IMO, most places use 250s cuz they're cheap to maintain and crash well. most are donated by dealers so schools take what they can get.
in TX, you can ride your own bike in the basic class. as long as it passes a safety inspection and you have ins. on it. and you sign a waiver.
do i recommend it, NO.
