Cars that are built to last...GM

Dave 01-21-2010 10:13 PM

maybe if they built it where the kids die and the car survives intact they'd learn to drive better

Dragonpaco 01-21-2010 10:15 PM

at least it wasnt a real GTO

#1. ferraris are the only "real" gto.

"o" stands for omologato, which means Homologated

gm banned racing in 1963

add all this together and the 60s and 70s "goats" are rice. pure and simple

I'd take a Monaro based GTO over an old GTO any day.
However I've already admitted to liking Mini's and Miatas so my opinion should be taken with a spot of herbal tea

monaros actually raced so the name fits somewhat better. old guys get real mad when you hit em with the facts and point out that the new one is more "real" than the old

I don't care about how well they represent the true definition of "GTO". The car has its own history of being the first muscle car, regardless of the name. It could have been called the Pontiac Crap Heap and what GM did with it would be no different.

I thought the new GTO was actually a well done modern interpretation of what GTOs had been in the 60s. The fact that the 6.0 LS2 version likely had more power than any 60s GTO was icing on the cake.

whats elitist about it? gm claims to be the first people ever to put a "big" engine in a smallish stripped down car and cokehead john stole the name from ferrari. thats just me being honest

The difference is they actually did put a big engine in it, not a "big" engine. A 389 cubic inch (6.3 liter) engine is pretty big for a factory motor, then and now. According to your definition an AC Cobra would be the epitome of "rice".

no, you missed the point. They sold a car that COULD NOT BE RACED with homogolation special written on the side. call it a ventura or tempest and i wouldnt give a fuck.

Sorry, I didn't realize part of your post was irrelevant. Basically this comes down to you thinking the name is inappropriate. Did you know the Grand Prix never actually raced in a Grand Prix? Who cares?

lol, im leaning hard towards a starion/conquest with a dodge 2.4 swap. already have the engine, i was going to build it to srt4+ spec for my daytona but i really dont want to eff with fwd any more. would just need to scoop up a bellhousing from a liberty 2.4 and a mkiii supra turbo tranny to mount it up. could easily get 4-500 out of it and stay true to my roots

...I'm not sure I can even picture that.
But by all means, if you do it, I want to see it.
