SCCA solo2

has anyone here ever ran in an autocross event before?

im looking at the events near me and it looks like some of my friends are interested in atleast trying it out and seeing what its all about

namely some of my real good friends

a mini cooper S, an accord, and possibly a mustang if i can talk him into it

from what i gather it seems to be a relatively safe, low speed event

so does anyone have an opinions?

I like the idea of having something to do when its cold out and i dont feel like busting the bike out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HsqL...layer_embedded

what is neat is i would have a chance to run nashville on the bike, then the next weekend take the wrx on it

the first meeting that i can attend is in april before the event and i plan on going and just talking to ppl and seeing if its something that i would be interested in persuring, and the cost is much cheaper, atleast upfront then the trackdays for the bike, $20 once you get your SCCA membership

(and I see this as a novice training course basically, they are big into beginner safety and making sure everyone has a good time while learning the ropes)
:wtfru:

This is something we plan on doing with our WRX this season; I've never driven in an event, but rode passenger with a friend a few years back, and was hooked!!!

Chris was Buccaneer region B-stock champion years ago so he could give you more info than I can on the specifics, but I'd say get on Nasioc so you can hook up with some other local peeps that plan on running in that event, and get out there and have some fun!!

So whats the current over/under on you keeping the car in running condition through the year?

Homeslice 03-21-2010 08:27 PM

I've done it. Best to treat it as competing against yourself, rather than trying to win the whole region, or else you'll spend a boatload of money on tires and mods.

With SCCA even if all you have is just a poly motor mount they'll throw you in a class with people modded to the hilt.

dReWpY 03-21-2010 08:42 PM

im pretty sure im in the modified street class, lol

That's not what I think. I know you, you are going to want to go for it and it's if the subby is going to be able to hold up to the kind of thrashing the drewpy will give it.

Pretty much what he said. The few times I did it I was thrown into a supper modified class because I had aftermarket suspnesion and strut braces. I was a good 10 seconds off teh leaders and the course was only 45 seconds long for them. Had one of the top guys take my car out and he was only able manage 2 seconds faster than me.

Its still a blast, just go out and compete against yourself or your friends, not the other competators there, it'll be more fun that way.

curses, im caught

dReWpY 03-21-2010 09:39 PM

im lucky that there is atleast one other noob that is going to be doing it with me and we can compete amongst ourselves seeing as he has a mini S we should be at least close at teh begining

Homeslice 03-21-2010 10:22 PM

Not sure how the Minis are running, but don't be surprised if he doesn't beat you. In autocross, small size & weight = advantage. The way SCCA sets up their courses, a stock Miata with a good driver will easily beat you.

The cooper S has 20 hp more and weighs 700 lbs more, do the math.

Homeslice 03-21-2010 10:54 PM

Weighs 700 lbs more than what?

dReWpY 03-22-2010 12:57 AM

im not surprised if he does, its going to be a great summer, the mustang guy is now agreeing to give it a shot

psychochild28 03-22-2010 03:31 AM

Mustang guy will bail and pretty sure if it's the mini i'm thinking of he'll be out too unless i'm driving it which he's offered. He is more likely to do it than mustang guy though.

was92v 03-22-2010 07:31 AM

My son has done it for years. It is just another form of Motor Meth. He has an RX7 he built, a Miata and is building up an MR2 Turbo... I guess a fix is a fix.

im not holding my breath for either, but it looks to be a damn good time even if i just go by myself

Cutty72 03-22-2010 03:38 PM

Few of my friends did the parking lot version of autocross. two of them also ran at tracks.
Good times, they ran a MazdaSpeed Miata, a stock Miata, a WRX, and a RX-8.

It was all driver skill. Placing was always the same.
1. Local guy with a Lotus Elise
2. Speed Miata
3. RX-8
4. Miata
5. WRX

One time a guy showed up with a VERY modded mustang. The car was never straight through the entire course, and I'm pretty sure the tires were always spinning. He pulled a 3rd place finish.

dReWpY 03-22-2010 03:53 PM

im talking to some of the ppl on the local board that puts on the event and it seems to be alot of fun, the vids look like a blast with 50-60 cars showing up regularly, as long as i can afford tires, but alas such is the problems of HP sports

my main goal for the first run... not getting lost in the cones

Kerry_129 03-22-2010 04:02 PM

I ran one a long time ago in my Saleen Mustang - TON of fun!

I'd consider doing them occasionally in my 300ZXtt, once I 'freshen up' the motor/turbos. But I don't want to thrash the shit out of it too badly - and if you run hard, you WILL abuse the hell outta your car. I think doing them on a regular basis would pretty much require a dedicated toy.

Homeslice 03-22-2010 06:14 PM

It really only abuses the brakes and the tires.

Clutch.....Not so much. You don't shift as often as you think you might.

dReWpY 03-22-2010 06:16 PM

the only thing im worried about is the start, i dont want to fuck up the 5 speed transmission, its my weak point, the car was built and setup for autocross

Homeslice 03-22-2010 06:21 PM

The start at a Solo II is usually built around a turn, so it's not going to be like an all-out launch.

Sean 03-23-2010 12:37 PM

Auto-Xed for years. It's pointless--you can get a real trackday with 30x as much track time for ~twice the price. And you don't have to stand out in a field picking up cones for half the day.

RACER X 03-24-2010 09:41 AM

yeah, did them for a couple of years

MIATA!

Mini guy will do it only if he's home but he's leaving for 4 and a half weeks ish on april 4th, and he has work to do like tires and such.

He was telling me they cover insurance? How does that work?
