Hello Winter: wrench to bike - Ultra Edition

Well it's been a month since I put the bikes up. They got a good bath, wax, and oil change.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service009.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service016.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service022.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service033.jpg

I have some mods planned for both the bikes.

Nightster Edition here

On the docket for the Ultra

Saddlebag latch inserts
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service006.jpg

cause I hate reflectors
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service002.jpg

Pop them off
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service023.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service024.jpg

Clean the latch up
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service027.jpg

Stick on the billet inserts
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service028.jpg

Much nicer
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service029.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service030.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Service031.jpg

Also added this nice tray in the saddlebag. Will be nice for my sunglasses, camera, whatever I don't want rattling around in the bag.

Gas Man 01-12-2011 08:55 PM

Maintenance items: (both really easy)
Front brake pad replacement (2 bolts & 1 pin per caliper)
Front fork oil replacement (drain plug R&R, remove dash piece to fill)

Gloss black powder:
saddlebag surrounds
horn cover
tank dash
air cleaner cover
starter cover
rear fender struts
license plate brackets

Flat black high temp powder (the powder will be more durable than ceramic, flat cause gloss will loose its shine over time & miles):
heat shields
mufflers

ceramic (gray-color doesn't matter) the exhaust pipes for an added heat barrier

This has always been the only read cosmetic mods I ever thought of for the last 2 years of ownership. Always said I might do this one day...

So I started into the bike...

All of this chrome needs to go (saddle bag surrounds, rear fender struts, plate bracket, mufflers)
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project006.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project007.jpg

Off with the parts
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project009.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project012.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project013.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project015.jpg

remove the horn cover
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project011.jpg

tank dash gone
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project014.jpg

exhaust heat shields and air cleaner cover off
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project016.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project017.jpg

Exhaust pipes off
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project018.jpg

After also doing the nightster I had allot of parts off... YIKES this is going to get expensive!

Not much to report on the Ultra.

The LED I bought from HD 2 years ago never was all that good.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ic/Mods055.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project037.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project038.jpg

So I bought 2 things to try from my friends at www.superbrightleds.com

This neat little thing that comes with all the different connectors.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project040.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project041.jpg

But it ended up just looking like this square group of LEDs.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project043.jpg

So I decided to go with the other option. A 360* high powered led jobber
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project039.jpg

So here's the HD
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project044.jpg

The superbright hotness
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project045.jpg

The superbright version lights the entire lens (regardless of the pic), where as the HD one is like little LED dots.

I picked up a bunch of powder which has gavin me a proper excited state. I just need to find time to mount it up.

Gas Man 02-09-2011 11:38 PM

This really should have been posted last week, but was busy with my buds wedding and doing best man stuff for that. But...

Got some stuff back from powder.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project078.jpg

Detail cleaned that stuff, and light wax job on it.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project081.jpg

New air cleaner ring installed on the cover
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project079.jpg

Installed and even with the chrome center nut it keeps the mix of chrome/black
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project082.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project083.jpg

Starter cover done black. Never understood why they chromed (to bring attention to it) such a pointless cover.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project086.jpg

Put the center back in the tank dash. This is going to be a great chrome/black highlight piece as you'll see.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project080.jpg

Chrome gas cap cover with the black willie g skull... I think it looks great.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project090.jpg

Plus the black right against the black pearl (gray) paint.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project091.jpg

Waiting on some key parts to get the saddle bags back on and the ceramic stuff done on the pipes. Stay tuned...

derf 02-10-2011 12:14 AM

I hope I never ride near enough to you to be blinded by the sun reflecting off your bike

Gas Man 02-10-2011 12:46 AM

But I'm getting rid of chrome... so that should make it better.

Lookin good Gas

marko138 02-10-2011 03:28 PM

Looks great...but Fred's edit of your quote made me

Gas Man 02-17-2011 08:35 PM

Got the horn done... here's the pieces
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project104.jpg

And it does like I have been trying to do... disappearing act
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project106.jpg

Can't put the saddlebags back together, cause one of the tubes had to be re-done... but got the fenderstruts and trunk detach kit pieces done.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project108.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project109.jpg

Keeping with the blend of black & chrome... the plate frame is still chrome with black print
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...roject110a.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...roject113a.jpg

Gas Man 02-24-2011 07:36 PM

Finally have all the pieces to put the saddlebag surrounds back on.

Tap out the threaded holes so they are clean
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project117.jpg

Get it together
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project114.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project115.jpg

Got two of each of these shots below (with & without flash) neither is exactly how it looks in person.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project118.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project119.jpg

With the saddle bag
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project120.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project121.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project130.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project131.jpg

Duplicate on other side
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project124.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project126.jpg

I love it...

This exhaust bracket was bare metal from HD, and you could see it. I fixed that, high temp powder and a new chrome bolt to replace the rusted old one.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project129.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project128.jpg

Then I borrowed a 1 3/8" wrench from a tech at work... to remove the fork caps. Then remove the drain plugs and let the forks drain.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project133.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project132.jpg

Should pick up the ceramic this weekend so I can get the exhaust back on. Got all the high temp powder sitting in the basement just waiting.

