Guess where this Big UGLY Mother came from.
Don't think I need to say much.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...iketire010.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...iketire013.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...iketire009.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...iketire005.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...iketire004.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...iketire001.jpg Craziest part is, it's still holding air. I need a good tire gauge (and a wash, chain lube, and adjustment) before I ride it again, but I think the belts deflected the nail without letting it actually puncture. I couldn't get the licorice stick repair down through the path of the nail, but there's no hissing. I still plan to get new tires as soon as I can afford to, and before any long/fast rides. But at least I don't have to go out and buy cheap shit tires RIGHT NOW. |
I wouldn't ride on it
|
Eff THAT
|
Just throw some 2 part epoxy on it and it will be fine
|
Swap that bugger out, I have some track takeoffs if need be for now.
|
Thru the side wall!! Not even my cheap ass would ride that!!!
|
Oh no not this debate again...:panic: OMG what is the worst case scenario here? He'll get a flat. That's it, there will be no sudden tire failures or what not. He is right, the belts obviously deflected the nail and it never pierced anything but the tread that gets worn off anyway. See if you can get some rubber cement in there just for the heck of it and ride on.:rockwoot:
|
It's only through the rubber. Those angles don't show it, but where it came out the side is the same depth as the tread grooves. It did not penetrate any of the belts. I wouldn't do a long trip on it, or ride interstate, but I think it will be okay riding six miles at less than 55mph. Until I get a good tire gauge to track the pressure, I'm driving the truck to work. I should be able to get new tires with my next paycheck.
So where's a good place to get tires in Philly? I know there was a great internet deal on Pirelli Angels, but I don't want to save $50 by buying online only to spend $100 to have them mounted. |
i would have left it.
|
jakewilson.com look the the multiple threads here, they are cheap as shit now
|
Yeowtch.

Plug it you panzy.

Anywhere you buy tires here you will spend $$$ mounting them. I have gotten in the habit of taking both wheels off and dropping them off at the local shop, and $40 and an afternoon later they are mounted. if you take the wheels off the bike yourself it is cheaper than if you have them do it. I've been using Mount Holley Powersport on rt38 in NJ. The last 2 times I had them change tires they did both wheels in under 30 minutes over my lunch break |
Look on craigslist. A bunch of people buy mounting equipment and will usually do it for you for a lot less money or a case of beer.

Man I need to get the tire machine. Could bolt it right to the lift when needed and into rafter when not. Hmmmm. I will need a new rear this year. AL, post up the links again. I may hv to get ordering.
|
You don't want to use the HF tire changer right out of the box. Let me find the website where a guy added non-scratching stuff to his.
Well crap. I think I found the link, but most of the pics are gone. The guy just bought some of the pastic type cutting boards and made pieces to fit on the tire changer anywhere it would touch the rim. You put pieces on the rim holders and a flat piece down on the bead breaker. *edit* Found it cause I'm awesome. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=273223 |

Getting just about any changer is a good idea - but getting a No-Mar bar to use with it is a better idea. They're the best and won't fuck up your rims...
|
I will be getting me this when I'm do for a tire change. Last time with me bringing the wheels and tires in, the cheapest was $60 and it didn't take them more than 10 minutes to do it. Now with two bikes that's $120 I can spend on a new tire.
I love you tigger. |

I'll take you up on that offer, but have to wait till closer to next payday (the 10th) to order. Jake Wilson has free shipping and $220 for the set. |

http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.a...sku=GRNUVI885T It was $249 I swear but at $267 with free shipping, close. |

Maybe you should throw a tire away every time it gets dirty, runs over a rock, etc as well... who knows? Why take the chance? I mean now you've really gone off the deep end in tire paranoia. The tire was never punctured. Have you never run a tire down to the threads? Did it suddenly explode as soon as you touched them with the road? Seriously guys, I've had people on this board caution me against tire explosions if the pressure is 2 lbs higher than they "think" it should be. Now if the outer tread is at all damaged, you'll run the risk of a catastrophic failure!!! I am SO glad that tires aren't as fragile as some of you believe! Get on YouTube and watch a video on how tires are made. You may learn something and may even be able to put aside some of your fears... Besides, "Mr Awesome", he's not scrapping his pegs through the Gap on a super sport machine, he's riding his Ninja 650 back and forth to work. Yeesh! |

Yeah I found it... but wasn't sure if that was the same thing you were talking about.
So you bought this http://www.harborfreight.com/motorcy...ent-42927.html Then did the little plastic piece mods to it. Which bar are you running? |

Tigger. You're Mr. Awesome you sexy beast you. I always say that tires are over priced. Are they? I mean with them being mostly synthetic material and a lot less rubber than they used to be (saw it on a WWII history show so I'm now a tire expert by the way), you'd think they would be cheaper.
|
But tt is the part right lon? Only $60?
I think bolting it to the lift will work great. Then I can have it at either ground level or raised up. Of coarse will need to position it so u can use it and still have a bike on the lift. Ya know the one missing a rim or two. |

Supposed to be made by no-mar, but cheaper. Like the "economy" version of a no-mar. http://www.cyclehill-tirechanger-sec...ults.asp?Cat=1 I'm trying to decide what I want to do, since the Jap dealers won't touch buell rims, and the buell dealer is 90 miles away, it's a 3 day turn around if they pick up and deliver... |

Tire Changer $49 Motorcycle kit $59 Balancer $59 Tire Iron $6 Rim Savers $15 Mojo Blocks $30 I got 20% off the HF stuff, so I have maybe $200 total involved on everything. Well worth it and I have zero scratches. |
So you do need both the top (tire changer) and the bottom (bead breaker).

