Replacement Chain

Well, my stock chain has nearly 16,500 miles on it. It's starting to have tight and loose spots and making a small clunk on takeoff. IIRC, the swingarm sticker says 9k-19k miles, so it's due for replacement. So what's a good, reliable chain that will get at least the same mileage? The stock 520 is $145. I'll stick with 520 because the sprockets still look great (they are steel after all).

Did a quick kneedraggers search, and so far, I've found:
RK X-ring, 520, 120 link; $94
DID ER; $132
DID VM; $105
EK SRX X-ring; $65
Regina O-ring; $120
Regina X-ring $145
EK SS natural; $95

I don't need anything super light, and don't want fruity colors. Probably get the RK chain tool to make the job easier.

RK X-ring is what I have always used. Never owned any street bike long enough to need to change the chain, but on the dirt bikes RK was THE shit.

There is only one choice. DID Xring and Renthal sprockets.

Truth!!

Do the DiD ER

But be sure to do both sprockets!!!

And when you do put in your order. Buy an additional replacement link. Just in case you fuck up your first attempt.

Also, make sure you have the tool to put it together.

Consider getting an alignment tool, cause those marks on your swingarm are notoriously off.

AWESOME... they cut the chain to what ever size you need based on your sprocket choice... so you just need to put it together.

loved this setup

the gold chain looked good too

Gas Man 09-29-2008 05:45 PM

Well there ya go.

What sprockets are in there Ebbs?

Mr Lefty 09-29-2008 05:49 PM

AFAM or Drive Systems... I ended up with Drive Systems (cause of the ratio I went with)... and never had a problem... checked my chain when I was in Ohio... and after 6k they looked great... wished I'd taken more pics of my bike before I left for Korea...

Phenix_Rider 09-29-2008 10:39 PM

Found the stock chain info.
Standard Chain:
Make ENUMA – – –
Type EK520MVXL1 – – –
Link 114 links – – –

marko138 09-30-2008 09:28 AM

You really should replace the sprockets too. The old ones will chew that chain up prematurely.

Phenix_Rider 09-30-2008 11:04 AM

The stock sprockets look almost new. No hooking or shortening of the teeth. After I cleaned and lubed the chain last night, it's much smoother and quieter. Still going to replace soon. At the tightest point, it's in spec, but at the loosest it's nearly double. That's checking it where my manual says to (middle of bottom run)- I've heard several other ways that just sound dumb. Like pulling the chain off the rear of the sprocket. Supposedly it's good until you can see half a tooth under the chain.

Gas Man 09-30-2008 04:49 PM

Trust me... the stock sprockets, especially the rear, are worn.

yeah... and even if they aren't... your not going to get another 10-20k out of them... just won't happen.

just keep them all on the same replacement cycle and you have less to worry about :2cents:

Cutty72 09-30-2008 11:22 PM

what is this chain you speak of?

but yeah, i agree to change sprockets as well. I know I'm going to on comonboys SV next season sometime.

I wish I could get that kind of mileage out of a chain and sprockets.