Gas Man 02-27-2011 08:37 PM

So I let the fork oil drain for a couple days

Installed to torque spec the new drain plugs
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project134.jpg

Measure out spec amount of fluid
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project136.jpg

Funnel to the top of the fork & pour in
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project135.jpg

With 15,500 miles on my Ultra, the dealership mechanic was surprised I was on the original brake pads. He said, most people only get 10k out of them. I figure my amount of miles is due to my road trips on the highway.

I'm always amazed by how little pad material is actually on new pads. But they are suppose to be 4.5mm or bigger. Mine were 1.8 - 2.9mm.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project137.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project140.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project146.jpg

It's always a nice feeling to get some good preventative maintenance done to the bike. All that is left to do is get & hang exhaust.

Gas Man 03-06-2011 08:35 PM

Well I had everything but the exhaust on the bike and it kept bugging me that the front still looked stock. So I tore the front light dept all apart and removed some pieces for gloss black powder.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project147.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project148.jpg

Picked up the ceramic exhausts... love the way ceramic looks, hate how easy it is to scratch. But love even more how well it absorbs/controls heat. Did the Ultra pipes in a flat black, because it will hide better behind the high temp powdered heat shields and big reason is to control the heat.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project150.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project151.jpg

Put on the flanges and re-installed the O2 sensors
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project166.jpg

Mounted the exhaust (did with and without flash pics here, it looks like a mix of them in person, damn flash vs garage lighting)
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project167.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project168.jpg

Left side muffler and heat shield
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project171.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project172.jpg

Re-installed the high temp powdered heat shields
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project173.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project174.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project175.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project176.jpg

And of coarse the right side muffler
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project177.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project178.jpg

Gas Man 03-06-2011 08:35 PM

With the saddle bags back on
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project182.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project183.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project184.jpg

A view from the back
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project189.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project188.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project186.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project187.jpg

Will pick up the front fairing bib, and light bar Monday. The 3 light rings, "out-gassed" real bad when heated for powdering, so my powder guy , is going to get a primer that controls out gassing and re-powder them again. He won't settle for anything but perfect, which is why we get along so well.

After that, I'm done with the Ultra and therefor all the winter time bike projects.

marko138 03-07-2011 09:17 AM

Sinister.

shmike 03-07-2011 11:00 AM

Gas,

When you roll the bike out for it's first ride of the season do me a favor:

Take a pic of the entire bike as it is now (front and profile preferred) and post them up with the same (or similar) pics from when it was new.

You've done so much and so many of the pics are up close I want to see a whole bike side by side before and after. :dthumb:

Will do! I know these are up close shots... but I'm all crammed up in the garage...

But yes the list seems to be growing...

I also no longer have the lower fairings, and engine bar on the bike... the bar has to get blacked... its the missing piece to tie it all in.

Gas Man 04-02-2011 01:13 AM

Well I got to looking at my overall appearance of the bike as stated earlier... The front end still looked completely stock and didn't show the efforts I put into the fairing backwards on the bike. Again, I'm a perfectionist so I had to do something... well a few weeks ago I got the front end parts back.

Got the "fork bib" back
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project190.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project190.jpg

Installed
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project193.jpg

The light bar
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project195.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project196.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project198.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project199.jpg

Get the blinkers and aux lights re-installed and the aux lights adjusted
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project205.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project208.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project201.jpg

I like how the parts aren't chrome over the black inner fairing anymore
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project210.jpg

Got the rings back from powder.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project213.jpg

Installed
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project218.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project219.jpg

I like the black/chrome look carried here.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project220.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project221.jpg

Gas Man 04-02-2011 01:13 AM

But then after I had already dismissed the engine/roll bar many times... a few buds commented about it... which was all it took to send me over the edge of my powder crazy....

Remove
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project211.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project212.jpg

Back in gloss black awesome...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project214.jpg

Installed
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project222.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project223.jpg

Fiarings put back on with highway pegs. Again a black/chrome combo
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project224.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project225.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Project229.jpg

OK, now I'm done. I promise. Will get full bike pics when weather breaks again!

WHEW....

marko138 04-02-2011 01:17 PM

Looking good. You spend too much $$$ on this bike.

Gas Man 04-03-2011 02:24 AM

Not really. The whole cost on my bike is for this project was like $500-550. Less than what most spend on pipes, and a fraction of what cave spent on his this "mod season".

I've spent $0.00.

But you and uma are in a contest to see who can ride less. Lol

That made me laugh out loud...intially because it's a nice shot....but then thinking about Uma giving you a bitch slap to the back of the head if/when she reads this.

Gas Man 04-05-2011 11:45 PM

Not to burst ur laughing bubble but I've said it before to one of my bike night riding buds.
