Touring Gear
To make life easier on the road, you gotta have the right tools, and you need to bring those tools along somehow, here is a list of some gear that i find useful while on the road, feel free to post your touring setup
http://www.tourmaster.com/images/pro...h_ra_black.jpg http://www.tourmaster.com/images/products/h_r1_red.jpg http://www.tourmaster.com/images/vistas/c_43_1_n_0.jpg and on the pig they dont get that hot even though they are closer then the 2 inch gap they suggest http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/drewpy636/2.jpg also a mulit tool is nice to have in case the unexpected happens, like a long line of decoys flies out of the boat about five cars ahead of you and gets wrapped up in your rear tire and belt http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/c...1?$main-Large$ spiderwebs aka cargo nets are also very useful to have, i think we have atleast three per bike cause they are always in the way unless you need them and then they are no where to be found http://www.hellrisercustoms.com/images/ds/DS110211.jpg |
I have the exact same Cortech saddle bags. They actually hold quite a lot of stuff. You can get a 12 pack of canned beer in each one.. Although I wouldn't recommend it just because of the weight.

I love my cortech tank bag but the tail bag failed catastrophically on me!! At 120+ the bungee came undone and lodged between my rear tire and my swing arm. By some miracle I didn't crash. But it tore off the can on one side and the bag was completely unusbale as were a good number of my clothes that were inside of it. (sorry - crappy pics on old cell phone)

The bags are empty and on my old bike, but here is what I have:

Those cortech bags and tailbag look real nice. The nelson-rigg's as well. I'll be getting one of those two setups once the season gets going.

I think I'm just gonna go with these... and get some of the gortex spray shit that dad uses for hunting and coat the shit out of the bag both inside and out... and then pack my shit in bags... :idk: I'd be intrested in how the bags go on though... seems to me that they'd be open to spray from the tire... :idk: |

the bottom of the bags are some sort of heat sheild that look like they are completly water proof, the bags have two straps that go across the top of them, so it looks like they have alot of adjustablity
i have the magnetic tank and even without the safety clip on the front it withstood several 100+ bursts and one 127+ run so they stay on, i have a smaller one that was on the kawi when i punted it at deals gap, was still in place after the wreck |

do you need a measurement for the tank bag or the tail bag?
the tail bag is 18 inches across the middle fyi why is there a bunny pancake in my first post? |
Quote:
how big is the opening front to back... I may just have to have a ziper installed on the side somehow... :idk: and yeah... I wasn't sure about the bunny either  |

fuckwad. but thanks. |
I have high mount exhaust; the problem with most soft luggage is that it fouls high-mounts, and heat shield or no, you will have a failure if the luggage contacts the pipe for a prolonged period.
I found these: http://www.revpack.com/motorcycle/pr.../TourPack.html a couple of years ago: they are built great, they won't foul your pipe, they stay on without shifting, and they don't leak in anything but the worst extended downpours (for which I have the waterproof covers. Highly Recommend. |

Ok with going on the indy trip this fall, I am going to need some sort of luggage, and I figure I may as well get quite a bit of storage, instead of just what I will need for the 3 day trip. I would really like to do a fair bit of touring within the next couple of years. I am looking at the Nelson Rigg CL-800 rear tote tail bag and CL-1000 saddle bags. (Linked at bottom of post) Has anybody else tried out the nelson rigg and what do you think of it? Also, what do you guys think for a tank bag? Should I go with a bigger one or a smaller one? Bigger would be able to hold more, but I don't know if it will feel like too much in front of me while I am trying to go down the highway.
Tail bag: http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/t..._tail_bag.html Saddle bags:http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/s...addlebags.html |
Cortech.
http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/s...addlebags.html http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/t..._tail_bag.html Slightly more expensive than the Nelson stuff, but cross country proven and idiot proof. I think they are cheaper at Iron Pony too. |
question on this, I have been looking over all these as well, but found another set, by Dowco...
http://www.cbxmanmotorcycles.com/pro...5-0059&affid=4 I found a few decent reviews, 1 unhappy dude...but cant find much else on them, and the price is better than on the others...which if your strapped for cash (like me right now) the price looks way better than nelson rigg or cortech...what ya'll think? oh yeah, if you strap it right, a poncho over a back pack or tail bag works just fine in pouring rain for several hours...strapped on with cargo nets, but getting in and out is a pain... |

I have this setup. I find the tail bag to be too small for clothes packing. Two pairs of folded jeans and its almost full. I the cram my socks to the side of the jeans, then undies on top of jeans. I put my shirts and what ever else stuff in the saddle bags. I turn the saddle bags around. Seem to get less drag and winding fight with them that way. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...0463Medium.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...0466Medium.jpg |
Quote:
the tail bag is small by itself to pack clothes in... but the tri-bag system is big enough for just about any trip you'd wanna take on a sport bike. the only thing I dislike about them was the rain fly isn't permanently attached... and trying to secure it isn't confidence inspiring |

sometimes it just happens. ;) I have an older Joe Rocket tailbag with a rain cover that has elastic on the bottom which keeps it from flying off. I've used it in all manner of weather (rain, sleet, snow) and it has yet to get water in it. I have a Nelson Rigg tank bag that I just put on last year but haven't taken any large trips with. Also comes with a rain cover which has survived commuting to work in the rain with no issues. I've discovered that on long rides, backpacks tend to tire me out because of extra drag and because it traps heat |
looks good fred. I will attatch my tailbag for a maiden voyage to work on wednesday, only 40 miles but I need to carry some supplies to the site and the tank bag wont be enough.
Tom |
I got that bag, and a huge ass tankbag that I can lay down on, between the two I have plenty of room for stuff/ Plus the tail bag has 2 straps on top that I can put a bedroll or tents or stuff of that nature on.

the tank bag is good to lean forward on to get a little rest when riding, I always make sure to pack softer stuf fin there. Tom |
undies socks and t-shirts...
