I've done SOME photography on the road (see this topic)....but NOTHING like that...and it was in the straights |
Some amazing shots in there! Nice find... going back in there to waste some more time. :)

Lame...
My Camera is fucking lame. Those are great shots (except for one...one of those sucked but I will let it slide since the rest of the shots were great) |
I took thousands of photos from the seat of my motorcycle at speed, many with a Fuji S5000 and the rest with a Nikon D70s. It becomes somewhat automated after a while, and you can get some unreal shots.
Edited to add: I never took any leaned over like that. Amazing. |
wow, awesome.
|
Yup probably one of the coolest series of photos i've seen in a while
|
I need a better camera
I have been doing this some with my point and shoot, photos never turn out well for me. Seems like he rests the camera some of the tall tankbag he has and that would probably help some a lot, it's like anything, just practice and it become second nature. For the rear shots, I wonder if he is using a mount. |

Here is how he does the front shots, rests the camera on the tankbag.
It's like dragging your hand with your knee on the ground, once you get use to using your legs, it's not much work for your arms and you don't have to use both. |
Been watching this thread over there. Has some really nice photos.

Brave guy there and some really awesome shots.
|
wow... that is all i have to say
|
Someone needs to show these dudes how to hang off a bike. You wouldn't need that much lean angle if you shift ur ass off the seat.
Nice pics anyways. |
How DARE they show themselves short of having perfect form :lol
|
Awesome pics. Sucks he's gotta reach across the top of the cam to take the pic...probly took some getting used to.
|
those are DAMN impressive!
I wanna try taking some photos like those this year... gonna have to figure out some fail safe if my grip fails. also wanna try finding a way of making a tank bag out of my pelican case... |
When I went to my VTX rally in Denver, CO I started taking pics on the fly like that. My camera was a smaller Sony Cybershot but I hung it from the strap over my neck like normal. I would just work it all left handed and hold it up to take shots. Granted only about 30% of them came out decent and you have to be real careful not to put too much attention on the camera  but it works... here's a couple I took (wish my camera was as good as his)...
I thought this one was cool... http://hphotos-snc1.fbcdn.net/hs208...._5005737_n.jpg over the shoulder... http://hphotos-snc1.fbcdn.net/hs208...._4066218_n.jpg http://hphotos-snc1.fbcdn.net/hs208....4_694313_n.jpg http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7199511_n.jpg My problem was having the windshield on the bike then, I had to raise the camera way up to clear it but it let me get some good scenery shots as I was riding that I wouldn't have other wise. I was riding 3-400+ miles/day all 4 days I was out there so not a lot of stops for picture taking ;) |
I think the biggest issue for me is gonna be my camera's weight. I dunno if I can take photos holding the camera the way he does, unless it's strapped to my hand.
I can hold it the way he does, but the camera is a bit heavy to hold out over the road just trusting my grip. I can hold it kinda cradled in my hand better... but again dunno if I'd feel safe holding my $1500 camera out there.... but I'm gonna work on it... try and get some good photos on my road trips. seeing as I don't like stopping very often or much. be cool to get some shots of the rally this way... but being on the DRZ, might be tough to keep up. really gotta figure out something for storage those are pretty good shots eric |
THanks Ebbs! I didn't mind hanging out a little with my little $400 Sony ;) But I didn't think to try those low angle shots either. With a camera like yours I'd definitely want it tied to me somehow! And you have to consider what you'll do in an emergency situation wher you have to grab the bar. With my neck strap I could just drop the camera and it wasn't hitting anything but me.

When I went skydiving, the photographer had 2 cameras attached to a helmet. One camera was a digi cam for still shots, and the other was a digi camcorder to video the whole jump. He had an eye piece that would with crosshairs so he knew what he was shooting, but to take a pic, he had an attachment going from the camera to his mouth and to take a pic he would just bite this piece and the camera would take a pic.
Something like that would be good for shots, not even having to take your hands off for a shot. Just get the camera set to how you wish, and shoot with that attachment. |

but I have a "skin" for the D300... that will help protect the body from short drops or bumps... but the lens will still be at risk. I'll figure something out... loop my hand through the strap a few times... plus with the wide bars not much it can bump into... (and my bike insurance will cover it ) |

also I have 12g's worth of space... so I can just delete the unwanted photos when I stop... and I have a spare battery (but they're usually good for all day shooting on a single charge) |
Eric...good pics man.
Ebbs...I would think strapping the cam to your hand would be sorta dangerous if you suddenly need to have control of the bike. |

I think that I would still get a camera mount and just leave it slightly loose so you can move it around.
Ram mounts sells a unit that mounts on the bars or on the tank. You can get to of the longer arms and a double ball connector to make it about an 18'' reach and quadruple articulating. What's go about this is that you can adjust it on the fly pretty easily and you can let go of your camera without fear. Obviously, this is just an example. Ram sells different length arms and different mounts, etc. If you invest in the remote cable as well, you could get some really good shots without compromising your or your friend's safety. |

I tried the camera mount way on a ball-head mount at first. The camera was a Fuji point and shoot so no weight at all. If you didn't tighten it down and make it immobile it would flop around. It also transfers all the vibrations from the bike into the camera and would destroy a DSLR in no time. The camera mount turned out to be waaaaay too much trouble.
Like I said, the best way for me was putting velcro on the top of my tankbag and on the bottom of my camera and throwing the strap around my neck. |

Maybe next time." *Sigh* "Yes, mam...." other guys get to have their balls whenever they want, shucks... "You BETTER not be mumbling in there!!!! "No mam"*pouting* |
