Bronco as bike hauler?
Can you haul a streetbike (or two) in the back of a gen 5 Ford Bronco? Always had a soft spot for these:

I'm assuming your mean with the top off?
If so, I don't see why not. :idk: I've always liked those too. |
Taking the top off isn't as big a fucking deal as people say.
I own a 74 K5 "full top" Blazer, and I used to take the roof off all of the time. It takes two strong adult men to do it properly, or a simple lift, but if you take care to separate the top carefully, and not tear the gasket, and care for the gasket and mating surfaces, there's no reason not to enjoy the convertible nature of these trucks. People are just pussies. |
Its too bad the rust fairies have eaten up all the bronco's around here. I wouldn't mind one.
|
Yer makin me miss my ramcharger.
|
With top off and back seats down, yes. Hard part will be tie down points.
Friend used to haul his 4wheeler in one on occasion. |

Not sure, we just folded them down and put the front wheels on the seat backs. Never worried about tying it down either.
|
I'll be tying down the 675...
I was just thinking, rather than buy a new(ish) truck and taking the depreciation hit, why not buy something older, fix it up, and have something unique? Plus it's small enough to park but big enough to tow a car. I'm thinking parking it with the back part off in a hotel parking lot the night before a trackday will just result in two stolen vehicles though. Hm. |
If it can haul a murderer, it can haul a bike.

Why no trailer? It does not matter how well you protect anything, if someone wants it bad enough, it will be stolen. $600 military...work it son!http://www.100dollarman.com/trailer.html

El Camino doesn't have the offroad ability I need nor the towing ability. Need a truck. |

I can get you a tube framed, flamed hearse on 44s for I believe $7000. Will provide pics if needed.
|
Meh, you can get an old hearse for about a G, and an old Blazer for half that...some assembly req.
Besides, I've done the whole monster truck thing. My old daily driver: http://poopnugget.com/files/truck.jpg |

Badass Avatard Love the old skool Blazers. |
Thanks, man. I still have it. It's rusting peacefully in the back yard. I still dream of resurrecting it, but NJ outlawed anything bigger than a 38" tire, and I'm not putting fucking caster wheels on my shit, fuck that.
Full top, fullsize...the world's most badass "jeep" thang. Shame that '75 was the last year (mine's a '74). Full top is the shit. I miss my truck. I used to drive it everywhere, even NYC. Ever seen a NY cabbie wave you on? You'd be shocked how fucking courteous they really can be... :lmao: |
Move to Texas and you can do whatever the fuck you wanna do to it.

Soooooooo....anyone haul a motorcycle in a Bronco? Is it securable with the back off?
|

Short of having a vinyl top made, the truck will not be securable. Even with a vinyl top in place it still isn't "safe." However, neither is a Jeep or a convertible. Heck, any truck is only a piece of glass away from being stolen. If thieves want your rig, they are going to get it, period. Minimize your risk with insurance, a car alarm with ignition kill and parking in a well lit spot at a decent hotel (with security if possible). When leaving the truck unattanded, don't leave anything inside that will attract attention (wallet, GPS, phones, iPods, etc.). In short, I'd do it. |
A standard pickup is lockable. Vegas has a car theft problem and I'll be doing some overnights there and in Pahrump for trackdays. And I'll have all my gear. I guess a Club is in order. LOL
Mostly I like the idea of fixing up an older vehicle rather than buying new right now. |

How do you carry your gear? I have one of those huge rubbermaid bins that fits everything I wear plus spare boots, gloves, helmet and shields and tire warmers. It is easy enough to grab and take that into the hotel at night. |

Hey Sean...Everywhere with cars, has a car theft problem. |

Those things are great. Can stand on the bed tops, drop down rear door and windshield.

Hell, that alone is reason enough to keep the Av. |
Wait, you have the same bike as me, the same truck as me, and the same name as me? WTF this is creepy
Broncos are pretty cheap, I think I might pick one up and try it out. If it doesn't work I'm only out a few bucks in tax. |

I meant for you to keep it. I'd love to have one and use it as you do but there is no way I'm sleeping under the stars in the FL humidity. |
An El Camino would be a LOT easier to get a bike up into the back. Low to the ground so you'd just need two aluminum ramps or hopefully not, two boards.
So I'll go with either the El Camino or the Ranchero. |

The el camino wud be schweet.

I never really looked at it, but it was tube over 1 ton Chevy framerails...SOLD.

Snag a 2002 avalanche, loaded, 4x4 for around $10,000. Perfect.

You started this thread to ask if the bikes could be hauled "in" a vehicle. You never said anything about a trailer or desert. |

As for using the Bronco, it's definitely possible if you can live with the issues you've already covered. I had the same issues when I carried everything in the bed of my truck before I started towing a small building to all the track days: 1. Security. As you mentioned already i't's not just the Bronco and bike, it's all the heavy stuff you don't want to bring into the hotel like your tools, air comp., etc. No sense unloading at a hotel only to start reloading again at about 5am to get to the track by 6:30. 2. Protection from the elements (probably not as big a concern in Cali, but rain is always a threat in NC summers) 3. Peace of mind. I sleep noticeably better knowing my stuff is locked up and secure and no longer have to beg the hotels to let me park under the covered loading/unloading areas. If you can get around that stuff and make your peace with the risks, it would be a sweet way to get to and from the track. |

I dont get why you are lookin for a different vehicle? It would be harder to load a bike into a Bronco unless you chop it up and dump it to the weeds, thus losing the ability to take it to the desert. You would have to take the top off, losing security and if you already have a truck it would be the same as wasting parking space with a trailer. No matter what you buy, someone can break in and take or vandalize your stuff so saying its more secure is just a pipe dream(I had my shit busted up on my porch). Why not get a cap for the 'Lanche? A Jeep Scrambler with a full hard top? Or if you need to buy something, look at a used Centurian Conversion Bronco...A Bronco on a F250 chassis lengthened and 4 wheel drive. Buy an old Suburban and hack the back off and put a Blazer 'glass top on it, but the same problem is always gonna be height(not easy to load) and security. You say you need a change, but dont want to buy new because of the depreciation...any old truck you buy and fix is never gonna get the money back either. Use the money you were gonna spend on a different vehicle and update/upgrade the Avalanche, redo the interior and paint it, make it something different.

If its for a dirt bike, what about a hitch mounted bike carrier? Add that to any 4wd that can habdle the class hitch needed for the bike and your set.

Those aren't exclusive to dirtbikes. You can use a hitch carrier for the 675, and keep all the gear and tools in the Bronco with the top on. |
I had a Moto-Tote for a while and I never trusted the thing. I hit some bumps when I exited the freeway and the thing would just go flying around.

How hard is it to get into the desert riding spot. I know you don't want a trailer but what about one of those folding trailers? James |
