Ordered an onboard camera system
After doing a bunch of research I ordered an onboard camera system. Since I'll be doing at least 3 track days (one of which is like 1200 miles away) and 5 days around the gap, at this point it seems to make a lot of sense to get some footage.
I haven't considered the really nice units (like this: ) because they are way out of my price range. Before I was considering the cheaper units like the tony hawk POS cam, the oregon scientific yct2k came or whatever it's called (gets interference from bike's electronics according to several sources), and a few others. I decided they wouldn't be the best choice. I settled on this setup being offered by a great guy on the wera boards with a slight discount for being from that forum: Onboard bullet cam kit I like the fact that it's modular giving you tons of mounting options, the lens itself is tiny so there are tons of mounting options there too. Some people have hardwired to the bike battery with a switch instead of using AA batteries, also. http://www.cedigital.com/xcart/image...em_01__-01.jpg I've seen some raw footage coming out of this setup and the quality is head and shoulders above the cheaper units. It will show up friday and I will be rigging it up over the weekend along with packing and prepping for TDs and my trip. I'll get tons of footage in the next two weeks, methinks ;) |
Nice. Can't wait to see the footage.

From what I've seen the quality will be great. When I get into it this weekend and decide how I want to install it on the bike we'll see how that goes. I might dream up some interesting mounting locations ;) |
i think ill buy one....

I'll just keep a handful of 1 gig cards on hand, and they can be dumped to a laptop in the garage between sessions (or at the lodge at night for the gap) if need be. Also, the cost of storage space is offset by the increased quality... Quote:
I'm going to try to attach the whole rig such that it's fairly easy to remove. That way I could toss it on someone else's bike if need be, and maybe even get someone to get some follow-footage of me with it. |
i just feel bad for trip, R^2 is the only one that can keep up on his faster pace runs

Regardless I don't want to crash before Jennings I don't mind chilling a bit on the public roads. And wasn't trip saying we are going to have huge police issues? I hope we can get some good riding in... |
ya know, it was my experience last year that no matter how slow or fast I went, it was still thrilling as hell and by far one of the coolest things I have ever done. If ya want some footage of you, I will be happy to try and keep up with ya and do it with your camera...i wouldnt mind some footage of me either, to see how I have improved...
Trip, that doesnt mean footage of my rear in the rain however!! |

Hopefully we can all get some hooliganism footage of eachother. This weekend I'll brainstorm a way to mount it so it can be easily removed I hope. |

i know a guy who set up a mount on the frame slider bolt, it worked pretty good as far as I can recall but it was a completely different kind of camera. |
I think I'd like to mount it right in the front like in the picture above, but I might run the wire from it to the tail section. Back in the tail is supposedly the best place to mount the microphone, and it's easy to get to so I could put the recorder and the battery pack there as well.
Also, in the tail the recorder wouldn't distract me or be in the way like if I were to mount it up near the handlebars like I've seen some people do. |

i actually want a helmet mounted cam. that way i'm not limited to only recording whats in front of me.

did it survive the carnage?
|
did you get video of the wreck?

Looks like the wire that goes to the lens got bit into a little bit by one of the zipties I had secured it with... but I think it will still be cool. I'll let ya'll know soon. Quote:
Basically the recorder's rechargeable battery didn't quite last the entire first day.... so the second day I planned to recharge it during lunch. But then I decided I was going to leave a couple sessions early to get organized for my big trip, so I didn't bother recharging it. It died in the middle of the session in which the accident occurred. I'm fuckin' mad about it still. Would have been sick footage. |
