Searching for a new bike.

as per this thread.

some of you may know i'm looking for a new bike. Bittersweet. Havent done this in a while.

I'm going to have between 5 and 6 k to drop on a new toy, i've been looking at this 929 so far.

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/6...8174401rw7.jpg
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/7...8174601zv7.jpg

he's asking 5k for it, which isnt bad considering its got a decent slip on (i'd sell)
nice fender eliminator, frame sliders, flushmounts, and is VERY CLEAN with only 8k miles.

It seems to have been maintained OKAY (theres really not TOO much you can fuck up in 8k miles), but nothing that would cause serious trouble down the road. runs good. but there are some kickers (there always are)

He is a retard. He fricking CUT the stock shift/brake levers shorter because he "only uses two fingers anyways" and he put the most ugly ridiculous grab bar on the back (looks like the spoiler from the car on joe dirt) by cutting two holes in the tail section and attatching it to the frame. so gay.

Other than this stupid shit the bike is so clean, cept for some stickers (im guessing they thought they added HP)

KBB is about 51XX, and i told him i would be thinking more around 4.7k. he said he was firm. i still like the bike.

still looking, but thoughts/opinions?

NeonspeedRT 05-01-2008 09:57 AM

Stay away. That "grab bar" is a 12 oclock bar. Stunters use it to know if they come too far back when doing a wheelie.

So the bike has more then likely been wheelied alot. If i'm not mistaken the way the motor on the 929 is set up, repeated wheelies can starve the motor of oil and cause long term damage.

I could be wrong on that part as i'm not a stunter. But I remember it was either the 929 or 954 that had issues from repeated wheelies.

But the 929 has definatly been stunted. Plus 5k is high. If you really like the bike and it really looks like it's in good shape, offer him $4,500 firm. If not take your money elsewhere.

Rider 05-01-2008 09:58 AM

That's a 12 o'clock bar for stunting. Check the fork seals for leaks carefully.
The 929 is a strong motor with loads of torque.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 10:00 AM

Thats what i was thinking when i offered 4700 to test the waters... only thing is this guy did not strike me as a stunter of any sorts. good heads up though.

also found a 2004 gsxr 600 about an hour away for 5k. 21k miles, but he claims its been well maintained and its spotless. Imma go take a look this weekend.

yea the seals were one of the first things i went to look for. specially when he told me there was a 520 conversion on the bike. i would have walked away then and there if he had not said he still had the stock sprockets.

the chi 05-01-2008 10:03 AM

Rather attractive I think, you can always repair or replace the tail section, if its clean and you get it checked out and it comes back no issues it looks like a good buy...as for the cutting the levers, well, thats not that big a deal either, I have a few friends down here that do the same thing...I wouldnt do it, but to each his own...

you didnt say dude was a stunter, so I assume the 12 o clock bar is for poser purposes only, but again, get a good check up by someone who knows before buying...

speaking of which, do shops offer this type of service? shed some light on it for me, peeps.

the chi 05-01-2008 10:09 AM

depends on the shop, i have several mechanic buddies that would hook me up, but I also track with them and ride on weekends with them...some will check it out for a fee...

OneSickPsycho 05-01-2008 10:10 AM

Don't get over anxious... You can find a better deal than either one of those bikes if you have a little patience... PM OTB... he was offering his bike buying secrets to anyone who PM'ed him in another thread...

Go into any shop and start talking to the service guy... Then offer him a case of his favorite brew to come look at it with you...

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 10:12 AM

Im not, i've been looking now for about 2 weeks and those are just the 2 best things i've found. i'll give OTB a pm.

Trip 05-01-2008 10:14 AM

Hell OTB may find the bike for him. He hooked Marko up. Tell him what you are looking for as well NTS.

What are you looking for so I can keep my eye out for good deals. Price range and such.

Rider 05-01-2008 10:17 AM

If I was you I'd decide on what(brand and size) bike I want and look for only that bike. Call arounf for insurance quotes too. The 600 is going to be a lot less to insure than the 929 and given your history, I think insurance is going to be a major factor in what bike you get.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 10:22 AM

already done. the 929 would be about 112 more/year so it'd come down to about 9 dollars more/month. I may end up moving my insurance in the near future though.

Looking at mainly 600s, FI, mainly looking for hondas (f4i's, early rr models) and suzukis, yamis and kaws have never felt as good underneath my butt.

want to stay in the 5k-6k price range, dont really want a project bike. want something i can put new tires on, chg the fluids, and start riding.

the chi 05-01-2008 10:25 AM

hmmm, back 2 years ago when I got my rr it was $5500 for an 03 with (i think) 5K miles...and perfect condition...

Rider 05-01-2008 10:25 AM

You can buy my bike for 5-6K.

did you get it from a dealer or private seller?

Trip 05-01-2008 10:29 AM

You should be able to find an awesome 03-06 600RR for that price range. Kyle got his track RR for under that and it has all the fork work done and a nice rear shock with all kinds of bonus extras. I will keep a look out for one.

Private seller, and a sig loan at the bank...bad interest rate tho, had to eventually change it over...

