Not very fun at interstate speeds. |

It's kinda funny how some things change. I started out of a twin and now love I4s. I wouldn't turn down a duc if the price was right though. So I won't say I will never own another twin. |
It's called trickle-down technology. You may not see an 800cc bike put out, but you will see some technology put on their 600s, 750s or 1000s. For example, Yamaha has been using fly-by-wire technology on their R6 since '06 and the R1 has it for '08. Slipper clutches are now standard on most sportbikes, too.
FYI, MotoGP riders are breaking records on their 800cc bikes that were set by the older 990cc bikes. They still go over 200 on the straights, but they can carry more corner speed. |

Husky's are good at the 450/510 level, but they have had a few minor concerns at the big-bore (610) level. Nothing serious, and still a great bike. You forgot Husaberg, who makes a bad-ass race-ready tard. In my opinion? KTM FTMFW! I couldn't be happier with my 625, it's light, a torque monster, and cheap on insurance. Plus po-po's think it's a dual sport, and usually look the other way. As for fuel cells, yeah, filling up every 60-70 miles kinda bites. BUT, you can get bigger gas tanks for them. I'm 6'4", as for wind protection, nothing short of a Goldwing will give me any sort of wind protection, so gettnig a little buffeting doesn't bother me. And trip, who told you they wheeze out at 100? I got 100 out of a DRZ, my "max speed" indicator on my KTM right now is at 132. I think a little of that is due to wheel spin, but I would feel confident saying it'll go 120-125. And you'll have more fun on a tard at 60 than you will on a crotch rocket at 160! Rider, if you're ever in the Jax area you'll have to take a spin on the KTM. |

One of the best pros is you can go down and not have a damn thing broken and scratches don't matter. Where with a sportbike you pretty much ruin your life with a drop. |
i heard AMA is toying with getting rid of 1000cc class next year? :panic:
|
I heard that too... WTF for? I could kinda see maybe getting rid of all but one 1000cc class... but all 1000cc bikes all together? that's fuck'n dumb
|

Now NASCAR is buying AMA? Did they get sick of turning left? Are they going bikes vs. cars? |
I think Nascar already bought AMA... or I think they already did... :idk:
|
MotoGP classes are strictly race prototypes only. You won't be finding any of those bikes in production. Heck, Honda was using a V5 engine during the 990 phase, something you will never find in production. :)
All other classes use production models as their base. The R7 was intruduced as a very low production product (only 500 produced) to meet the race requirements. Poor thing never really took of and soon became a thing of the past when the 1000cc in-lines were allowed. Don't get all racing confused with MotoGP, as it's vastly different. Quote:
WTF? The admins have some mod that appends you last post rather than creating a new one? That's fucked up! |
yep yep. i wanna watch some racing tonight

intresting... so are there any classes that are going away?

he's talking about the power band difference between an I4 and Vtwin.
a twin has much more low end grunt, but tops out early, and the I4 doenst usually get any power until its up in the 6-7-8 k range. Trip was making a point that in recent years the I4's have allowed for more power in the lower revs, as opposed to the older I4's that were lacking much more. |
