Ebbs Down

Got a text yesterday:

Quote:

I went down. Clutch slipped. Bike is fucked. Case cover is shattered. On 41 just south of Lol IL.
He said he had to rent a truck (because rental cars don't do one way rentals). He threw the bike in the truck and is still on his way home.

z06boy 09-18-2008 11:40 AM

Well that sux. Glad he's ok though.

Rider 09-18-2008 11:45 AM

Oh shit.... That sucks. Glad he's ok though.

neebelung 09-18-2008 11:47 AM

Oh crap!! :( Glad he's alright!

Rider 09-18-2008 11:49 AM

Sounds like he was just south of Chicago. I'm only 2 1/2 hours from there. I could have helped him out.

Katherine 09-18-2008 11:51 AM

He said a really nice guy that saw it happen stopped to help him. The guy even gave him a ride to the rental place. I'm glad there are still good people out there.

Oh and the guy rides, so, of course, Ebbs hands him a card.

the chi 09-18-2008 12:25 PM

my darn phone had died and I coudnt get to his messages, he finally managed to get that front wheel off the ground :panic:...he is okay tho, went to the ER last night, has a bad sprain but fortunately thats it!

dReWpY 09-18-2008 12:26 PM

who did ebbs go down on?

the chi 09-18-2008 12:29 PM

LMAO! Perv...are you trying to hide your gayness babe?

dReWpY 09-18-2008 12:31 PM

:idk: just wondering if he was coming out of the closet to join trock

smileyman 09-18-2008 12:38 PM

Damn! Well chalk up one hell of an experience for the Ebbster. He saw alittle of everything motorcycling has to offer on his epic journey. Now he has to do the walk of shame and earn his newbie wings in bike repair 101.
CHin up laddie, it happens to us all, at least those of us fortunate and daring enough to risk all in the pursuit of our 2 wheeled Fix:twfix:

PiZdETS 09-18-2008 12:47 PM

Damn that sucks, good to hear he's safe. Time to upgrade when he gets back from Korea.

True you are Smileyman,

Sorry that trip had to end on a sour note man. Please yourself with some upgrades! It always makes me feel better, and gives you extra incentive to keep it upright next time.

NONE_too_SOFT 09-18-2008 01:15 PM

just talked to him. apparently he only had a fingertip grip on the clutch at a start, and just looped the damn thing. what a squid. He's okay cept for a possibly sprained ankle.

what, is he tired from riding 5000 fricken miles or something?

fnfalman 09-18-2008 01:43 PM

I hope that the hot chick that he popped the wheelie for was worth it.

smileyman 09-18-2008 02:06 PM

Finger tip flip. Nythe! I start out trips clutching with just 2, but at the end of 3-400 miles I am using my whole hand and arm like a hook...Got to find some exercise to strenghten my wrists...Hmmm.

you're one to talk wheelie squid. You seem to think it's cool and get this huge grin when you take it up about the 6 inches that you acutally get it off the ground.

dReWpY 09-18-2008 02:10 PM

dont be hating....

... and i know i should not be doing wheelies

psychochild28 09-18-2008 02:17 PM

Glad to hear ebbs is ok though. :dthumb:

sucks about the bike though

Captain Morgan 09-18-2008 02:34 PM

Damn, that sucks! Glad he's okay. At least he can save some money while in Korea these last 5 months and spend it on fixing the bike, or getting a new one when he returns.

marko138 09-18-2008 02:51 PM

What...The...Fuck.

Trip 09-18-2008 02:54 PM

damn, after all those technical roads I took him on, he loops it. damn squid

glad you are ok man.

Mr Lefty 09-18-2008 03:12 PM

Hey all... yeah... I'm a royal douche bag... fluck'n looped a 600... :lmao:

As NtS said... I was leaving the light and got on it a bit aggressively... but only had the tips of my index and middle fingers on the clutch... and it slipped... causing me to roll into the throttle more... I got a good view of the sky... then was on my side... got up thinking... wow... I looked like a royal ass.