Im not really finding much of anything like that around here.

I've been scouring craigslist everyday, as well as ebay motors, and cycle trader. any other venues?
Im trying to keep my search range w/in 100 miles of my location, but if somebody finds something more locally to them i wouldn't mind a road trip for a good deal.

ahh, well i'm looking to spend straight cash, so that wont be a problem.

DLIT 05-01-2008 10:37 AM

Not sure what your plans are, but if you ever wanted to hit up the track, I'd stay away from litre bikes. You can have more than enough fun on a 600. I had a new found love for my bike when I hit the track.

im really leaning that way, for a multitude of reasons. track being one of them. I still plan on getting a track day in before indy. went and talked to a guy whom used to race at a repair shop a few days back (i work w/ his girlfriend). He said he could hook me up in a group that goes down to mid ohio all the time for about $200 / day if not less.

That bike has just been the first one i've gone to look at around here that was actually decent looking and worth a shit.

Here's my $.02. Stay away from bikes owned by retards. Period. There's no telling what else he tinkered with. You can usually tell if someone is a bike retard in about 5 minutes. Unless you yourself are a retard, in which case the seller will seem pretty cool. J/k about the last part. Stay patient and good luck.

The dudes a wannabe stunter, only squids put 12 bars on their bikes but dont have cages. Probably thought it would look cool. The 929 is a good bike, but id look elsewhere. That thing most likely has been pow powed one to many times.

When you plan on going? Im always up for a trip to look at bikes if I can make it.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 02:43 PM

i plan on being at rick roushe or however you spell it around six-o-clock.

JoJoYZF 05-01-2008 03:33 PM

Damn. If I didnt have to work Id take a ride down there.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 05:23 PM

no prob. after im done there im gonna go look at an 01 r6. 8k miles. very clean. older, mature owner (from phone conversation)...

only thing is he's asking 5500 (has a micron high mount and flush signals, integrated rear signals)... KBB puts it at 4750 and NADA puts it even lower.

we'll see how this goes.

http://images.traderonline.com//img/...mb_550x410.jpg

Cutty72 05-01-2008 05:32 PM

There's an 04 R6 up here with around 3500 on it, high mount micron and flushies, $5000.
Dude wants to get a Harley...

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 05:34 PM

tell him to ride it down to my neighborhood, i'll gladly buy it.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 08:29 PM

so i went to look at the r6. it was very clean. had mismatched tires. the guy was pretty laid back, he didnt seem to know shit about shit, said he just rode it as a commuter and what not. bike started good, looked good.

I asked what he was asking ( i already knew) and he says 5500. i say "well Kbb states retail is around 4800 at best". he says yea, he's aware of that, and he thinks the micron exaust, untertail, and flushies do the 5500 justice.

I flat out tell him i think the bike is worth 46-47 hundred, and put that on the table. He says 5k is the lowest he's willing to go. I politely agreed to disagree and told him i will check back in a week.

On the plus side, his girl was there the whole time, and i made sure to make an offer in front of her. Nothing is going to get a man to sell his bike faster than the scorn of a woman. also, he says he needs money for school, he just got married, whatever. He's 33 and in school, if i flashed 4500 in benjamins he prolly woulda taken it right there. either way imma let this one sit for a while.

Lamnidae 05-01-2008 08:31 PM

Good call NtS. 'pecially calling out the offer there in front of the woman. Fair price I think in this circumstance.

Guess he doesn't understand most typically when you put those "extras" into the bike, they're just that at resale... "extras." Not something to really negotiate w/.

keep us posted as to what happens.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 08:35 PM

oh i will. i'm watching craigslist, local forums, and cycletrader like a hawk.

t-homo 05-01-2008 08:55 PM

Good work. Hope you find something soon. I have been kinda looking and was about to get serious soon, but I think a deal on a 97 gsxr 750 just fell into my lap. Like trade mine and some cash for his. Hopefully all goes well.

Mr Lefty 05-01-2008 09:01 PM

well good luck... as for the first bike... the 929 as others have said... that's a 12 O'clock bar... even if it's not scratched I wouldn't trust that it's not been abused... too many other good deals out there to even bother with that bike IMO.

The R6 looks good... as for his exhaust undertail and signals make'n the 700 diffrence... remind him they are not new and not worth their new price... maybe worth 300 together to add to the price. IMO

Good luck! but be patient... I know it's a pain in the ass when you wanna ride... but it'd suck to jump a little quick into something that is just gonna bite your ass later... ya know?

definatly see if you can get a local shop guy to come look at it with ya.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 09:12 PM

I would think the longer you have on the new bike before the rally the better off you will be. You don't want to still be adjusting to it when you are at the gap. I wouldn't think so at least.

Mr Lefty 05-01-2008 09:22 PM

but would you rather be used to a shitty bike for the rally or not be used to a quality bike for a week... ya know?

