Time for a new SUV, what to get?
The lease is up on my 2007 Acadia and it's time to replace it. Right now I'm between an Expedition and a Tahoe/Yukon. I'm looking for feedback on reliability on either of these.
I know the ford 5.4L had had some serious issues with spark plugs breaking off in the cylinder head when trying to remove and the exhaust manifolds are prone to cracking. The Tahoe/Yukon have had issues with the 4WD transfer module. Any other issues I should be aware of? I'm towing a boat so this is why I need a big SUV. I'm also buying a couple years old because I want to get out of the lease cycle. It would be nice to be car payment free in a few years. |

If you are looking at a 5.4 , makes sure that (older than 04), that it had the cyclinder heads replaced by ford or had the insert. I think they addressed the headgasket in later models. Tahoe/Yukon - Make sure that it had tranny service as per maintenance schedule. Otherwise, should be reliable but trim likes to take a hike and they have been known for electrical gremlins. |

Who cares if you're gonna lease it. You won't own it if it breaks, you'll just turn it in, and it'll still be under factory warranty
|
He said he's trying to get away from leasing things.

Toyota saquio(sp?)
|
Expedition also needs a look at the rear trailing arms. They rot out.
Ask me how I know  Probably gonna need to cut the bolt out on the driver's side too, get a new bolt, and reinsert from the other side (hits the frame otherwise) in order to even replace them. |
I am a die hard Ford guy, but if you are set on a SUV for towing a decent size boat, go Yukon. I'm just not a fan overall of the Ford SUV's. Now F-150 vs Silverado, Ford all the way.
|
I have a 90' Suburban 2500 4x4 that I will never part with. That truck is a fucking gorilla. I haven't found anything it doesn't tow comfortably and it's a piece of cake to work on. Me and Tommymac set a world record for an alternator change last year at the rally at a total cost of about $60...

All cars are now made from parts from all over the globe.
That sentiment isn't just stupid, it's pointless. |

Sorry, did that laugh come out? |
Yukon, but I would get a 4door full size truck. Make sure you get the 5.3L with DOD.
I can look up any GM bulletins back to 1996. Let me know if you need any research. |

Dude, I'm sorry to hear about your family and friends, and that's not just talk, I mean it...but those to blame aren't "over there"...they're HERE...and most work in banking, and government. Half of Bush's fucking cabinet used to work at Goldman Sachs.
These are the folks to blame, not others, in other countries, who are doing nothing more than trying to provide for themselves, and their own. The reason we aren't at the top of our game is multifaceted, but until we start educating our own, and caring for the health of our own, those who can and do will simply live better, work better, and produce better goods...and will continue to eat our lunch. |
Oh yeah it's multi leveled. But the day we no longer produce anything for ourselves will be a sad day. We will be dependant on other countries for our survival and crutch of products. I blame the govt mostly. Expenses to build in other countries is cheaper than here, simply because we live better than most countries. That means wages cost more, and let's not even get into medical. Problem is the import taxing... it's not a level playing field. But I'm not trying to debate politics.
Listen... it's simple. I keep a chevy and a ford in my driveway. Why? I have family that work there. It keeps them in jobs and roof over their heads. How would I be able to face my family rolling up in a Honda or Toyota? I might as well take the spoon from them. Now I'm not an idiot. If you are in shitville or other similar state with foreign brand factories and you have family that works for Toyota or Honda. I will not hold anything against them for purchasing what keeps them employeed. I have a buddy that works for Toyota/Lexas and drives one. I understand. Further, I have friends that have foreign cars. You won't hear me knock a Honda car. They make good stuff and I think are above the other foreign cars. But you won't see me own one. |

lol- i get your mentality tho, makes sense. i shop with ppl i want to help whenever possible. |
LOL... don't have family in HD. Besides I was young and stupid back then.

As soon as a US car maker doesn't produce shit I'll go back to them. There really aren't anything styling or the same build quality as a foreign car. I remember driving a nearly new dodge durango and every button and lever in the car felt like complete junk. I REALLY would like to do buy a US car, as soon as they catch up. Maybe this collapse across the board will shake them up.

Nope 5.7. For a 6200 lb. truck it's actually pretty good. I've got 161k on it now and it still runs great and gets reasonably good mileage. (13ish on the interstate dragging a trailer.) I wish I drove it this year cause' you probably would understand why I hang on to it all these years... |

Oh yeah, Chrysler makes utter shit. Worst fucking cars in America, hands down.
It started with the K car, and it's been nearly all downhill from there. |

VW is a different segment. They know how to make some nice stuff.

no toyotas for me thanks. I agree about the Honda cars, they make some nice, I just can't make myself pay money for one. |
back to the original question. I have 130,000 trouble free miles on my '02 5.4 Ford. good maint goes a long way to keeping things going.
if it's a used anything you take a risk that the previous owner didn't do maint. I do like the Chevy as well. Stylewise I would lean towards the Chevy. Never really loved the expy although it's not bad by any means. Only trick I would mention would be if trying out the older Ford, push the little button to switch the trans into tow mode. two wires in the column have a tend to strip and not operate. Not a big deal but you want to know about it. mine is out right now, have to pull the cover off and solder them up. Ford's 4.6 is a completely useless motor. Don't buy one. Chevy's small V8 actually felt pretty good and had decent towing. Ergonomically I like Dodge but they don't seem to have anything with a good track record or towing cap. Although a boat you should be able to haul with any half ton. too many trans issues with dodges also. |

Bottom line. The parts that are outsourced are probably made to spec by the lowest bidder. This goes for all companies of anything. I will put my gm/ford against any meanufacture tit for tat. The american cars/trucks today are leaps not bounds better than many foriegns and maybe not all. |
Disclaimer - I'm from Michigan and I too have a few family members who retired from GM. I did buy my wife a Toyota (whatareyagonnado?), but I drive a Jeep. My next vehicle will also be another Jeep. I won't buy a foreign car for myself. Just because.
That said . . . I've got a friend in Ohio who used to work for a machine shop that made body panel molds for all of the manufacturers. He told me stories about how the different manufacturer's reps acted when they came to inspect molds. He said the reps from the Japanese companies (Honda, Toyota) came and brought laser mics and spent all their time going over every square inch of their molds to make sure they were exactly to spec. The Ford, GM, Chrysler reps would bring donuts, coffee, and sit around telling jokes the whole time they were supposed to be "inspecting" their molds. He said he saw it time and time again. Just sayin' . . . |
get a 4runner. :D
|
Going with the Expy, end of story. Bigger and more comfortable ride than a Tahoe/Yukon. The independent rear suspension offers a great feel for the road and the 365 ft/lbs of torque will tow my boat no problem.

Is there a noticeable difference between the Ford and the GM's? |
Quote:
I've heard that a solid rear axle provides better towing but the numbers show it makes no difference at least not much of one at all. |

If the current administration really wanted to bail out "Main Street", and the American worker, it would use stimulus funding to provide loans, and logistical assistance to workers who are willing to save their closing factories, take them over themselves, and band together, not as unions, but as cooperatives. Business that are owned by their employees are far more successful at everything, because everyone has a personal stake in the company. This needs to be this country's new direction, in this new global market. It's the American worker's only hope and salvation, IMHO. |

Done! Pic of the car to follow.
It's being held at the dealer until the end of the month when the lease is up on the Acadia. |

Plus I get new tires when needed at cost and scheduled maintenance is free for 3 years. My neighbor owns the dealership I bought it from, Sharpe BMW. |