Got up and noticed liquid everywhere.... first thought was fuel... nope... OIL... fuck'n case cover broke... frame sliders did their job and protected everything else... but they bent themselves.

not sure what happened to my ankle... thought at first the peg landed on it... and it was broken... but I could move it up and down and put a little weight on it so I said no to the Ambulance and the ER... and went and rented a truck...

a Really nice guy stopped and moved my bike out of the intersection then off to the side of the road. and then drove me down to get a rental... he said he used to ride sport bikes and now has a custom... gave him a card... hope he joins up... I can't for the life of me remember his name... I feel like a fuck'n douche (i'm fuck'n HORRIBLE with names)

$850 later... I was in a budget rental van going back to load up my bike.

I drove up to Kenosha and stopped for some food... when I got out... I literally fell out of the truck... my lower leg hurt so fucking bad. so I limped in and got my food... called Tricare (my military insurance co) and asked the lady at the register where the nearest ER was... (thought it was a little odd that she gave me PERFECT turn by turn directions... but an impressive oddity)

went into the ER... there was a gorgeous woman at the front named stephanie... talked to her for a bit... then actually told her why I was limping in like a damn war vet... the ER was packed so it took a LONG ass time to get in... and even longer for the x-rays to come back.

Severe sprain... but he couldn't see a break. though he said I need to go get it checked out in a couple days as he couldn't see clearly with all the swelling.

I got out of the ER at like 930 or so.... and stopped for the night at 2... at that point I'd been up for 20 hrs... and with the pain... couldn't go further... pulled into a rest stop slept for a bit (3 or 4 hrs) then drove to my parents in Fargo.

ok... I'll shut up now... and attach a pic

look closely at the case cover... it's cracked in like 10 places... and has a hole big enough to stick a couple fingers through....

I'll get better pics when I get the bike unloaded

Trip 09-18-2008 03:14 PM

bike doesn't look too bad from that pic, you can find a case cover on ebay for pretty cheap

Ooof. ER's suck. I was in there for like 5 hours when I crashed. Same deal...sprained ankle no breaky.

JoJoYZF 09-18-2008 03:16 PM

yeah I sent that text to Kat when I first wrecked... saw the oil... and over reacted...

insurance is gonna love me...

Rider 09-18-2008 03:18 PM

Yoshi makes case savers. Not sure if they are available for your bike but I'd check them out.

dReWpY 09-18-2008 03:22 PM

ones that have wrecked and once that are going to wreck

I'm always surprised to see how much IS NOT available for my bike as it's the old ZX6R :idk:

DLIT 09-18-2008 03:29 PM

I wouldn't even claim it. You have however many more months of not riding it in Korea, save your money up nd possibly buy the same or better shit.

smileyman 09-18-2008 03:32 PM

NCR makes hardened case covers, you know like the one you were eyeing on my bike...Mines CFM. Those damn magnesium ones bust too easy and I have always replaced them first thing if I thought the bike was going to the track.

Funny story though, saw a kid on a YZF600R loop out a wheelie one day and he came down so hard on his case it knocked the crankshaft out of its bearings...Totalled the bike.

Fortunately yours doesn't look that bad!

my deductible is $500... Case cover is gonna about that it self I think.... front fairing is slightly damaged... need a new frame slider..my fairings are already fucked from the tip over with my flat tire, and a gas can rubbing it when I hauled it down from AK. then there's my helmet, jacket, pants, boots, and gloves... all are covered...

Trip 09-18-2008 03:38 PM

If you think it is enough to total it. Definitely turn it in. You will get more for your bike than if you sell it and then you can buy that new one you want.

cover for my honda I have found for $60, they aren't that expensive. The woodcrafts are like $200 retail and thats the replaceable slider ones.