I don't think you'll have to wait that long NtS... I'm sure lots of bikes will be going up for sale with summer starting. unfortunatly that's not the buyers season... but what can ya do

Yea, ive considered that, and i figure mid may is a good time to really start getting serious. my birthday is may 14, so maybe that will be my lucky day. but to be completely honest, i thought i was used to my F3 before i went down to the hill. boy was i wrong.

im seeing stuff popping up on craigslist all the time. just saw an add for a 2006 repsol replica for 4g's... yea right, we'll see about that one.

Mr Lefty 05-01-2008 09:29 PM

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself about going down on the F3 though... you just came out of winter... and how many months of not riding? AND... you hit gravel while avoiding road kill... could have taken any of us down... ya know?

and yeah... repsol replica huh...

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 09:33 PM

Im not really worried about it. was just wrong place wrong time, and a learning experience. could have been avoided, but better a lowspeed lowside than a high speed impact. Im just glad it happened in full leathers, there were some people nice enough to stop and help, and my brand new fucking helmet didnt get smashed.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-01-2008 09:36 PM

tbh, if i still had my f3, i would prolly have put about 1500 miles on it already if not more, so that wont be a problem.

Phenix_Rider 05-02-2008 12:25 PM

I've seen a Thundercat and an F2 or F3 at a dealer over this way. Not maintained to my standards though the bikes looked decent- crusty chains on 'em. Big haul for you too- they were in Bedford, PA. Another place in Somerset has an '07 650R for $4500. Seen private sellers with an SV650 and a VMax. The 650R was in great shape with low miles and dead stock (including stock tires).

Yeah I noticed that. I just threw that one on there at the end. I also found a badass black and gray version of the 600rr tribal but I think he wanted 6800 or 7 grand.

Dave 05-02-2008 05:38 PM

hey nts man, i have basically the entire summer off and the roomie has a trailer so if you spot something to the east i wouldnt have any problems transporting it for ya

NONE_too_SOFT 05-02-2008 07:10 PM

DAVE! that is most excellent. I will certainly make it worth your while if the right deal comes up, you talking sometime here in the next 3 weeks or what?

NONE_too_SOFT 05-02-2008 08:08 PM

ugh, my fucking eyes hurt from scouring the internet.

does anybody have any other sources than
ebay
craigslist
cycle traders
ohio riders
C.O.R.E.
??

Mr Lefty 05-02-2008 08:09 PM

might check your local papers :idk:

JoJoYZF 05-02-2008 09:46 PM

Other than those and papers Id say try expanding your searches a little bit farther out? My uncle has a trailer that we may be able to borrow if you find you one thats a little farther out if you dont want to ride it all the way back too.

If its not too ridiculous Id probably help you out. If its too far just jump on a plane

NONE_too_SOFT 05-03-2008 01:50 PM

got a couple good prospects to go look at later this week when i have cash in hand. First up, an 03cbr600 .11k miles. adult owner (has a full stable, making room) jardine exause, frame/swingarm sliders, ugly yellow windscreen. asking 5400

http://images.craigslist.org/0115070...878b00123d.jpg

next up an 05 R6, fender elim "aftermarket pipe" "new tires".also 11k miles. also said to be in excellent condition. Never dropped or wrecked. lein holder has title. This is a chick selling, said her and her boyfriend rode the thing. dont know how much i trust these two as compared to the other guy, but for 5500 its worth a look. heres a pic

2nd one may be a motivated seller, but i dont trust the seller as much as i would the first guy. The chick i talked to said she basically put it in her name for her degenerate boyfriend just so he could have a new toy... it really sounds shady, plus she said she will NOT go under 5500 for it.

The other seller has owned multiple bikes (cruisers and SBs), just sent me some high res pics of the honda, and i must say, it looks tempting. His asking price is also 200 bucks under KBB as is, so im not worried about having to haggle him down too far.

The CBR is taking priority at the moment. only prob is its about 2 1/2 hours away. ah wells... anybody in C-bus wanna party thursday night?

Lamnidae 05-03-2008 03:43 PM

k. the guy just sounds like he has way too many playtoys and is getting "wife aggro" to get rid of a couple....

Sounds like a pretty safe bet on that one.... Don't think the bike would have been abused at all.

He's asking what, 5.4? Show up w/ 5 flat in hand, cash, and I bet you'll ride the thing home.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-03-2008 03:43 PM

i will never buy a bike, which has an ad stating "this bike is FAST" ...

Not gonna buy an yzf600

While that 02 f4i is tits, it is a track bike, and i really am looking for something i can take to the track...

well if i ride the thing home... im gonna have to leave my car there. guess i should find a buddy to drive down w/ me.

OneSickPsycho 05-03-2008 03:50 PM

You could have that CBR street legal with a creative $50 and a couple hours time... That thing is cash money.

I hear what you're saying about that Gix750, but this guy never struck me as a toolbag... and that thing looks damn good.

Who am I kidding though, I'm just looking for someone to ride back up to Ohio with me in a couple weeks.

One of my friends bought an 05 600rr today for 5K. My dad called me today to tell my about an add in the local car trader. 01 Triumph 955i with 8K on it for 3600 dollars. Called as soon as I got off of the phone with my dad and it was already gone.

NONE_too_SOFT 05-03-2008 09:13 PM