Post a pic of your setup again

The first pic in post#46 is my exact set up or if you go to the thread, there are pics of my set up and bar mods... yeesh , Chris. ;)

i'm going thursday to look at them at HF

I went and looked at it... but I'm seriously debating this towards the negative. $120 basically OTD. At $30 a tire to swap them out at the little shop with no balenceing which isn't an issue cause I use beads ($45 at HD with balence). That is 4 tire changes I need to break even. Not including I need to modify the unit to use it, and store teh 75# beast somewhere.
So 4 tire changes... 18months riding change rear $30 18months riding change front & rear $60 18months riding change rear $30 =$120 & almost 5 yrs to break even. Could shorten it by charging buds to do it. (I usually only do 1 maybe 2 a year). Plus the "what if" I scratch up a rim or something stupid. IDK... |
Yea maybe not for you then... in 18 months I've done at least two fronts and three to five rears... they want $30 per tire here off the bike so easy math for me. Oh and don't forget to bring the 20% off coupons...
|
I cant' find a 20% off coupon.
Plus the bottom was already 17% ($10) off. down to $50 Yeah I don't change tires often... but hell why are you? |
They will usually stack coupons. You can google a 20% coupon. It wont scan but if the person is cool theyll take it.

Got 3k on my corsa III's I've got almost 4k on my PP's, should get 4500-5k. Thinking I'm going road 2's next, I can't afford all the tires! So Gas... in your infinite wrenching wisdom. For a guy changing rubber enough to make purchasing a changer worth while, what the HF rig quality enough or no? |
Well its hf. Tt shud be nuff said on quality. It will do the trick but its not a "no mar". The metal rim clamps, metal bead brake are all obviously needed mods. But that has been stated already.
My biggest issue. Its rather large and heavy (~75#). and unlike my sportbike friends here. I have 11k on my rear tire now. I fully expect to do another k or 2 on it. Not bald yet, gettin close though. So do the math for me. I just don't think its worth it. Even if I understand what ur all saying on finding the 20% off coupon. Plus as wifey said, look at a small price to keep up relations and biz with local shop. Going today to check with small local shop tt usually does my mounting. See what prices he has on a new rear with mounting. I will normally even pay slightly more to help the local guy. I 90% closed on not getting a changer. |
I can see it for chris no tneeding one that is. For me my no mar set up has already paid for itself, figure the track bike get tires swapped after 4 or 5 days now, plus owning 2 streetbikes and having a few friends in similar situations who like getting free tire changes and can watch me swear and throw stuff its all worth it

I've got a pile of the 20% coupons. I'll mail you one if you want. |
Don't worry about it Marko... thanks anyway!!
I need a new rear tire. That has been stated and why I was looking into it. But I found a much BETTER alternative. Thank you God for HD. I did some homework before hand... nearly every site online doesn't carry my replacement size in the HD Dunlop D407 series. I want to stick with OE because there is no benifit to switching. From what I have read the other alternatives offer no added milage or added grip (not that I've ever had a problem, my dunlops do great in rain clear up to 90mph). They are such a slight difference in price it's not worth it. A small shop near my house can get my HD tire for $210 instead of dealer $241. However... I checked with the dealer on the HD Wheel & Tire Warrenty program. 3yrs = $400 4yrs= $450 5yrs= $500 Covers all labor (read: wheels on bike), only replace with HD OE tires, no worries about out dated tires, and good at ANY HD dealer (HD program). It covers any nails, blow outs, pot holes, etc. Covers both rims and tires. You have to have 3/32 of tread for replacement. So I guess I have bad luck with nails every 6,000-8,000 miles... At $300 (wheel off the bike) per rear wheel it won't take long to get my money back. That is for sure. The only catch, with a used bike. You have to purchase 1 new HD tire (since mine is bald that works for me) to get warrenty. So... http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...AwOTMuanBn.jpg The last tire I'll ever buy for my Ultra will be on this Sat. PS: Took me a whole 20 mins to drop that wheel off the bike. |
Bam a lam
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...AwOTUuanBn.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...AwOTYuanBn.jpg More info on the protection. No deductable No max # of replacements Reimbursement for and up to Rental $500 Towing $150 Lodging & Meal $300 Simply awesome. |
