how to sell a classic car, thats still a project

my old old boss has asked me to help her son sell his project 72 chevelle, he's had it 5-6yrs and hasn;t really progressed, and now he's bought a fixer upper house.

he's spent a boat load of $, says $20k, but still has a long way to go. and really had no idea about how to work on cars so he paid others to do alot of work and now has alot of parts.

top of the line stuff

baer brakes
hotchkis susp
eibach springs
383
roller cam
almost ready for paint

http://i49.tinypic.com/xnafpx.jpg

he's wanting $10k, does that seem reasonable?

other then craigslist, where else?

and yes if i help sell it i get a commission, cash to add to my unemployment.[/

Riceaholic 01-27-2010 01:47 AM

tranny? interior? glass? That's not a complete motor....

How much is left of the original? Trim? Chrome?

I'm just bringing up shit that will nickel and dime you to death...

RACER X 01-27-2010 01:52 AM

turbo 350

no interior other then the tore up original

he had a complete running car when he bought, and took it all apart......now what......

he said he had an offer for $8k a bit back, and turned it down.......that was stupid.

and he says if he can't get enough he'll build it..........lol

several more thousands of $ and many yrs.....

we would like to buy an old hot rod, but it's gonna be built and running, rebuilding a car is alot more work and mech. knowhow then i care to deal w/

BobTheBiker 01-27-2010 02:02 AM

$8k is pretty reasnable IMO. anyting higher is totally unrealistic to me. especially for a car that isnt all original. for any non running project car though, to me, $4k is my upper limit, since I know exactly how much of a pain in the ass it is, how much time, and money it costs, and all that shit. its a LOT of work and headaches to deal with these project vehicles. not to mention money.

RACER X 01-27-2010 02:12 AM

oh he;s got all the orig. parts in boxes, but they're not in great condition and could do w/ replacing......

i have alot of pics, i need to download them to a photobucket account or something.

BobTheBiker 01-27-2010 02:35 AM

well, in this economy, $8k is a really good offer honestly.

karl_1052 01-27-2010 07:43 AM

He won't get an $8K offer now.
Projects are usually sold at huge discounts.

He would be better off to finish it himself and then sell it.
He can take courses at community colleges that will teach him how to restore a car, so he can stop paying others to do the work.

I would not pay more than $3-4K for a project like that.

Hell, the glass alone would probably cost $2000+

Yep.

He should have taken the $8k.

He has two options: Finish it or give it away (<$5k).

lauralynne 01-27-2010 10:21 AM

I will answer when I get to work. This is what we do: www.restoreyourcar.com

lauralynne 01-27-2010 11:28 AM

paint job alone on that car is going to be another $10-$15k - this is a HUGE project and he's not very far along despite how much money he's spent. And as a coupe, it's not a valuable. He's in over his head and should take whatever he can get - $8k is a GREAT deal - if he can get $5k and get it out of his driveway he'll be doing well.
1972 is not a desirable car. He might like it a lot ($20k spent means he does...) but generally the earlier ones are far more desirable (and worth more)
Option 2 is to sell off the parts he bought on Ebay - try and recoup more of the retail on those. How long has the motor sat open like that? And is there a power assist booster with the Baer brakes? Lots of questions to get a more accurate price...but generally he's NOT going to get $20k back out of it - not even close. But he'll get more out of it by parting it back out than trying to pawn off the package.

Cutty72 01-27-2010 11:31 AM

Yeah, should have taken the 8K.

Pray for 5 and get it gone.

RACER X 01-27-2010 11:32 AM

lauralynne, so you own a resto shop.

thanks for the honest answer, cuz i really don't wanna spend alot of time for nothing, and i thought 8k was great, but he's still in love w/ that car.

i prefer a copycat 70-71 chevelle SS myself

Technically Louie owns it - I just brag about it...and learn by osmosis...

RACER X 01-27-2010 12:07 PM

cool, btw he does have all the glass

the car was running when he brought it home.

he's got the whole car scattered in his garage, somewhere.

Wow. Deja vu. I just literally gave my brother my '64 for Xmas. I bought it from my dad, and spend shit tons of time and $ on it. 327ci with a Muncie 4 speed.

Man, I love the Olds stuff (Buick and Pontiac slightly less).
Original engine from mine is in a bag in storage, waiting for the old man to come and get it. It currently has a 454ci small block (built from a 350DX diesel block).

Cutty72 01-27-2010 03:49 PM

Yeah, still has the 350 Rocket engine and turbo 350 tranny.
Must have some pretty long gears too, cause it will do 130+

My guess would be 3:23s - that's what mine had originally. Outside chance it may have 3:55s in it.

(now your screen name makes sense)

RACER X 01-27-2010 04:01 PM

yeah troy i remember that, i emailed him what lauralynn said, and now he says why not try an auction starting at $7500.........hmmm....

watching ebay, i;ve seen alot worse go for $5-6k......

here's all the pics

Mine was a 4-bolt main 350 with a Muncie 4 speed. Shoulda sold the wife and kept the truck

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Doesn't have enough bottom for 3:55's.

And that is where my SN came from

Kerry_129 01-28-2010 10:41 AM

I'd lean towards 'part it out', especially if the goal is to get it out of the driveway & recoup the max $ - but more hassle, of course.

101lifts2 01-28-2010 09:02 PM

Cutty nice '72....my fav. year Olds.

G-Rex 01-29-2010 09:49 AM

He better get to building. He'll be damn lucky to get half of what he wants out of it, parts or not.

There is still a TON of labor left in that, and for a project like that, it has to be a labor of love for someone, and that someone is not a dime a dozen guy.

I haven't tore down my '65 Galaxie that far yet. It's still in running condition and is in pretty damn good shape. I had a guy offer me 20k several years ago and I told him to go away. That car is just flat not for sale, for any price.

My 70 Camaro 350/350 would do 150+(indicated) on stock gearing so I would guess your Olds should do the same

Sounds like you're just the man for the job redflip So if we help you help her sell it, do we get a commission?

Homeslice 01-29-2010 01:31 PM

Other than Craigslist, you could try listing it in those things that sit on racks in gas stations. They always have a ton of older American cars in them. Either that or just list it on Ebay and hope that the bidder lives fairly close or else he wouldn't be willing to have it shipped.

Blank as in 0? Sure no problem, I'll even advertise for free!
I would love to have chip foose fix it up, but chances of that are slim.