I would laugh my ass off if I saw that. I ride a yzf600r too and you have to really try to get the wheel up in the first place. Very hard to accidentally loop it unless doing wheelies.

well I'm gonna have them replace all the plastics... that'll be over 1000.... the case cover 200 for a stock one (guessing)... so not enough to total it... the rest is gear... $500 helmet... $200 jacket, $120 pants, $200 gloves, and $180 boots...

funny thing is... I wasn't worried about my gear as it all held up great... didn't even hit my head... but the insurance lady said if I'm already over the 500... claim all my gear.

Captain Morgan 09-18-2008 08:20 PM

I don't know that I would claim any of it. I'd buy a case cover and some frame sliders and call it good. But that's me.

Mr Lefty 09-18-2008 08:24 PM

looked again... frame is scratched near my rear sets... swing arm has a decent scratch... and the fairing stay is quite tweaked... I'll get better pics tomorrow... I'm fuck'n exhausted and I'm headed to bed

Good luck healin up and gettin her fixed up man. :dthumb:

brupska 09-18-2008 09:07 PM

Nice to hear you are ok. Your bike can be fixed. When you get back to Korea go to Seol and Hooker Hill there used to be a bar called the Hard Rock. They make a great Long Island Ice tea. LOL Good luck and hope to see you next year.

Gas Man 09-18-2008 09:33 PM

Glad you're ok Ebbs...

Not sure about AK laws... but in michigan, scratch on frame = totalled... so claiming it might not be a good idea.

itgirl 09-18-2008 09:38 PM

well, at least ebbs finally got some decent seat time on he bike before this happened. i guess if it were gonna happen, it's good it happened after all the festivities were over...at least he didn't miss out on that.

glad you're okay, ebbs.

Crazy 09-18-2008 10:26 PM

damn man, glad you're okay! I'm probably closer than anyone, where'd you go down?

not sure what I'm leaning towards really.... I do know I'm not getting anything bigger than a 600... I need a lot more seat time... and obviously they have more than enough power.

after seeing Trip's and Kat's RR's... those look pretty enticing too :idk: but this just delays my bike purchase... as I'll have to fix everything... I seriously doubt it'll be totaled...

marko138 09-19-2008 08:30 AM

600. It's all about power delivery, guy.

Mr Lefty 09-19-2008 08:33 AM

yeah... it is... but even before this... I was telling Trip, Rae and who ever was dumb enough to listen... that 600 had more than enough power for me right now... shit I barely have 8k on the bike now... and wanted to move up? yeah... maybe i did hit my head and knock something straight.

dReWpY 09-19-2008 09:16 AM

so with out saying that your clutch slipped or anything like that what really happend, was it a true looped and over she went?

Mr Lefty 09-19-2008 09:28 AM

well she went vertical... then slammed down on the left side. don't know just how far she rotated

I'd have a broken ankle for sure if I was wearing sneekers. some nasty rash on my knee and arm with out the pants and knee/shin guards and jacket. didn't see any mark on my helmet so don't think my head hit at all.

burnt a couple holes in the A* cargo pants... jacket held up well... don't think the gloves touched... and the boots... you really can't tell.

granted I only slid about 5-10'

Sandy snail trail FTL.

smileyman 09-19-2008 12:10 PM

You might wanna 'splain to the folks how many pounds of crap you had riding on the pillion. Sport bikes wheelie at will with a passenger on the back and I image all your electronics, clothes, and camping equipment were at least that heavy. Add popping the clutch and yeah you could go over quick.:sorry:

Get the bike naked and fixed enough to ride safely and practice up on your stunting, then you can pretty it up again after you have mastered the wheely!

OneSickPsycho 09-19-2008 12:11 PM

True... that and I'm geared down quite a bit... but in the end it was me a lack in concentration that was the problem...

Um geared down is an understatment..I know the 1 down/2 up formula is popular but that is a big difference from stock. I am running 15/45 on an original 15/43 bike and it is noticeable, so I am guessing your 14/45? That makes first gear like Stage One of a shuttle launch!
